Sweeps is the time of the year when ad rates for local stations are set based on viewership ratings. So the local broadcast station affiliate productions (like the local news), as well as the national broadcast stuff (network TV shows) pull out all the stops with dramatic storylines or crazy stunts to increase viewership ratings during this time period, to make the broadcast affiliates happy by boosting their ad rates.
@charlieeckert4321

Sweeps determine ratings, ratings determine how much a media company charges for ads, and that determines whether the company stays in business.

If I recall correctly, in the Post-it note scene. The crew filled out many of the Post-it's with their thoughts about 9/11, to bulk out the number of notes. Edit: I paused it and caught the "Lord don't let this movie suck" post-it 😅

@@nsasupporter7557 i agree that underrated is often misused, but in this case i agree with the op. when people think of great acting they typically think of dramas or oscar bait type of movies and actors, very few think of comedies and comedic actors because they see comedies as something goofy or not serious and thus easier
@nsasupporter7557
@nsasupporter7557 Жыл бұрын
@@666FallenShadow yes and I agree with them because most comedians really aren’t talented actors, in fact… most actors are actually more funny then actual comedians themselves to me. Whenever an actor who you don’t think of as a comedian actually does a comedy movie, they blow comedians outta the water. Jim Carrey and Robin Williams are the ONLY comedians who are actually talented actors, not only that they are really the only funny comedians in general anyway. They overshadow all other comedians with their talented comedy, they’re versatile with their comedy. Both Carrey and Williams play different characters in every movie they’re in whether it’s comedy or drama

At the end when Simone is talking about how emotional and funny this movie is was awesome. I think a lot of movies took a cue from this movie when looking at how to blend the two. The follow-up to this one Evan Almighty is a great example of this, as is, Click w/ Adam Sandler and Kate Beckinsale.

Women in the audience began to get emotional and Men start telling my date, “Are you ok? / Does he hurt you? / You should leave him?” My date and i left the movie and I drove her home while she told me about her ex boyfriend. But when you see her in this movie or an office space or in The Break-Up or in Horrible Bosses you can see why she's so amazing and I can tell you right now I had her Rolling Stones issue where she was naked laying down and I had a huge crush on her during the 90s when I was a teenager LOL.

0:48 It's a yo-yo, George. 4:55 Sweeps refers to the four most important months of the year in television. Networks track ratings, household shares, audience demographics (18-49 being the most valuable), and impressions. Based the Nielsen data collected, networks are able to set local and national ad rates for the year. Higher ratings means commanding higher ad revenue for a program and network overall. This led shows to drum up the juiciest stories to garner the most viewers possible. This is why season premieres in the fall and season finales in the spring often feature high profile guest stars, two-parter cliffhanger episodes, and hilarious or shocking storylines. It's why the Super Bowl commands such high ad rates. It's why Oprah was able to remain number one in the ratings during her show's entire 25 year run and became a multi-billionaire from syndication. It's why Grey's Anatomy and Desperate Housewives became famous for their disaster episodes. It's the will they / won't they of Ross and Rachel on Friends. It's Community's iconic Modern Warfare episode from S1. It's "Who shot JR?" on the show Dallas.

Sweeps week comes from Nielson ratings and started in the 1950s. That's the week they would start on the east coast and "sweep" west, collecting tv viewing information from chosen viewing households who had opted to participate. This tended to be a week where shows would have big events or cliffhangers to draw numbers and boost their ratings. News programs would also tend to get a little more sensationalistic around that time.

I'm pretty sure I know the reason for the laugh track during bloopers: director Tom Shadyac once said that he does not allow the crew to laugh on set (or at Jim Carrey). My guess is that he's trying to prevent people from getting the giggles and making it difficult to get through takes. You can find a blooper reel of this movie on KZbin in which you'll see Morgan Freeman say "no laughing on the set," per the instructions of Shadyac.

Also, Carrey’s impression at 3:33, when he holds the brush like a mustache and says, “And that’s the way it was…”, for some reason George thought it was Will Ferrell?? He was actually doing Walter Cronkite, the great news anchor who said that when signing off.

God (no pun intended) this movie was fucking hilarious and I haven’t watched it in years so thank you for this. I honestly was crying laughing at the Steve Carell gibberish part, and this is why I love reaction videos. And every time George made an, “omg but what about the consequences,” comment I was SO excited to see him be validated. So cathartic.

I definitely get a kick outta this movie for the fun comedy that is; but, it's definitely a movie that runs into major ethical issues if you change the scenario only slightly. The premise only works with a character like Bruce. A guy who's already got a great life, but isn't appreciative of it. He takes his problems which are fairly minor in the grand scheme of things, and blows them out of proportion due to his selfishness. Take this same scenario and replace Bruce with a 5 year old leukemia patient. Somehow I doubt Morgan Freeman is gonna show up with some snarky wisdom to throw in their face. Because of course Bruce works perfectly to be shown a lesson; it's not a very funny situation when you're dealing with countless people who were just dealt a horrible hand in life, regardless of anything they could've done. Moreover, it really showcases God's ego more than anything. He let countless tragedies occur by letting Bruce take the reigns from him as God...all to show up one pissed off news anchor who was genuinely having a bad run of things... That's pettiness on a... godlike level. The movie also glosses over the good things that would've come from Bruce's actions. They joke about people winning the lottery and losing weight; but don't remark about cancer being cured, the end of starvation, friends and family making it through the night in the hospital. Because you know those things were being prayed for. The movie sets God up as well, God... And tends to paint us humans as almost entirely self-absorbed, except for Jenifer Aniston, who of course prays and believes. As a comedy it's fun and should only be taken as such; it's just an interesting movie to look back on and play with the context.

Wrong song, Simone. "I got the world on a string, Sittin' on a rainbow, Got the string around my Finger..." 'Sweeps Week' is a period where TV networks broadcast their best content, hoping to get top ratings. They want to 'sweep' the ratings. So many puns... Bruce was saved by Grace. By God's Grace. There but for the Grace of God go I. Amazing Grace. Amazing Grace! how sweet the sound, That saved a wretch; like me! ’Twas Grace that taught my heart to fear, And Grace my fears relieved; How precious did that Grace appear The hour I first believed!

The moral of the story is that God *could* solve all the ills of the world, but chooses not to. And Bruce could've kept all that power without any side effects if he'd remembered to change the admin password as soon as he was given elevated permissions, then set all the prayers to auto-ignore, just like Yahweh.

There's a line from the movie Oh God! (a clear influence for this movie) where a man asks God why he permits all the suffering in the world and God replies, "I don't permit the suffering. You do. Free will, all the choices are yours." In other words, God doesn't want to be a puppet-master. Yeah, He could fix all our problems, but that would turn us into puppets.

You could set most to ignore but some should clearly be let through from time to time. Anything with lottery ticket winner could ignored and please kill my boss or other revenge. Most of Jim's problems were caused by him not slowing down and paying attention. Some clearly weren't his fault but most of it was. Never trust colleagues when especially when the next several years of their lives are on the line because they can and probably should screw you over, not morally but for the good of their entire lives.

@@jculver1674 Neato bandito...so people born with crippling conditions chose to be that way? Or maybe starving children chose to have flies lay eggs in their eyes? Or maybe every person who ever died of a disease chose for that to happen? That whole "free will" excuse only really pertains to things people have a chance to choose. It kinda falls apart when you remember that everything that isn't a human also exists.

@@Liesmith424 You could take that a step farther by making a thousand angels to help out but then you have to worry if one will eventually turn into a Lucifer even if they are originally perfect copies. 9:01: in the original theatrical release, this was a 777 number (get it?), but it turned out to be a real phone number for a famous radio station and a bunch of other people, who kept getting called by other people looking to speak to God, so it was later edited into the industry-standard, nonexistent-in-real-life 555.
