make sure you stick to it! heres another exercise that would help if your aiming for the speed of bruce use sound or a sound as the instigator to fire out a punch or a kick.... this will help improve your explosiveness and make you almost superhuman in terms of anticipating a punch or a kick coming towards you.... like shadow boxing, and you can also turn this into a game.... so for instance everytime you hear a ring of a bell throw a punch or a kick as quickly as possible and chamber as quickly as possible.... so basically your almost mimicking bruce lee there in the video where hes looking at the mirror throwing out punches.... even better is to turn this into an ongoing exercise.... so like the drinking game you drink everytime someone or something happens you throw a kick or punch everytime someone says a key word or something happens this will test your concentration, alertness.... i did this for 24 hours to 2 days straight freaked out friends and family and strangers but boy was i fast... even trickier is if your holding shopping in both hands or something, you feel your twitch muscles twitch and acknowledge to yourself that you caught the instigation without throwing or kicking or getting thrown in a jail cell for freaking out bystanders... even better if your able to complete a punch or a kick while doing something else without endangering yourself and others around you...

This was a great video and I am surprised how quickly it was uploaded. I knew it would've probably been pre-recorded before the first part but I thought it would've been spaced out a little longer. That's the great thing about this channel. Well, one of many great things about it. The fact that everything is so well done and nothing is held back. There are plenty of others who would easily do so or make one or two videos into a series of short ones. That's not challenging toward creativity and ingenuity. This was well produced and edited. I really like the simplicity in all of the details and explanations - which makes sense, given the philosophy of Bruce's art. It was also a nice welcome back to Grant. I've looked forward to seeing more of him from last year's videos and hopefully there will be more collaboration in the future. Thanks for all the research, documentation, videography and other (lovingly so) hard work and dedication into the video and the subject matter. Have a great evening!

Reading The Art of Expressing the Human Body on the advice of SuperFunctional 2, and I’m just starting to realize how much your program is inspired by Bruce Lee. Guess it shouldn’t be a surprise given the number of Bruce Lee videos. Either that, and/or you just have the same objectives: how to become the most physically-capable you can possibly be. For him it was all about being the best fighter…but what that requires is pretty much the same as all-round functional athleticism. There only things your program doesn’t emphasize as much as I would like: striking and flexibility, but I’ll try to squeeze those in too, without cutting anything else out if I can find the time. Amazing what a pioneer he was in so many ways, practically inventing modern action movies, MMA, and functional fitness. When people are argue about whether or not he really could beat up everyone in the world, I’m like, um, you’re kind of missing the point…

With some variation, most of the techniques displayed here are similar to some of the ones I used on a daily basis; of course I always included at least two days of pure cardio, strength, and flexibility routines. Every day of “shadow boxing” began with stretching to warm up the muscles; the starting slowly with complete focus, I gradually increased in speed and power. No kicks should be thrown with an extended leg; just as you don’t throw a punch with your muscles tight, it makes the kick or punch slow, easy to see coming, and easy to intercept. A side kick is a good example to work from; the idea is to work on it slowing to gain the proper form/technique, precision, leg strength/core stability, and lastly work on the snap from the hip that gives true power. Begin with a bent leg, raise it slowly to a point several inches above the hip, and hold that pose for a slow 10 count (repeat as many times as you can do it perfectly). When this is mastered; from the same bent leg pose, slowly extend the leg to a head high position and slowly return to the bent leg pose (mastering this with stability takes time and must be accompanied by strengthening the stabilizer muscles using other exercises, you must also work on flexibility so you body doesn’t resist the movement). Ultimately, you will be able to slowly raise the bent leg and slowly extend and hold your leg extension, then slowly return your leg to the high bent position, and return to a standing position (this takes a great deal of work, but after it’s mastered you begin to add speed, then hip snip when striking). The other thing I worked on, and found very effective in real world fighting, was learning to stand with my power side forward. Everyone expects the hardest punch to come from the rear hand or leg because you have distance to generate power from the leg or upper body mass. This is not necessarily true though. Great striking power can be generated in a very short distance when your whole body snaps it forward. Bruce Lee mastered this technique, as demonstrated by his one inch, and six inch, punch. When it’s executed properly, it’s more effective than throwing a strike from the power side to the rear; though there is a time to use both positions. One great advantage in learning to use both positions is that the opponent can’t predict your intentions. Learning to strike from the non-dominant side is also a slow process, but when you can work effectively from both sides, along with power side switching front to rear, then you have a true advantage. My workouts included the heavy back, speed bag, rhythm bag, leather wall pad, and a very hard heavy nylon/leather bag filled with 30lbs of pinto beans (until you can strike perfectly every time, tape your wrists and use padded grappling gloves; and don’t hit to hard, to soon or you will sprain or break your wrist or fingers.) To improve my kicking speed and stability I also made weighted foot bags that attached to the top of the foot. This added about 1lb to my foot which made all leg exercises, and kicking, much more demanding; but when you take them off your speed and power are incredible. I did the same with wrist weights to force myself to strike faster and harder in timed strike exercises. It’s amazing the new levels your body can reach when you carefully increase the level of difficulty.
