I first saw Bruce and the band on this same tour, when I was 17. I knew who they were, but wasn't a yet a huge fan. I can't even explain what it was to see that first show. You were helpless to resist. I do recall this medley, though, being the epic ending to that night.

I first saw Bruce and the ESB in 1978 a the Capitol Theater in Passaic NJ. this was way before KZbin, mtv , videos - anything. I had his records but never really even saw more than a 15 second clip of him live. I had seen many concerts before that one including Led Zeppelin at Madison Sq Garden. BUT I was totally unprepared for what I was about to witness. It was just unbelievable. He rocked the roof off the friggin place, made us laugh, cry and everything in between. I was a ball of sweat at the end, hoarse for a week and my hands hurt. I cannot describe it really. I have seen him 80 times since that first show. No one has come close to Bruce and ESB live. No one.

I watch videos like these every so often and often look at some of the people in the crowd who obviously at the time didn't get it. I often wonder if they, looking back, realise now that they were privileged to watch these guys in full flow. Seeing Springsteen riff with SvZ at the mic together. Seeing Clemons swing and sway with more rhythm than most of the planet's population put together. It's utterly incredible.

We went to scalper and paid fifty bucks (I kid you not) for dead centre seats in the 10th row! It was as this show exactly! This song is an anthem at Duke University. I can only imagine what his daughter felt when she attended there. Students turned their speakers to the windows and Friday afternoons were all about Soringsteen. I first heard the Backstreets/Sad Eyes bootleg on West Campus and froze, not giving a care whether I was late to practice as a scholarship athlete.
@mam1959mam4 ай бұрын
@brucespringsteen-music - I live in Northern Virginia today - but I was desperately poor kid from Chicago with parents who abandoned me in my teens. Made it to Duke on athletic scholarship - poor, nervous and scared. I remember getting through difficult times and not having enough to eat at Duke by playing New York City Serenade in my head and feeling grateful that through it all I had a future. I took the directive to walk tall or not at all literally - an aggressive and fragile show of bravado but better than the reality I faced. When I graduated and received my first paycheck I went and bought a block of cheese which I never could afford. I was playing Racing in the Streets in my head - perhaps the best song of all- the song is about redemption and who in the popular music field could ever write that? I thought I was a tough guy but upon being able to afford that block of cheese I ran to the back of the grocery store and broke out in tears, ashamed to be so emotional. Indeed I was washing the sins visited on me away. The thanks goes in one direction though - to the wonderful music of Bruce Springsteen and his band.
