This song's theme has far greater relevance these days in 2022 than it did 34 years ago upon its release! A beautifully sung & performed gem from the 80s. Bruce Hornsby was a true prophet, as he had his hand on the pulse, this general pulse that he converted & channeled into some amazing, timeless & transcendent music. This song along with its powerful theme (corporate greed/environmental degradation) will live on forever. A masterpiece for the ages!

Bruce Hornsby and the Range was a product of its time: the 80s and early 90s. It doesn’t take a genius to understand what cultural and political movements formed that society that they sang about. After last week, It’s safe to say that we now have a much better path to being that America once again.

This is why music in the 80's was the best! It was just a more simpler time. No cell phones, no reality television, no Spotify, no Tik Tok and No Covid. People actually talked to each other. School shootings were unfathomable. And kids rode bikes and played hoops till dark. Malls were safe from bullets. I miss those simpler times so much! 😃

Such a great show. Bruce was also amazing on accordian!! He jumped down off the stage with it during a song and let fans tap a few notes on its small keyboard. Great memories :) After the show, the drummer (John Molo) handed me his drumsticks; the lead guitarist ran out of picks to give out, so he was handing out chewing gum to fans from his own pack. Kim B I agree. I'm 65 and this was one of the last artists/groups I followed. There has always been something great about the original members - the that started it all - in a studio - and made great music. Bruce is a great guy, talented, looks, etc. - and still gives a great performance. But that original music that got them on the radio, MTV, etc. - we shall never forget it. Yes, I remember Elvis, Little Richard, The Righteous Brothers, Glen Campbell, The Temptations, Marvin Gaye, - and the list goes on. Good music still holds up - the test of time. I read the comments of fans much younger than myself, and I hear the same thing - they love the real musicians. And hey, I don't ever remember Bruce and The Range with any rude, nasty lyrics, put downs on women, etc. That is why artist that at in their 70's are still performing, Bill Medley, Johnny Rivers, Neil Diamond and many others. This song evokes one of my best memories of my life. I remember it was at the end of a long half country drive from Texas to Virginia. I was a newly minted Naval Aviator and was coming to my new duty station, NAS Norfolk. This song had been all over the radio and I was fond of BH since his first hit 2 years earlier in 1986 when he came on the scene. At that time I was a recent college grad and was headed back into the Navy to start my trek towards an Officers commission and then hopefully a pair of Navy pilot Wings. Flash forward to August 1988 and I'm popping out of the Hampton Roads Bridge tunnel's South Island in my "Ensign "mobile and am greeted to an awesome sight. Across the bay at Naval Station Norfolk sitting at piers 11,12 and 14 are about half a million tons of aircraft carriers which had been previously and will be in the future my home. It was such an awe-inspiring sight that filled me with a pride that I had never felt this strongly before. I had been part of this team before but on the west coast. Now I was back this time with a new job! Flying off these monsters where before I was deck bound as a jet mechanic. Flying overhead in front of me as I drove near NAS Norfolk were Navy planes "in the break" roaring overhead. The excitement of being 25 years old, a part of thi team with a new career and friends in a new part of this country that I had never been before was incredible. Hampton Roads and the Tidewater of Virginia would be my new home for my time in the fleet with Northern Va becoming my permanent home after my time in the Navy. Thank u Bruce H for the song that is the background for this very special memory.

As much as an accomplished musician Bruce Hornsby is, his songs tell the story about life itself, and to a glorious meaning. The sound here of this timeless masterpiece, is purely legendary. A beautiful song this is. It just never gets old, and puts a lot of great joy in me every time I play it. Kudos to this great man and his wonderful band, and if they haven't already been, they should be inducted into the R&R Hall of Fame.

I'd be honored if some Bruce fans would check out my acoustic piano & vocal covers of 80s/90s classic songs on my channel. Covers include Sting, Prince, George Michael, Elton John, Phil Collins, Tom Petty, Edwin McCain, Michael McDonald, Sarah McClachlan, Billy Joel, Earth Wind & Fire, plus a couple of '010s classics from Bruno Mars and Coldplay. Live acoustic with no autotune. Thanks and peace.

So agree. His love for his craft shows in his enthusiasm for playing and the smiles he gives as he looks out into the audience.

Truly one of the most inspiring songs of any decade

The intro to this has obviously served as inspiration for some of the 1975s extended intros. That first 50 seconds could roll into too shy let me know for example. I hope nobody gets angry at this comment by the way i just love finding songs which have obviously inspired later songs

Wow, that moment at 0:44 when the drum and piano really kick in is amazing! Was introduced to Bruce Hornsby’s music by my dad as a kid growing up in the ‘90s, good songwriting and performances are timeless!

Hornsby got a slew of great songs but this might be his best. Uplifting tune.

Fall 1988...Starting my freshman year of high school, which was unforgettable for the wrong reasons. I was stuck in the hospital for a month, and this song got me through. Even through the hardships there's still hope

I love how the video was edited, how the concert scene was incorporated to the farm and boat scene and how the actors lead the viewers to how the lyrics were interpreted. Love the guys whenever they look out the window: life's reality and simplicity. Though this reached # 35 in charts, truly this is bruce's cherished song for me
