According to an article called The Challengers of Bruce Lee: "Another time, Bruce was having dinner with John Tunney, the son of former boxing champion Gene Tunney. ‘Do you think you would have beaten my father?’ asked John. Bruce smiled, ‘To tell you the truth I could beat anyone in the world. Of course, if I sat still and your father hit me, forget it. The question is, could he ever get close to me?’" Not saying that this actually happened, but this story might be where that quote came from.

Bruce Lee learned from a lot of people, including Gene LeBell. I don't understand why some people seem to think that's a bad thing. Bruce Lee wasn't born with superpowers. He was talented but had to be taught styles and techniques, just like everyone else. Gene LaBell was one of many people who contributed to Lee's legendary abilities.

Lee never ever said the quote in this ridiculous video. “I would never boast about being number one, but would never admit to be number two”. That is what Lee said. And any professional fighter or martial artist would (and should) say the same thing today. It’s called humility....

This is like ranking Bruce Wayne and comparing him with actual fighters lol. One of his hustles was selling MA classes. How many UFC fighters actually use Gungfu? How many actually use Jeet Kun Do? Dude was selling the kung fu/wing chung equivalent of Aerobic kickboxing and that whole hustle depended on people really believing that he could fight. Jet Li was the Wushu champion and one of the goats of MA and he doesn't try to scam impressionable weeaboos so nobody needs to think he can actually fight.

Bruce had many "teachers" over the years. The person who made this video is obviously not a Martial Artist yet. To understand Martial Arts from Bruce's perspective and from any true Martial Artist's perspective, is to understand that you are always, and will always be, the teacher, and the student. You never stop learning, and you never stop sharing your knowledge with others.

Contrary to popular belief, Bruce Lee weighs 140-145 lbs most of his life and the guy was walking around with less than 10% bodyfat. That's 140-145lbs of almost pure muscle. I don't know who will win between the two. But to say that Gene Lebell would absolute crush Bruce Lee was too much of an exaggeration. The story about Bruce getting picked up by Gene Lebell was from Lebell's own autobiography a few decades after Bruce Lee's death when nobody can corroborate the truth of the story, so take that with a grain of salt lol....

Bruce Lee first Student Glover taught him Judo. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bruce_Lee "Lee began teaching martial arts in the United States in 1959. He called what he taught Jun Fan Gung Fu (literally Bruce Lee's Kung Fu). It was basically his approach to Wing Chun.[52] Lee taught friends he met in Seattle, starting with Judo practitioner Jesse Glover, who continued to teach some of Lee's early techniques. Taky Kimura became Lee's first Assistant Instructor and continued to teach his art and philosophy after Lee's death.[53] Lee opened his first martial arts school, named the Lee Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute, in Seattle."

It's semantics really. What do you mean by defeated? understand that a submission is a submission and if you apply it to anyone it will work. It's not hocus pocus esoteric magic. It is body mechanics. Your joints are only meant to rotate in certain directions and not in others. I doubt that Bruce fought Lebell in any kind of head to head battle. Why? because, generally speaking, judo has no striking. And bruce lee is a striker. They probably engaged in a grappling match with Bruce Lee refraining from throwing strikes. I'm sure Bruce thought his speed would be enough, and then i'm sure Lebell tripped him a few times and got him in a hold. It's not exactly "defeated."

Gene LeBell keeps telling people his relationship with Bruce Lee is soley on the purpose to attract students to his Judo school and as a way to make profits from people buying the products he put on his website.

I'm not saying either that Bruce Lee is not a martial artist, nor am I saying that about Gene, they are both incredibly talented fighters AND actors but that's the thing, they never actually fought for real. At the King George V School of England, Robert Randall was known as a leading athlete, and above all a boxing champion. There was bad blood between them. Haven't you read? They lined up solo in front of a large audience at the Mirandor Mansion, which was then a basketball court over the 12th floor. So many people wanted to see a duel between the best Chinese and the best Englishman that if someone thought about selling tickets that day, he would undoubtedly take a heavy load. in the previous doctor's decision, which was presented to him a few days later at the police station, Lee read that the spleen is by nature a very fragile organ, so it breaks relatively easily. the trauma Robert Randall suffered was the so-called immediate rupture because the rupture of the parenchyma and the spleen capsule occurred simultaneously. Immediate excision of the spleen saved Robert's life, but he had to spend in the hospital for the next few weeks and every day he asked about his health, he even tried to visit an Englishman several times, but he did not agree. Due to his young age and the testimony of a number of witnesses, Bruce Lee avoided criminal liability, but the consequence of the proceedings against him was expulsion from La Salle Collage. And in triads like Wo Shing Wo, Yee On and 14K (the most influential and brutal Gang whose extortion methods shocked even old stagers who remembered the Shanghai times), haven't you read Amy Chan's account? Do you know who she was? Didn't you watch the interviews? It was after beating the son of one of the 14K leaders at the "Bay Side Night Club" on Tsimshatsui in October that Lee had to flee to America. Didn't you watch the interviews with John Sakson as he described the fight on Enter the Dragon? You haven't watched the interviews with witnesses of the fight in the gym with a Japanese whose head was kicked like a ball, the frightened thought that he had killed him, and he passed out. I don't want to write to me anymore. I wish you more faith and fruitful searches.

It's not a suitable analogy to compare one's fighting ability with how good he's at playing tennis. Fighting competition in Bruce Lee's time is totally different from today's competitions like American UFC, China's SanShou or Japan's K1. And after all, how do you know Bruce Lee never tested himself in real fighting? I can easily name a few who claimed to have sparred with him, Bob Wall, Jim Kelly, Bolo Yeung etc.

@IpMan19 Martial Artists don't have an issue being called a student, or calling someone a teacher. The idea is they are humble enough to admit when they have learned something of value from another. Not really sure, other than your lack of understanding regarding Martial Arts Philosophy, why you seem to be stuck on this concept. Perhaps you might want to research Bruce's own words, he talks quite a bit about teachers and students.

So? ---And I'm asking for this evidence. Bruce said he could beat anyone in the world and was afraid of no opponent. That claim is taken out of context. Bruce can be cocky but not that cocky. He like to tease people and have fun, but he actually had a strong humble side (which you had to have to break Chinese cultural tradition and conjure up an idea like mixed martial arts). For the most part, the Chuck story is true. Bruce didn't put much emphasis on the quick high kick until he met Chuck. Bruce was still in the midst of deconstructing his whole Gung Fu Wing Chun world and learning new power techniques from boxing, Judo and even fencing for stance, balance and posture. It was Gene Labell who helped Bruce learn a lot about grappling. Bruce may have been a master, but he really was the eternal student.

***** I don't take shits from those cowards who big talk themselves after Lee's dead. I take what was spoken public when Lee was around. Bruce said in an interview for a martial art post that he trained Chuck Norris, Joe Lewis and Mike Stones, all the champions like a mother would her child. And that's publicly recorded and circulated when Bruce and them were all around. None of those champs countered that back then.

bulldogzkmf2007 Bruce getting choked out in training isn't the same as a real fight. Fighters usually go easy/tap out early in training to avoid injuries. They exchanged techniques for sure, but I wont believe for one second that Gene could beat Bruce in a real streetfight. So unless you have proof, you should shut up.

bruce knew alot from books and he learned some Judo at highschool plus Jessie Glover showed him some takedowns but lateron as bruce anderstood the mechanics he would just use simple techniques followed by an ending choke or a strike to vital points like groin , eyes or throat. Therefore the idea was almost allways to survive a real fight without wheightclasses and rulesets.

@SteveSbc406 The two sentences that appear at the "0:30" NEVER need to oppose each other. Again, it only means even Gene LeBell cross trained with Bruce that still doesn't lead to a teacher/student relationship. Just as two scientists working out together on a scientific project, they may exchange their ideas, but neither of them should call each other teacher/student.

Lol....look how weirdly invested you are in all this? If you teach something to someone, you are "the teacher" of that thing to the individual you taught it to. Bruce Lee doesn't need to recognize him in that for it to be so. A man has a thousand teachers in his life but for some bizarre reason you want to cling to Ip Man. Bruce Lee learned the forms from Ip Man to cast aside form. Bruce, in the end was his own teacher. His own creation.

No dumbass. How pathetic can you possibly be? Are you 10 years old? How would someone be scared of their own judo student who they could choke to death at any second they felt like? He picked Bruce up over his head like he was nothing because Bruce Lee was a small asian man and he could do absolutely nothing about it. He was embarrassed in front of hundreds of witnesses and he knew it, thats why he started learning judo from gene. You're one of these losers who can't seperate real life from from hollywood. Stop disrespecting Bruce Lee and his philosophy on martial arts with you're stupidity. He doesn't need you're pathetic childs fantasy version of reality to help him, he's already the most influential martial artist of all time bcause he learned from things like this. No professional fight doesn't mean he couldn't fight. In fact, many good fighters don't necessary bother to enter the ring. 'Professional' is a word for the people who rely on making money out of the subject. So, Gene Lebell is not a professional fighter either. Gene is an actor and a JOKE.

I personally dont care if he lost fights it doesnt make him any less human in fact its what motivates people to get better. Towards the end of his life he was unatoppable. I wish you more faith and fruitful searches.

pretty obvious you're very miss informed about Gene, Gene was known for his mixing of styles and was one of the orig. Cage fighters introduce a mix of styles Judo and Grappling was his mix. now Bruce studied under Gene at his gym for over a year. Gene spent maybe a months worth of time at Bruce's anyone wanna bet Bruce couldn't defend Gene's attack and once on the ground Bruce's style is void and he knew it, which is why he spent so much time with Gene.

No one could ever tell if any boxer was able to beat him. Are you saying if he couldn't one in a 'sport' then he'll surely lose any fight?? You still can't separate the difference. Furthermore, good at boxing doesn't not mean good at fighting and vice versa.
