Bruce Lee's Techniques In MMA - What JKD Got Right

It’s time to talk about a legend. Bruce Lee was not only a film star, but also one of the first martial artists to train in multiple styles. Bruce Lee developed his style, named Jeet Kune Do, for street fighting, but amazingly, many of the techniques have proven highly effective in MMA. So much so that they have become staples of the sport, despite being widely unknown and underutilized for decades. How is it possible a man with no professional record was so ahead of the curb?
Well, Lee actually trained with several champions, who valued him for both his practicality and his creativity. Having friends from so many different arts exposed Lee to a number of techniques that would not gain popularity for years, or ever generations. Lee carefully considered each technique, recording and testing everything by hard sparring some of the best fighters of his era. His goal was to figure out what worked best from each art. He absorbed what was useful, discarded what was useless, and added what was uniquely his own.

Here are some things we know: Multiple people have acknowledged exactly how great Bruce was, and how impressive he was. Nobody has come forth and said they beat Bruce, as opposed to the former point. We know that he popularized MMA with his Jeet Kun Do, and he had a body that had literally no fat, and he worked himself to death. Alex Amaya “he never mastered anything to the point where he could teach” did you not know that he had multiple schools open and his best students opened schools of their own? And even if Bruce isn’t the originator of these techniques and cross training, the fact that he put it on the grand stage for everyone to see is what made him the father of mma. Especially back then when the crossing of styles was still kind of frowned upon, he singlehandedly opened the world up to the same philosophies that you see 50 years later

@MasterFatness
@MasterFatness 4 жыл бұрын
The thing about trapping in boxing vs. MMA is that you can't legally grab or push your opponents arms or gloves in boxing, but there are no rules saying you can't punch your opponents arms or gloves, so from a boxing perspective it is tehnically legal to punch the hand away. Another example would be Joe Louis "hooking" Jim Braddock's left hand to make way for his knockout right hand. It's a legitimate move.

So One of Bruce Lee's first students, Jesse Glover was a close friend to my teacher. I have heard a lot about Bruce and one of Bruce's teachers from this man. A lot of Bruce's style came from this teacher in Seattle and Bruce Lee's own abstract thinking. From what I was told mixed training wasn't exceptional. A lot of Asia did it, but the one's doing it weren't parts of school. Like they were entertainers and/or sketcher people. But this man from Seattle was an old entertainer who was apparently one of Bruce's huge influences. Bruce was just the first one to openly cross train and call out purists in the Eastern arts. He was also, from what I told a very talented and hard working martial artist.

@Zeek Banistor never said he was a fighter. He's been in fights. He could fight. Also, that's such a stupid phrase. Everyone is a fighter. Everyone has the potential to be in a fight. But yeah, I'd argue you don't know anything. Because I've interacted with people who said they couldn't touch Bruce in training or light sparring and those people have thrown me around the room.
@9usuck0
@9usuck0 4 жыл бұрын
@Zeek Banistor, dude. I have first hand experience with the guy taught by Jesse. Jesse told everyone he couldn't touch Bruce, none of those students could touch Jesse, I'm just competent in fighting and I couldn't touch them. I am better at defending myself than the average person and these guys destroy me in training. I can't even feel what is happening besides the end results of pain. So I don't care what articles say about what he or someone else "says". Because these guys I know are some of the most honest I know. They don't bullshit when it comes to defending themselves and useful martial arts. One of them was Jesse Glover's best friend and the others were students of him. I'll trust their words over your ignorance.

Your the fakest "fan" there is. "I happen to have studied bruce lee my entire life and read every article about him" lmao u haven't done shit you just respond to every comment hating on his legacy. The truth is we will never know just how good bruce lee was at fighting or if he could fight at all. But you can't say he wasn't a fighter without evidence. His philosophy and the moves he perfected are used in mma today. Sidekick ,oblique kick , you need to stop being ignorant and accept the fact he most likely could fight . Didnt bruce lee himself say that " a man who has trained boxing and wrestling for 1 year can defeat a life long martial artist" . We know lee was not deluded he knew kung fu didn't work which is why he changed from wing chub to taekwondo ' ,judo , boxing, and muay thai. He knew mixing those styles up could create something more than single styles. Jeet kune do =mma So pretty much your claims of it not working are bs because jeet kune do is mma
@rblxduelist
@rblxduelist 4 жыл бұрын
@Zeek Banistor he wasnt a tournament fighter because the rules went against his philosophy completely you have to understand that there weren't any mma tournaments at the time. No ufc no bellator no pride . There was only single style tournaments like karate tournaments muay thai tournaments ,judo tournaments where bruce couldnt use his mixed martial arts. Which is why he said he sticked to street fighting he also didn't believe in rules and was totally with eye gauging and groin kicking opponents. And probably pulling hair as well. He said use anything as a weapon to win a fight. So the answer is no he was not a professional fighter. But he was alledgedly a street fighter with high knowledge of mma. Mma is meant for self defence all these people thinking you need a belt or promotion to be a good fighter are deluded. In fact did you know most mma fighters in the octagon lose in street fights because they have bad conditioning without gloves. And end up breaking their hand. Also they are weighed down by their jeans/tracksuits and heavy shoes meaning high kicks are too slow and risky. But then look at bruce lee in his video where he sparred his student look how fast his high kick was with full protective gear on . Lees moves when making movies were so fast they had to slow the footage down so you could see his movements . If you study his movement in this video I'll try find it for ya you can compare it to the early mma guys in ufc and it was 10 times better. He was ahead of his time . But would probably lose to the fighters that are here now . But before people had well rounded skills bruce lee sure had good techniques kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWauc6F3YpeBeMk

The feint into a roundhouse is actually a staple in Tae Kwan Do. Fighters would switch quickly between their lead legs almost like a running man to keep the opponent guessing as to which leg would eventually land the kick. However, if you watch most Tae Kwan Do sparring matches, you can see the risk heavily weighs on if the opponent chooses the right moment to counter. Skilled fighters understand this move is a pretty much make or break moment. If the opponent chooses to intercept whilst switching stances, they could more often than not swipe the fighter to the floor. The feint though can be used with a number of finishing kicks. It can be used to pounce forward and ending with a front kick aimed above the waist. This combination if connected properly usually sends the opponent backwards and typically out of breath. I've seen the feint used with a high front kick to the chin which almost always knocks the opponent out. A lot of TKD sparring matches are actually pretty bloody, even with the head guard and torso pads. Most people assume wearing these pads brings down credibility of TKD, but they fail to grasp that the pads are necessary for the very fact that most TKD strikes are focused on the head and torso. Besides, as a former fighter myself, I will gladly attest to the necessity of them. The pads themselves are not as thick as they seem, in fact the purpose is to dissipate the impact from a heel or shin kick. They still hurt by the way. Hope this sheds a little info on the use of feints, forgive me for the continuous rant on after that. :)

Nice Work Brother! Been sitting here going nuts about some MMA fans who don't get who Bruce Lee was or did for fighting. As you mention he was moving forward so fast, I guess some people still haven't caught up. 1995 was when I discover his teachings in The Tao of Jeet kune Do. I've told every student of mine to get the book, for it should be the textbook of this particular subject. You need a textbook for Math, History, Science so I Thought the subject of fighting SHOULD have a text book. But the first time I saw Jon Jones use a sidekick I knew where he got it from. In fact I can tell what fighters have been influenced by that book. One can tell right away. It used to drive me crazy when Joe Rogan was calling the OBLIQUE KICK FROM SAVATE an "Elliptical kick" but back in those days the sport was still in its infancy. Fighters only relied on Muay Thai and BJJ and just like that they thought they were ready to jump into the Octagon and well, they paid the consequences when they would encounter a SAMBO fighter for instance. Now, the fights are getting better, more sophisticated and exciting in terms of strategy and action...there is just more MEAT in that bone, let's just say. There ARE 2 types of fighters, The Street Fighter and the Schooled Fighter. God help the man who decides to go up against a "SCHOOLED-STREET FIGHTER" . Masvidal is a perfect example a little more schooling for that street fighter and it will make him unstoppable but who knows maybe he is already there. Watch out for guys who come from places where you don't get arrested for street fighting. They don't just want to win, They wanna teach you a lesson. So just because you see an Actor or a teacher or an architect, does not mean that, that man or woman has had a sheltered life. Look deeper or you might just pay the price. Thank you for clearing some of those doubts and as always... OUTSTANDING WORK!

I truly believe if Bruce was still alive, he would eventually add a ton of grappling techniques and added clinching in a very fast but proffecient way. After all, when someone is hungry like Bruce, he wouldn't just stick to striking. He would expand in all fields if given the chance. Which is why it's a total shame he died young. What people dont realize is that by the 1970s, right before he died, Lee had evolved JKD to the point where it looked like MMA. People that saw him training at that time had difficulty in describing what they saw. Unfortunately, by that time there was no known footage that showed this phase of his training. By that time, Lee had dropped wing chun and all that trapping and was concentrating on grappling. I trained with Hartsell, a student of Lee's, and he talked about Bruce's progress by the time he died.

@Zeek Banistor Dude, Bruce Lee never said he wasn't a fighter. He is not a prize/pro fighter (a person who fights for money) but he is a fighter. He stated in an interview if he was in a fight (any fight), he is totally self sufficient and any opponent does not bother him, he trains every part of his body and thus prepared. (Look at pictures of his knuckles, it's conditioned to heck). Look it up. Second, he grew up street fighting on the roofs of Hong Kong as a young teenager, though this is not professional fighting, many fighting instincts and grit are learned during this time, such as the case with BJ Penn and other fighters like Masvidal, McGregor and many more. Lastly, one of his students, Joe Lewis an American point karate champion who later pioneered FULL CONTACT American Kick Boxing such as the ones matches fought by Benny the Jet Urquidez, Don Wilson, and even for more modern names Wonder Boy Thompson, who competed in these prior to his UFC career (the rawest full contact fighting allowing punches, kicks, in some circles knees prior to MMA becoming main stream), who was a HEAVY WEIGHT champion, and sparred Bruce Lee stated he was fastest fighter he had seen and even though Bruce was only 145lb or so and 5 foot 7 inches tall, had the power of a heavy weight in his strikes (He is known to have propelled a 300lb heavy bag till it hit the roof with his side kick). You can look all this up to with interviews on youtube. I'd say Bruce was a real fighter, understood combat well, thus was able to pioneer modern fighting concepts way back then, unfortunately due to his death, it only took over 40 years before modern MMA fighers understood the craft and the importance of seeminglessly incorporating striking, grappling, and wrestling all into one to make what you call a complete FIGHTER, not only that but to cross train and condition for fighting as well. Bruce created the first open finger fighting gloves by modifying kendo gloves, prior to this any gloves were boxing gloves only, these gloves are no different, just bulkier than MMA gloves of today - this allowed for combat to flow into striking, grappling, and wrestling (Like an MMA fight today keep in mind even the first UFC fighters did not do this not cross train like UFC athletes today) whilst fighting as using boxing gloves will limit all this, he created the idea of using pads for striking in a time where there was no designated striking pads by using modified foot ball equipment to allow for striking whilst training foot work and distancing with a partner a staple of all striking combat sports training now a days - keep in mind, this was not main stream at all in the 60's and 70's. No body who is not a fighter would understand this. Put this into perspective, it was in 1970 he had already thought of all this, he was WAY ahead of his time. Any body who has the audacity to say Bruce Lee wasn't a fighter knowing what the man has really done, understood and accomplished, themselves, are not fighters. If it's just ignorance, then be educated first before jumping to conclusions.

People don't realize that Bruce Lee fought against others in actual fights several times. According to Robert Clouse (Enter the Dragon's director) during filming in Hong Kong, the stunt men and extras for the movie (you know, all those guys in white gis in the bad guy's island) would often challenge Bruce Lee to fight them, to which he always said yes, and would always beat them within one minute. This is not Bruce's telling the story, this is Robert Clouse.

With current MMA, where would he be weight wise? 110 - 120 max. I would put my money on Master Lee against anyone currently fighting. No sweat. I think Master Lee enjoyed teaching his method and philosophy than actually taking it to the Octagon level. Remember also, he was an Actor his whole life.

This is a cool video. Yup many JKD moves have proven effective in MMA. Dana white called Bruce Lee “The Grandfather of MMA.” Even in his notes you see flicker jab to double leg. He died is 1967 and was so ahead of his time. In modern times we’ve incorporated much more wrestling into our curriculum because that’s where it was headed. Dictating where the fight goes with distance control from old school JKD and incorporating wrestling takedown defense is a good mix. 3 elements to combat striking, grappling and weapon. A compete martial artist needs to understand all. Unfortunately on KZbin you mostly see trapping representing JKD but a Bruce incorporates much more striking from 1967-1973. He studied boxing and took principles from fencing, like interception, and applied it to hand the hand. Many different kicks exists in our art besides just the side kick. Jkd kicks include roundhouse kick, front kick, sidekick. You do see boxers and kickboxers trap the hands all the time. It’s one way to deal with the pillar or shell defense. We also include foul tactics (eye gouges and groin strikes as examples) in our curriculum because at the end of the day they’re effective. However, can’t only solely on them. Footwork and technical striking plus grappling is obviously needed as well. Thanks for this breakdown. You always put out great stuff.!

Groomsman JKD is not a combination of the several arts Lee learned and used, rather a philosophy or set a principles anyone can employ in order to express yourself and free yourself from the limitations of styles and fixed patterns. But if I have to answer I think learning JKD would be different from learning individually since the way the techniques are used and their combination with other principles is unique (like using wing chun trapping with a more boxing like stance instead of the more squared wing chun stance)

@Zeek Banistor First you should spell it correctly Jeet Kune Do 2nd if you basing the effectiveness of a fight system based a portion of a man notes of course you gonna think it's ineffective What if you did that for ever art I would guess you have the same impression bout those arts too? There are many qualified instructors of the art besides well written books Bruce didn't leave some notes and that's his art... He trained many students and a handful were certified by Bruce himself What does having abb in another art have to do with jkd and it's effectiveness?

I have always told my students will work with constant training and practice over and over to train your nervous system. This will improve and quicken your reaction times along with using perefreal vision and seeing the whole body of you opponent. Circling your opponent shifting and sliding to avoid hits and strikes.

At only 5 foot 7 I still can't help but think if Bruce could've gotten the chance to compete in the UFC he would've dominated. His dedication was so far ahead of its time.
