In the final part of this Bruce Lee retrospective, we will study the final fight sequence of Bruce's original conception of "The Game of Death." It doesn't get the recognition it deserves and the fact that Bruce passed away before getting to complete this work of art is nothing short of a tragedy. Hopefully, this video will shed a little light on Bruce's martial and movie genius. Credit for footage remastering/mixing of "The Game of Death" (1972, unfinished) goes to YT channel OldPangYau.

Excellent analysis, man; spot on. Dan Inosanto has said that martial arts-wise people may come along who are Lee’s equal in physical attributes, but not in his totality-that ability to not just break things down and innovate, but to translate what he learned, thought, and felt into words or physical movement or, ultimately, celluloid. As you so nicely summed up, what you saw on screen wasn't just a martial artist; it was a fully realized human being expressing himself and his art. Yeah, he disguised that art as simplistic action entertainment to make it more accessible, but like a martial arts class each session, each movie, was slightly more in depth; and, yes, it’s sad to think how far he could have taken it. People sometimes wonder why another Bruce Lee hasn’t come around, what he had that made him so special, and the answer is quite simple: He had EVERYTHING. But his message was that we ALL do. You just have to express what you have honestly and completely. Unfortunately, as he often said, that ain’t easy to do.

He really put the "Art" back into Martial arts....sure maybe he wasn't a professional fighter as modern day MMA fanatics like to criticize, but it doesn't mean he wasn't a Martial Artist...the two are completely different things, for Bruce martial arts was a way of expressing himself, for a pro fighter Martial Arts is for competition, a way to push their body's limits and test themselves....I hate that people make comparisons with Bruce saying things like "Bruce Lee would lose in a real fight" when he never claimed to be the best in the world, it was more the Bruceploitation films that came after that made such claims and he was never interested in beating people up, he just wanted to express himself freely without the shackles of tradition holding him back....an that's what makes him such a legend....he was like the Jimi Hendrix of Martial Arts and Martial Arts films.

Another great video. Alot of Bruce's cinematic swagger comes from the fact that he was an actor before becoming a martial artist. He was a child actor and his father Lee Hoi Chuen was a theater actor. Aside from the martial arts Bruce understood the importance of body language in acting, he didn't just punch and kick he threw techniques with flavor.

I've seen this pagoda scene many times over and have never seem to noticed Bruce doing that "baseball punch", until you pointed it out. Wow. Also, thank you to your excellent analysis of this film.

Thoroughly enjoyed this two partner dude. I’m also a big Bruce Lee fan and I really dug how you analysed his allegorical and philosophical intentions. It’s a shame he never finished ‘Game of Death’. It was shaping up to be such a technical and artistic step up from ‘Way of The Dragon’. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

"Game Of Death"....probably the ONLY unfinished movie in film history where it's still considered a classic ANYWAY...including that amazing tracksuit that, after almost half a century, timelessly still stylistically "holds up" and doesn't look silly (and never will imo) even today!

One of the locations that Bruce intended to use in Game Of Death can be seen in The Mar's Villa (1977) - a great indie fu flick featuring John Liu, Chia Kai, Tung Wei (don't think...feeeeel boy) and Philip Ko - well worth a watch. it's the huge bronze Buddha statue John Liu's character is meditating at during the film's opening.
