I was 16, and had just dropped my first girlfriend off at home. To put it bluntly, I wanted her in a bad way. While driving home that summer night with the windows down, this song came on the radio. It was the first time a song read my soul. Now, I'm almost 50, and that girlfriend is my wife. This song takes me back to that night, with that same feeling every time I hear it.

I remember back to when those PMRC people were criticizing these lyrics. They were saying it was promoting stalking and violence, which was total BS. To me, the music is about loneliness and the walls we erect between us that perpetuates it. Also, the video could be about happiness. She lives a privileged life with lots of wealth, but are you happy? The song says it all. He was expressing how he felt, not suggesting any specific action. Absolute masterpiece of a song.

She was 19 and out of my league, and she had a boyfriend. I knew her for 3 weeks thanks to our mutual friends. We never talked to much but we would always give each other silly looks... There was a students' party of a kind... I was 22 and pretty shy but managed to have a nice conversation with her that night. I didn't expect anything to happen... Later that night she asked me to escort her to her dorm not far away. We were in her room, and this was one of the songs she had on her mp3 CD. We did not kiss or anything. She called me tomorrow to tell me she broke up with her boyfriend.... I was surprised and my ego was high as the sky, I did not expect that. We were crazy for each other for five months and then she broke up when she had to return to her hometown. 19 years later, a year ago, I see her with her daughter (probably 6), I was with my son (9) and she gave me that same silly smile and we said not a word to each other.

It feels like you’re floating the moment it starts. There’s this aching feeling in your heart because you know everything you’re imagining will never happen. It’s about wanting something you can’t have, longing for something you just can’t reach. It captures yearning, desire, frustration, and deep sadness so well. I could listen to this song for hours. @theoriginalbillholt8 жыл бұрын
Yes and no, in my opinion. ; ] The crappy warble when the song begins is just as if you're listening to this on a tape deck in a car back in the '80s. However, in all fairness, I'm sure that wasn't in the original release. VEVO left awful production blunders in other videos, too. Cinderella's "Don't Know What You Got (Till It's Gone)" comes to mind, with a squelch at its 3:57 mark -- right in the middle of the song's arguably best part, which is, again arguably, one of the nicest guitar solos of the '80s. The foley work here is shoddy, but I don't mean to nitpick. The white-clad wonder woman's voice has a different reverb characteristic because it wasn't recorded on the spot in the scene. The keys falling into Bruce's hand don't sound 'correct' either. Those two examples of substandard editing could surely have been remedied back then, but there are also many sound effects in more modern productions which I opine could have been done better. What I see as timelessly great is the overall genuine artfulness of the production, which I believe is another way of saying what you've said. The decision to build tension with the riveting moment where viewers realize they aren't going to see the woman's face is a hallmark of artistry. Great video, as it captures the essence of the song. There were lackluster videos back in the '80s, just as there are today. "I'm On Fire" stands apart because it has substance and character, hinting at a dark subject with an element of decorum, or at least basic decency, which 'art' and life seem to glaringly lack today.
@troemich8 жыл бұрын
There`s also the bouncy picture at the beginning. Looks like Telecine Wobble. Watched the same video somewhere else and it`s not happening there. So VEVO screwed something up during the transfer from the film reels. Or somebody else did and VEVO just uploaded it for promotional purposes.

I think that the feeling that some people feel when listening to this song comes from the fact that the song has some reminiscence of the nostalgia that hurts the most, the one of what could have been, but never was. And in this case it was "complicated" for something to happen, it was better to leave the key and go and think what could have happened. I think the song brings us something of the perfume of our own youth and what we could have done and everything that happened, that's why a knot forms in our stomach, because we realize the finitude of our own life. The song has something of the sadness of Tango. Alejandro, from Uruguay.

Back in the 80's watching this video as a kid, I always wondered how Bruce Springsteen was going to get back home at the end of this video.
@p4horror10 жыл бұрын
I know, me too. According to her, they live way up in the hills so Bruce is a long way from home. Either he will be doing a lot of walking and bus rides (if the buses are still running) or finding a pay phone and calling up a cab, but paying a grip in the process.
@vanessae52010 жыл бұрын
I still wonder. Does he take a bus? Call a taxi? How does he get home???
@LoveNotLabels10 жыл бұрын
Vanessa Enlow The stupid dumbass probably walked all the way home! Even if he didn't he's such an idiot for taking it to her house when she said not to! And does that help get him that women? NO! She just forgets about him! What a dumbass! She would have remembered him better if she had come back for it! No wonder so many men are stupid AFC's today. They are probably Springsteen fans!

lol once he gets to a highway he hitch hikes! But since he has so much desire the walking doesn't matter anyway :)

I respect Springsteen's lack of vanity. Most musicians try so hard to look so damn sexy, cool or god-like in all their videos. He's always a mechanic covered in grease or a lonely man in a pub. It makes him feel so human.

a lot of those guys were scripted and did it for the fame in the 80´s but bruce does it for the music and a lot of them had big egos to bruce doesnt have that nothing wrong with a ego though ! just dont be a dick !

Loved listening to this song with my dad in his HVAC service van for years and when my parents were divorced I used to sleep on an old army cot with a flannel shirt for a pillow, I miss my dad. Passed in 2011🥺

1:12 -2:43 is a civil war between his heart and his brain. The heart wants her and guides his drive to her house, but if you watch close enough you see the brain waking up and having a realization the amount of pain he's going to cause if he goes through with listening to his heart. In the end brain wins out Bruce wakes away with a smile. The right thing is rarely the easy thing to do.

so, i grew up in the 80's, my childhood was 79-97. My music was was mainly Cure/Joy Division. I was thinking about this song today, and how i wouldnt dare tell my friends i like springstein. i figure 25-30 years later i can like it, playing through my head everyonce and a while for that long. I sit down with an acoustic guitar today, to finally play this, with in two tries i had it down, beautiful muted rhythm and vocals. right away, its a natural, cool song. wife loved it. if you play an instrument, play this for youre girl tonight, you have no idea how it pays off. if i did this decades ago, would have lost virginity that much sooner. cheers.

Same for me. Bauhaus, Cure, Joy Divison, Gang of Four, DNA, etc.. But I love this song. It's very romantic. And I love him too. As a man and as a musician. Respect for Bruce Springsteen. One of the best .. Ever

That's a long ass childhood lol. If you were born in 1979, then it's 82-91 or so... about age 3-12. Teenagers are kids but when I hear the word childhood, I think of believing in Santa and the Easter Bunny and stuff.

And it does seem like all genres of music from back then flow together more these days, it can ALL get lumped into just being called "80s music" now. I mean everyone who grew up then is in their 40s, so of course it's not gonna be as cliquey and genre specific as when the fans were 14. Plus people's tastes also can mature with age. There's 80s metalheads who now admit they like Madonna and stuff.

Why do pedos long for the innocent days that people did not recognise them as pedos? This song is about a pedo stalking a little girl, checking that her father is not around to unleash his great desire on the little girl.

Thirty years ago, I remember a coworker at McDonald's dancing to this. Watching her dance to this was something I never forgot. She went on to Nursing School and my life went in another direction. Yesterday, I had hip replacement surgery. When they brought me to my room after recovery, the nurse was settling me in and her name tag dangled in front of me, and I said to myself, "Now there's a name I haven't heard from in a long time... "
