And if you never saw a Springsteen show...it's 3-4 HOURS of this intensity. You have NO IDEA what a live show is unless you saw The Boss, back in the day.

I saw the Boss and the East Street Band in Ottawa Canada in the late 70s - the Born to Run tour. I was spoiled. Broken leg. I was dancing on it and waving the crutches in the air. I played the sax and met the God of the sax, Clarence Clemons. What an experience!

I remember when I was 20, I’d heard the name, but I really didn’t know who he was. One day this guy came in the office after a concert and was just waxing poetic about this guy, it was just a random conversation-chit chat with the receptionist, but he was such a huge fan, he couldn’t quit talking about him. This guy grew up in Jersey, and had seen him in the bars, so he was familiar. I remember he very pointedly told me, “if you never go to another concert in your life, make sure you see Bruce Springsteen.” That was 44 years ago, and I’ve never forgotten that one random conversation with some guy who’d come in the office that day. I’ve still never seen The Boss! But at that time I was a little obsessed with one of Dallas’ own home-grown boys. I had this bootleg tape made in a club in Austin. It was Stevie Ray Vaughan. Three years later, just as Stevie was really making his mark, one of his best friends wanted me to go out with this friend who was going to be in town for the weekend. She said, he would love your vibe and you’re the only person I know who could keep up with him! Well, tell me about him! She said, “Well, he’s a musician.” “Oh”, I said, “I don’t date musicians. They’re all f*ck arounds!” She assured me he wasn’t like that! And then said, “well, you might have heard of him,” and she told me his name. Everyone knew I was a big fan, and she had just moved here from Austin, so I thought the guys were playing a prank on 3:22 ! So, I said, “oh, yeah, sure, I’ll be there!” I promptly forgot about it and no showed. I have lived to regret that one too…oh, the musing of an old women, listening to Springsteen in the middle of the night, lamenting her wasted youth…❤

Took a girlfriend kicking and screaming to this tour, she insisted she hated Bruce and wouldn't enjoy it, she held out for two hours, arms folded and just foot tapping, by the end of the show she was wild and couldn't stop dancing, clapping and joining in with the sheer joy that only watching Bruce can give a person. We married a few years later and 40 years later, she's still the biggest Bruce fan in the world

This is the essence of Bruce fandom and the affinity we have for his music. But also, this is the essence of our love affairs with ANY band. Give them a chance and you’ll love them forever. This band just rocked faces off and knew how to have fun on stage while doing it.

Just imagine if you were 29, raised as a Fundamentalist Christian, and this was the first rock concert you had ever attended? It would literally blow your mind. Ha, that's what happened to my buddy Carol. In the mid-90s we were living together in a small town in out-state Missouri. In the late 70s and early 80s we were students at SLU Law School. The song in this video gives you a taste of what she saw. I had gotten tickets to this tour when he came to play in St. Louis. After what seemed like a never-ending time of multiple hours, and never sitting down, she exhaustedly turned to me and asked if all rock concerts were this great. I could only smile, shake my head, and say nope.

A great follow up would have been to take her to see the Clash. For my own story, I took my Vietnamese girlfriend to see her first rock concert when Bob Dylan came to Saigon - with Charlie Sexton going absolutely nuts on lead guitar. Afterward, she was speechless.

From Brucebase @ 8:40 or so in the clip: According to Dave Marsh, during "Rosalita (Come Out Tonight)" Bruce fell off a speaker stack: "Bruce made one of his patented leaps to the speakers at the side of the stage. But this time he missed. The crowd just kept on cheering, but back at the sound-board where Jackson (soundman Bruce) and I were sitting, the tension was thick. Bruce might do anything, but this was weird; the band was holding the chord, and the chords of 'Rosalita' are not meant to be held for five seconds, much less fifteen. It's a good long drop from the speakers, two feet high, to the floor, a good eight or nine feet away. All there was between Bruce and the hard concrete floor was the band's monitor mixing board, but as he tumbled down, roadie Bob Werner reached out and broke the fall. (He sprained his wrist in the process.) Neither the band nor the crowd could see any of this. The next thing any of us knew, the guitar appeared, tossed atop the speakers. Then a pair of hands and at last, Springsteen's head, with his silly-faced-little-boy grin. He shook his head, pulled himself the rest of the way up, and strapped on his guitar, went back into action as if nothing had occurred.
