One thing Pete Carroll did at USC was he played True Freshmen right off the bat. E.g. Sean Cody, Hershel Dennis, Reggie Bush, Lendale White, Darnell Bing, Matt Barkley, Taylor Mays, Steve Smith, Dwayne Jarrett, Eric Wright, etc. By the end of their Freshman year they had experience and were veterans. In their Sophomore year they would just ball out. That USC team that smacked Oklahoma was littered with Sophomores and Freshmen.

It wont happen ... ND played only 1 team that was ranked in the top 10 in the preseason poll who was ranked #9 now ranked #3 and they lost to them. At the end of the season polling positing is determined by strength of schedule just encase the records a tie. Even in #3 Cinncy loose to #16 Houston ND will not move up because they had a softer schedule and Cinncy wins the tie breaker. Kelly saw this and in reality and if I use 2021 preseason raking for 2022 there might be 8 SEC teams in the top 25 especially since OU and Texas joining the SEC..

I can't wait until the playoff is expanded. There's been so many years when the non-playoff bowls were such better games than playoff bowls. The BCS system sucked, but I don't think it was all that worse than the current committee. Back in the summer, OU bailed on the Big 12 without any prior communications. More potential money and opportunities. Lincoln Riley does the same thing to OU. Transfer portal, coach carousel, NIL, it's becoming a free-for-all in college football. No doubt it's about the pursuit of money. So my granddaughter who's entering college asked me does a school who pays a new coach millions of dollar affect my tuition. I told her tongue in cheek, it depends if they win or lose.

Naw ... in 2016, Ohio St went to the playoff when they did not go to the Big 10 Championship. Alabama went in 2018, even though the SEC title game was Georgia vs Auburn. So, if both OSU & Bama can go to the playoff with an 11-1 record, and no conference title appearance then the Irish shouldn't need a Conference Title Game to prove themselves. Besides; if ND were to decide they are going to join a conference, the ACC holds a preferential contract clause, saying they have first option of taking Notre Dame. It's in their annual game play agreement. That, and Notre Dame is officially a member of the ACC in all other sports.

Good to see Michigan going back to their big ten roots, a physical run-oriented smash-mouth football complemented with great defense. Michigan was swayed away from what they do best due to the success of spread offenses by OSU, and other major powerhouses during the late 2000s and 2010s, and put them in an identity crisis for a long time. I hope they can continue this back to the drawing board trend and recement their spot as one of the top 5 programs that young players want to be a part of.

The only problem I have with what Bruce said at first about Brian Kelly being hypocritical about leaving is that... With the schedule of modern college football recruiting, you literally have to leave when he left otherwise he either wouldn't have gotten the job or he would've gotten probably the 50th best recruiting class. If he was going to leave, he had to leave when he did. Yes, there's an outside shot ND makes the playoff, but it's not likely, and even if they do, they get destroyed. And Brian Kelly knew that.
@uvjones9616
@uvjones9616 2 жыл бұрын
I think what people didn’t like most about it (myself included) is that he didn’t come to the ND players and assistant coaches as a man and tell them in person. He ghosted them. And if the articles I’ve read are accurate a lot of his former staff and players only found out when everyone else did through outside sources and media outlets. That doesn’t sit right with a lot of people.

Why are people so astounded by the Kelly decision? He did the same thing (only worse) to Cincinnati when they were ranked 3 in the BCS en route to a game with Florida and Tebow at the time. We're talking about Bill being one of the best O-line coaches in the country in the same year that Klatt demolished OU's offensive line for giving up too much pressure? We saw the same problems in the game against OSU. Stop pretending that the Big 12 has any defenses you can say offer a challenge prior to this year... even then OU didn't see it until the last game of the season, and they were not prepared. Neither Riley nor any of the staff he is taking are as good as people keep claiming they are. As a sooner fan, I am happy they are gone. The ceiling for Riley was much too low for anything the SEC is going to bring when we move. At least now we can try to make a more relevant coaching structure that actually game plans and adjusts instead of trying to rely on big plays from a freshman quarterback.

I'd michigan can just get a 5star WR like any one if the 3 WR Ohio state has then you completely change the big ten! Because our o line is great. And we always have great backs!! But have a just 1 WR makes every team nervous! Because you have to pay attention to both the run and pass game!

The "pressure" at LSU is being blown out of proportion. Coach O had 2 back 2 back terrible seasons with multiple off the field issues and the program was heading downward fast. Les Miles was here for over a decade and would still be the coach if he could have just let the OC have complete control of the offense. Realistic fans don't think we should win every single year. LSU should be in the hunt every year and at least play in a new years six bowl. High but realistic expectations.

That’s BS. We should be COMPETING for titles every year. Four and five loss seasons are unacceptable here. You’re not going to be fired for the occasional down year but fighting to be bowl eligible on the last game of the season isn’t going to cut it especially with the off field antics Orgeron had.

I mean ... if he really wants to make us all laugh, then Cincy beating Michigan while ND beats Georgia in Round 1, then the Irish beat the Bearcats for the title. And in triple overtime with someone fumbling the 2 point conversion snap. That way we could hear the UC folks whine about how they already beat ND. And how if the snap hadn't been fumbled, they'd have won.

Michigan is a lot like Notre Dame in terms of the culture, academics, admissions, etc. Harbaugh makes guys live on campus for their first year. He's strict on study hall time and doesn't let them load up on online classes. So they have to be interacting in the student body in a classroom. He doesn't push soft majors on them they don't want. So there is a ceiling on the level of talent they'll accumulate. But Michigan now has a definite identity like Cowherd said. And it's one that is authored by the head coach with a nod to the modern game. Michigan fans were crying out for that in Jim's first 6 years. He's far from a perfect coach, but the unique things he brings, few other coaches can bring. And finally that element is present in how the team prepares and plays. Most Michigan fans will take that and whatever that brings in wins going forward. And he's very engaged again. It got corporate and he was chasing a myth reputation for a few years I think. The NFL stuff is probably done and it's him and his alma mater. It's now going to be very clear to everyone what Michigan is. Like Wisconsin. Like Iowa. Like Notre Dame. As examples. They aren't going to be OSU in the way OSU now does things. Or Alabama. Or LSU. Some years it will be better than others.

What kind of child compares a common football coaching term like "finish", which is used to teach players to wrap up and gang tackle, with 100 million business deal? American men, and I use that term loosely when describing males that are in the media, have gotten to be such pansies. Many of these football players are going to be making financial decisions and business decisions for themselves when they get into the league in a few years. Are we to believe that they didn't "finish" just because they might leave one team for a better contract with another? It's big business. I'm sure many of these guys who end up signing contracts with new teams, didn't necessarily want to leave the team they were with or their teammates.

i love the narrative that "CINcinnati soundly beat notre dame", that is a perspective without even looking at the box score...the yardage difference in that game was plus 45 for cincy, nd had 19 first downs to cincy's 13, cincy was 2 for 11 on 3rd downs and nd was 6/17 and nd ran 12 more plays than cincy......kelly did not have a team that he admitted wasn't good enough in his opinion to even be considered for the cfplayoff this year and didn't prepare his team welll for that game, much like their game against toledo(who is going to a bowl by the way).....nd had 1 terrible quarter in that game and got beat, but if the 2 were to play 2moro, cincy would find a completely different defense at this point and hopefully the next nd head coach in freeman would have them ready to play and pounce on his former team

That Mel Tucker contract is ridiculous and they'll find a buy-out over the next 3-4 years. Harbaugh appears to finally field HIS team and their trajectory is hot. Not good timing for a rival that historically struggles to compete for elite, in-state recruits. Then there is some very real concerns they should have about his coaching abilities. Yes, Mel has done a stellar job with the program the last two seasons but he has a checkered coaching history not befitting of a coach that is now being paid elite money. For instance, Mel's team was down just two scores against Ohio State and he pulled the plug on the one player that made his season a success. His running back. Why so soon? He effectively put the fate of the game in the hands of his qb who was not on the same-level as the Buckeyes. Then it snowballed and became an embarrassment. Again, he's a good coach but to be one of the highest paid coaches comes high expectations. Just ask Harbaugh who could not meet what everyone wanted and the school found a way to structure a contract at half pay. Good luck Sparty. I am not saying you have the wrong coach but there was no good reason to give him a 10 year contract like that.

I'm so tired of the narrative that LSU dumps coaches too soon. Les Miles refused to modernize his offense and I honestly think 2011 NC game broke him. Coach O was just not a good coach. His hires were horrible, he has zero identity on what he wants his football team to look like and he was there as a glorified cheer leader. Forever grateful for 2019 but you can't turn around after that and give us the WORST defensive production in school history. We had teams like MSU breaking school records on us. You can't turn around after that and hire a DC without ever even interviewing him. You can't turn around after 2020 and then hire an OC who has never called plays before in his professional life. Catching lightning in a bottle and winning a NC on the backs of Burrow, Chase, CEE and Jefferson (while also having the best DC and actual glue that held that team together in Aranda) doesn't grant you a lifetime coaching contract.

I know they don’t know but we are financially tied to Kelly for 10 years. His buyout is 90% of his remaining contract. We won’t be able to put him on the hot seat until year 6 or 7 and that is if things go horribly wrong. He doesn’t have to win a natty every 2 years. Just compete on some years, and when you dip, dip to 9-3 not 6-6 like coach O. Coach O got fired because he went .500 in 2 straight seasons with all the off-field stuff. I’m a die hard LSU fan and I am skeptical but the last 3 coach’s have won a natty so if Kelly can’t it was a horrible hire.

There's no question that Fickell is a better coach than Kelly, who refuses to go to a ball-control offense. Kelly has experience but is stubborn in his ways. Nearing the half of the Toldeo game., his man Coan threw a pick-6 that could have cost ND the game. Grind it out with your size & depth! 12th year at ND yet struggles to put away Toledo??? Not a great coach by any means.
