I can remember that I had already purchased tickets to see Maiden when I found out that they had fired their singer and got a new one. (Remember this was WAY before the Internet). I was PISSED!! I wanted my money back. So long story short ... the first time I heard Bruce ... the first time I heard anything from NOTB was live at that show. I was blown away. Fan Club member to this day.

Your initial response was understandable. Paul Di'anno had a great stage presence, a great punky attitude and had his own fans. But yeah, Bruce was a really good fit. I think he sounded his best on "Piece of Mind".

Quite simply, for those of us who were there at the time, at the right impressionable age (for me age 13 in 1982) it was a quasi religious experience. Its still the greatest metal album of all time. Ferocious yet melodic they somehow could write hit singles without compromising on anything. Its just a shame that the first L.P. I bought, was the best the genre ever produced. Not a duff track on it, no reliance upon chorus, so much fun and everyone top notch. Clive Burr from that album changed my life as I then spent the next 15 years as a drummer because of that album. A life changing event. When I listen to it now, I have to close my eyes and try to remember how I felt in 1982, and sometimes I'm back there. You cannot listen to it now as a new fan and expect the same, anymore than I can listen to the Beatles and understand what that meant at the time to youngsters then. It was before my time and I can only access it retrospectively, dogeared, tattered, the glitter rubbed off and without the jolt of electricity surging through you that was there at that moment in time.

@ You guys are clearly not drummers and have no idea about drumming what so ever. Mcbrain is a world class known drummer recognized by drummers from all kinds of different backgrounds. Burr was a great drummer for a heavy metal band like that but no where near Mcbrain. Why do you think the band themselves went with Mcbrain with the first oportunity they got? Same thing happened with Dickinson over Di Anno...
@m42037
@m42037 6 жыл бұрын
Chris Williams Read the interviews by Dickinson, he also said "i didn't like the way the Clive thing went down!" And again said "Not to take anything away from Nicko he's great but Clive Burr was the best drummer this band ever had" and yes i played drums for 30 years bud I know drumming, my last kit, USA Ludwig custom maple, Emerald green 6 pc kit, 10, 12, 14,16, 26, 6.5/14 Supraphonic snare, all Paiste 2002s. Nicko he was a blues drummer then, not as technical at the time as Clive not even close. Killers is the hardest record to play "note for note" out of all their records. Nicko can NOT and still can't play killer 16ths on the HH (Wrathchild etc) like Clive did during the old stuff and NOT his Buddy Rich type rolls! He did easy buzz rolls instead because he's not as gifted as Clive was. Clive was depressed after going to his dad's funeral, you need to read and i think Bruce Dickinson knows more about what went down than you smh. Allegedly Clive was asked to get it together becuse of drinking, Clive said in a interview that their was no "indulgence's" why he was asked to leave contrary to what rumors were. But even Bruce he left the band because of Steve Harris, it was his band and Steve was a real dickhead back then.

Damian Grimm A crazy acting "Blues drummer" right. Who said he was a roadie? And Bruce also said "i didn't like the way the Clive thing went down" he was pissed Clive was asked to leave. He wasn't "fired" Paul was fired because of extreme partying. Ozzy is a example. Sabbath wanted him out because of extreme drinking. Clive wanted time out, a break if you will and Steve the asshole he was 30 years ago (even Bruce and Adrian left the band back many years ago hmm) didn't have no patients, Clive's dad died for criss sakes!! Steve wanted to go go go!!! Then later he felt guilty and started a benefit for Clive when he exhausted all his money in medical bills when he got sick with MS and had the band do gig benefit's for him. Clive shouldn't have been asked to leave. The humble man he was he just said "ok" and left. Again Bruce thought it was cold, but if he bitched at the King Steve, maybe he would fire Bruce so he stayed out of it, neutral if you will till years later when he spoke the truth about why Clive left. That interview in 1983 was so breef, you can tell he didn't want to tell the the truth, years later he did..

@@m42037 Clive was best for that early period of Maiden just as Paul was. Enough said. I loved his playing but could you imagine an album like Powerslave being as good with his playing? Ok, it would be different but then the whole band would have evolved differently. As far as I know, Nicko stepped in for some shows while Clive buried his Dad. Sure, he was drinking but that could be put down to a phase on the road. Other bands might have shown more tolerence. Bruce was indeed miffed by the decision and rightly championed Clive for a long time but Steve had years of that 'replace and move forward' psychology built in him from all his own struggles. Rod who had already seen off Stratton for listening to George Benson wasn't going to argue! Reminds me of Peter Gabriel leaving Genesis. His first born was is an incubator following premature birth and the band were like get over to the studio to rehearse the new album. Fuck off. Family first, always. Before I get destroyed I ought to say Killers with McBrain on drums wouldn't have even been half the record it was. Burr was sensational

Well, I said "older AND younger" at the same time. If you take a picture, yeah, he can look older (like on the thumbnail of the video... my god one of the worst picture of him ever!) but during the interview he looks very lively, happy and physicaly fit. There's something juvenil about him here to me. A bit thin too (but always better to be thin when you're aging, IMO). I do agree that when he talks you can hear "something" is not exactly as before (but removing a throat tumor of the size of a golf ball is not without any problem I guess!). But really to me he sounds 95% as before and when he sings I didn't feel anything wrong yet. I mean, if you compare it to the 80s of course he does not have the same range, but from three or four years ago I don't hear a difference. EDIT: I must even say that in some mai 2018 footages of their shows he sounds phenomenal and pushing his voice higher than before his problem. I like their last album but he sang without must variation in it, but live in 2018 it's... well, better.

Well, there is nothing evil in Iron Maiden. The Number Of The Beast song is a story about Steve Harris' terrible nightmare. And I wonder why people forget about songs like Hallowed Be Thy Name, Sign Of The Cross, Blood Brothers, For The Greater Good Of God.... what's more- Nicko has become a Christian. As a Christian too, I'm always against this false propaganda connected with Maiden and being anti-Church. And those who think this way are simply stupid.

The thing he said at the end there; It's because they're British. - I find that sort of "Don't you bloody mess with me!" attitude kind of remains or retains throughout a Brit's life. But let's say certain American artists (for example) seem to get more lame and tame after their fourties or so... Take a look at older British comedians as well, they still have an edge to them despite being from a way different generation. - I don't know, there's just something to that with British people.
