"unconscious despair looks and feels like depression" - very interesting, thank you.

This is very close to the metamodel in NLP. Activate the problem state and find the implicit learning then stimulate a resource state. Also very similar to parts therapy in Advanced conversational hypnosis.

How does a person find a therapist with this level of knowledge and ability? It's impossible to find one, in my experience. I did EMDR over years and it was interesting and even wild at times but nothing changed at all. I'm certain it's because it's my stuff but i didn't have a therapist who could see that and work on it in the ways described in this interview. I just ordered Mr Ecker's book to study.

Very interesting, but conceptually this seems to be isomorphic to CBT. What differs is the experiential method in changing the schemata (in comparison to the cognitive/intellectual of CBT), it also brings to mind the Gestalt-type and imagery-rescripting work in Schema Therapy. The part of not changing symptoms also brings to mind 3rd wave behavioural therapies like ACT. Seems to me that many psychotherapeutic brands talk about the same thing in different words. Having said that, i think he is absolutely right that hot-experiential methods are probably much stronger in comparison to cold-cognitive ones. In a matter of fact, i think that many behavioural experiments done in the context of CBT are effective because they induce hot-experiential change (and this is why the evidence seems to strongly support them).

I think the quote about emotional memory converts the past into an expectation of the future without our conscious awareness could be better captured by changing the word converts to constructs. Convert means change but it is not changing it, it is constructing a narrative that makes sense to use as a rule or theory for what to expect in the future(in an unconscious way).

Thank you .... Ecker's mentor was Dr. Robert Shaw, MD, who was very influenced by Werner Erhard. I consider this work ontological fundamentally. Blessings ... Dr. David Kamnitzer, DC

... the client goes into destabilization. However, it is not a question that past schema is true while believing the new present schema. Both can be true. The past was true for the past. While the present for the now. The realization lies in that thou both true, yet cannot exist together.

big problem i have with coherence therapy is the model, although decades old (with former depth oriented brief therapy) has only brought up 1 study yet that concerns some procrastination crap and it is not even properly translated into effect sizes. apart from that, the approach appears genius
