the certified welder in me has to say For something like that you would be a lot better off to use stick welding or a dual sheilded flux core rather the hardwire...and any weld like that "structure" you should be welding upwards rather then downhand. im sure it will be solid once plated but just some tips for next time cool truck ,channel and videos i watch them all from canada

I used to work at a scrap yard, and we scraped a lot of trucks that were in the same condition as the ones here. Bruce is taking two trucks that could have been scrap, and turning them into one great truck. No need to be so pissy that the international didn’t get a frame off restoration, be so the whole thing could have just been turned into Pittsburgh tools.

Use a longer straight edge like a 8’ level to make sure the frames are straight. Top and sides. Now that the left side is tacked, please accurately measure from center of front axle to center of each rear axle on both sides to be sure you’re square. No guarantees the axle alignment was good on the white truck. Measure, measure and measure again. Wish you had used a stick welder, better penetration. Hope this helps, from an old welder and truck guy.

I've worked on stretching tractor units here in the UK to make wreckers. There's a million and one ways of doing it that will be strong enough and run down the road for what Bruce wants. Cut him some slack . At least he's having a go and like he says he's not hauling from one end of the country to the other 7 days a week. Keep the interesting videos coming Bruce.

Definitely more than one way to skin a cat ! Funny how so many commenters warned him to not make a vertical butt weld, and don't use a MIG welder, yet then heaped on the praise for Ezrider92356's mechanical prowess in the frame extension he did on his 359. Oh yeah . . . Ezrider92356 made a vertical butt weld, and used a MIG welder to do it !
@rocketrob31
@rocketrob31 4 жыл бұрын
Mig welding is strong enough if done correctly. The strength will come with the plate inside the chassis rail. For the wreckers we used to plate inside and outside for extra strength. Really this cabover is a toy and it gets us all talking which at least takes our mind off of the virus if nothing else.

Brucie, you did the right thing splitting the two parts in half and swapping out as much of the materials from the first cabover as you can, use the wheels tires, fuel tanks, make sure you clean those up before you reinstall them on the airforce cabover, it'll make a very nice vehicle to put back together, trust me, it'll work for you.

i've welded many tractor and trailer frame cracks on log trucks for years....never had one issue. DOT only says to weld per the manufactures requirements for commercial vehicles and says nothing for personal use ones. so a DOT looks at a welded frame and knows the requirements for every maker or does he even know its a weld? every one of the manufacturers the bosses called said they had no welding requirements or specification so fair game. most were rejected by DOT for cracks, never came back for welds

Taking those weld bevels down to a sharp point just makes it harder to weld. You should have left an 1/8” landing and you’d still get full penetration if your welder is worth his salt.

I honestly wouldn’t trust that seam to support 46,000 lbs at 70 mph, with that gap. Not knocking your welding, but as a truck driver of long frame trucks for almost 20 years, that was horribly unsettling to watch.

Bruce. When i was learning to weld in college, our teacher said 'as long as the metal ends up as one piece, then it's good.' The only thing is if the weld is messy it needs more cleaning up. But if you're happy and no one can find an issue with it, then it's good.

@@mattmodey5899 youre looking at it wrong if you cant see it. Look at the weld back and the weld to the front. The rear leans at an axle while the front half is level. I know what smaller tires does as I've "chopper/drag style" a beater rwd pickup with tractor tires before keeping the front stock. The frame wasn't properly leveled out entirly. Leaving the rear to be welded back leaning while the front was level. If you think a small 1'x1' level will show the entire frame was plumb let alone sliding it proving a "smoother transition" is level then i cant help you.
