The fan Bruce is speaking of was named Steve. What Bruce did not mention is that while driving to meet Steve's parents, Steve put a bootleg tape of one of Bruce's concerts into his eight-track player and began to sing along, turning to Bruce and asking him to join with the chorus. Essentially they created carpool karaoke a few decades before James Corden. Steve suffered from diabetes and after a kidney transplant, a heart bypass, and other surgeries he passed away in October of 2003. Bruce continued to visit Steve's mom when in St. Louis (sadly Steve's dad died the year after meeting Bruce).

Because I'm from New Jersey, I have dozens of Springsteen stories. A newspaper colleague of mine told me about the son of a friend who was entering Boston College and ended up as a roommate of one of Bruce's kids. During orientation week, the parents of the kids in the dorm agreed to go to lunch. Of course, Bruce and Patty went. One of the parents said we're all paying for our meals because she knew Bruce would spring for all of them. Once they sat down, Bruce said, "I think you all know what i do for a living, but what do you do?" When the check came, Bruce had already paid it. When one of the parents said they had agreed to split the bill, Bruce said, "I didn't pay the bill; rock 'n' roll paid it."

I was working security in Paris for the Amnesty International Concert 1998.I had been on duty since 05:00,The weather was terrible, The boss showed up around 17:00, got out of the vehicle on the wrong side , straight into the crowd of fans, whom immediatley swarmded on him, Jerry his CPO was on the other side of barrier, I stepped in , explaned the situation, He said quite calmly, he would sign a few autographs and a photo or two. Which he did, remember it was pouring with rain, I managed to get him to the stage entrance, where he thanked me ,offered me a slug of bourbon , also asked how long I had been there and if I had eaten ? 10 minutes later a coffee and large club sandwich appeared. What a total Gent.

Here's my Bruce story. In 1984 I lived in Red Bank NJ, and during that summer Bruce and the band were practicing for the upcoming Giants Stadium concert at Big Man's West on Monmouth St, which was Clarence Clemons' rock club. As I walked by there were a few dozen folks sitting and standing on the pavement listening to the music coming from the club. I hung out an hour or so, then one by one some of the band members exited the club. During this time there was a black Chevelle or similar car (with Crager mag wheels) parked right in front, and some folks were leaning against it. Eventually Bruce came out the front door and signed autographs (and I still have mine). Amazingly, Bruce then walked around to the driver's door of the car and was getting in - it was his car! Even more amazingly, one kid yelled "hey Bruce, how about a ride home!" And Bruce said - "Sure, hop in!" And the kid did, and the two drove off, with Bruce giving him a ride home. (This story was documented the next day in the Daily Register newspaper, the long time local Red Bank paper).

When she sat them his daughter said hi to her and they chatted for a few seconds. My daughter said to Bruce I will see you at the concert Sunday night in the Meadowlands. She mentioned the tickets were a birthday present. He asked her name and said Happy Birthday. At the concert he actually said "Is ( my daughters name ) in the crowd? If you are have a Happy Birthday !" My daughter started crying. What a legend.

Notice, as the story starts, many on the dais were saying a different version of, "You didn't do it, did you?" And that's why everyone today is so lonely and craving connection. Deep down, we want meaningful relationships but we're too terrified to engage the process or trust what life puts in our path. No, I won't sit with you. No, I won't pick up when you call. No, I won't actually accept your invitation. No, I won't share in what you're offering. I'm not saying people should naively get themselves into dangerous situations. But say YES every now and then.

Problem is that people are conditioned to actively fear strangers from an early age now and they grow up with that attitude. Didn't used to be like that. I'm 54 now, but when I was eight, I used to be able to ride my bike to the park or walk to the record store (both over a mile away) by myself. That fostered a feeling of independence and self reliance that I carry with me to this day. I still will start conversations with people I don't know and it has led to forming some fantastic friendships.

This is like how every fans dream of an interaction with their favorite celebrity will go. This may be the only example of it in the history of celebrity. Even if the celeb did continue the interaction for years, the fan would probably ruin it at some point by posting their interactions on social media or selling some to the tabloids. P.S. My Bruce story is from 2008 and it happened in Vienna, Austria. Some fans and myself were at the stadium the day before the show and wanted to spend the whole night there to make it to the first row for the concert (I think this is different to the US. No lottery). In Vienna we were by far not as many people the day before as usual (I think maybe 15 people. In other cities in Europe I remember over a 100). In Vienna this was our luck probably. Around 9 or 10pm there was a van and all over sudden we realized that it is Bruce himself who got out of it. He came straight towards us, shaked our hands and just came to see who is crazy enough to spend two days in front of a stadium just for the show. He grabbed a piece of our pizza, sat down on the floor and spent some time with us. Talking, eating Pizza and playing the guitar one of the fans had brought for waiting time. He was so nice and totally normal. I will always be fan of his and will always love that man.
