I wouldn't say Bruce is/was underrated. He won 3 Grammy Awards, his song "The Way It Is" went to #1 on Billboard and became one of the greatest songs of 1987, he also made the top 10 with "Mandolin Rain", "The Valley Road" and "Every Little Kiss", he co-wrote "Jacob's Ladder", a #1 hit for Huey Lewis, and "End of the Innocence", a major hit for Don Henley. Plus, he was a member of bands The Range, The Grateful Dead, The Noisemakers and Ambrosia. I'd rather call that being a superstar!

We drove with the windows down and no AC to lakes in upstate NY, drank beer and wine coolers by rivers and waterfalls and all was perfect in life for one glorious moment..that summer ended with I love you and I love you. In 1987, my mother moved us from St. Louis to Boston, during my sophomore year in high school. I had a crush on the guy who sat 2 rows over, way in the front of my English class. A few weeks after we moved, I got a letter from him. We’d only spoken once. This girl I was in orchestra with told him I liked him, and he wrote me. We wrote each other every other day for 3 years. I thought we’d end up together, but we didn’t. I married someone else 2 years later. This song will always remind me of the boy in English class I loved thru his letters.

I have such fond memories of my childhood attached to this song, and my adulthood as well. I traveled a lot for work, and carried The Range with me everywhere I went. I experienced such freedom listening to this song with the windows down at sunset on the highway. What a blessing ❤️. Thank you Bruce!

ah...the ache in this song is tremendous...i remember hearing this on tv and the radio at 11 or 12 years old....feeling it but not entirely understanding just how beautiful this music was. but it has stayed with me for years and i have grown to know exactly what it can mean..."when the day goes down on the water town/when the sun sinks low all around/that's when i know i, i need you now/yes, you're what i miss..."...love it!

I remember owning a copy of "The Way It Is" on cassette when I was 16. This song (track #2 right after "On The Western Skyline") was my FAVORITE Bruce Hornsby tune!!!! I also remember the heavy rotation of the video on MTV during the late spring-early summer of 1987. Fabulous song!!!!

I remember growing up in the UK and being struck by 'The Way It Is'. I bought the album and learned the songs, but I never came across anyone else who spoke about Bruce Hornsby and The Range. That's why I am so glad to discover through the internet -places like this one - that there is a huge number of other people who like him too.

I do remember Bruce Hornsby and the range the way it is and the follow up songs. In the United Kingdom dare I mentioned his name Jonathan king who was the producer of the TV series no limits played him a lot and so did the radio stations he did fall under the radar a bit. I know people who went to his gigs it like why clime fisher were not bigger in the United states of America even those rob fisher other band naked eyes were bigger in the USA than UK's.it works that way sometimes.

I used to really like this song as a 90s kid. It's not really the typical 80s sounding song, it's kind of country and soft/adult alternative which gives it a breezy timeless feeling.
