If Springsteen put this version out on the album, no one would've missed the point of the song.

I like this version a lot. It is a somber song and I like how this version is more blues focused to reap the somberness out. As usual, Bruce Springsteen rocks and his guitarist skills are just the epitome of perfection.

This version of the song (cadence, extra lyrics, 10 yrs...) made its debut April 30, 2000, at the Cincinnati, OH show. Quite different from the prior USA solo versions. No coincidence that date was the 25th anniversary of the fall of Saigon. One of the many, many hi-Lites of his extraordinary live career. For us at this show, it was absolutely stunning. What an amazing talent.

My late father returned from his tour of duty in Vietnam in 1968. He, along with his fellow "comrades in arms", were advised to wear civilian clothes. Why? They would more than likely have been spat upon as soon as they came off the plane into the terminal in San Francisco. My father was awarded the Bronze Star. Thank god Bruce wrote this song and now usually performs it like this. I saw Bruce in concert a few years ago and he performed the song just like this. I cried uncontrollably while he played. Nuf said. Peace.

This song is kinda patriotic, but it's about a bad treatment of Vietnam vets, i remember old video when Vietnam vets comeback in wheelchair (not all), and hippie's trow fruit on them. That's what you get for fighting for your country.

According to what I read this is what Springsteen wanted on the album but his manager thought if they made into a pop rock song it would've charted easier. His manager was right but sadly Springsteen paid a price for it when the Republicans tried to tag onto the song and missed the point. What they should've done was instead of My Hometown they should've opened the album with the version we all know and closed the album with this version. It would've had a better chance of people not missing the songs message. . I prefer this version.

It is ASTOUNDING how many simpletons thought this was some rocking patriotic anthem b/c the only words they ever paid attention to in the song was the chorus - "Born in the USA." Like, guys....this song is a heavy criticism of this country, specifically of the Vietnam draft and how veterans were treated when they came home. Y'all can take off the American flag bandana and t-shirt 🙄🤦🏻♀He largely stopped playing this song in the US b/c lots of people DO NOT get it lol. He'll still play it internationally sometimes.
