Thank you for posting this! (I too checked it out because of Hurwitz, but was not disappointed). There is a certain emotional energy and power in this performance that Bruckner deserves. Great feel for tempi, rubatos, and ritards where appropriate to emphasize the music. Great performance.

How many more little-known but truly great conductors had careers in the old East Germany? Musical depth instead of narcissistic showmanship... Herbert Kegel's Missa Solemnis, Kurt Sanderling's Mahler 10th, and now Suitner's Bruckner 8th, and probably some others I don't recall, all amazing in their humility, sincerity, and awesome power. Recordings that never lose their freshness.

I've never heard of Suitner, but thanks to this upload now I have. Thanks for the recommendation on Mahler 10 with Sanderling - I haven't heard that one either (but am familiar with Sanderling-he has a great recording of Mahler 6 I like as well). And I agree, Karajan who? I really appreciate these unsung musical heroes who cared more about the music than their superstar image.

All the superlatives here are amply justified. What struck me was the clarity of the timpani within the overall sound, especially when played quietly. Bruckner knew what he wanted and gets it here 200%. Magnificent!!

Although a thrilling capture to an ending of a mighty symphony, I feel this finale tempo to be too fast. I much rather preferred when David Hurwitz said Gunter Wand. Please listen to that finale, HOWEVER not with Berlin, but with Munich. That one is just right. 👍

Great recording indeed, I prefer this one over Wand's 1987 NDR recording, but not over Wand's 1993 NDR and 2001 Berlin recordings. I may even prefer Boulez over Suitner. If I am being cynical it is rather telling for a critic to pick a rather obscure recording, one that is out of print as a favorite :)

I tend to agree. If you are going to pick a top recommendation for such a warhorse an important criteria should be general availability. Giulini/Maazel/HVK/Wand all are readily available in some form or another. I suppose Suitner is available now on KZbin.

And to the person that commented that some playing was "out of tune"... I don't really hear it, and if a few notes in this long, massive symphony were indeed very slightly off, I will gladly sacrifice that for the incredible performance. These players were allowed to let loose and it worked!

Well it is different. Karajan/Vienna is just one of those otherworldly performances. One of those instances where HVK just lays the score before you so to speak and let the VPO do its thing. The brass of the VPO is just surreal and the strings what can you say. It is just one of those things that come together that you cannot really ask for. Amazingly HVK outdid himself in an equally magnificent B7.
