I just watched this performance for the 4th-5th-maybe-100th time! I'm now thinking that the CSO was almost as good as this orchestra in the Bruckner Second. I wonder if the Commentator (below) who dismissed Sir Georg Solti as "an unpleasant conductor to watch" might have been referring to his shirt sleeves showing? As one who was lucky enough to attend Chicago Symphony concerts conducted by Solti, among the things we appreciated is that he was direct. He insisted on the audience being quiet. And when being recorded by London/Decca, we were part of the recording. Sir Georg bowed briefly to the audience, picked up his baton, and began conducting. You would get goosebumps. Thanks, again, for posting. And one viewer asked me elsewhere if I have a favorite Bruckner scherzo. In the Second symphony, the third and fourth movements are so exciting! Two scherzos? All the Best for 2023 from Washington,DC

Terrific performance captured on video. Easily goes to the top of the Bruckner Second Symphony performances available on the internet. I was fortunate to attend many of Solti's Chicago Symphony concerts of the Bruckner Symphonies, later released on Decca, including Solti and the CSO's Bruckner Second.. I believe he performed all of them in the Novak Editions. The SWR here sounds right up there with the CSO. Solti was great live. I don't understand why some critics knocked him at the time and since. Thanks for posting.

I saw the CSO and Solti perform two concerts at Dartmouth College in 1972. Hard to believe that, at the time, the world's greatest orchestra performed at a then Northwoods small New Hampshire college. But it is true. Rumors at the time proclaimed the concerts were funded by an extremely wealthy alumnus. And I think the CSO was on its then USA tour anyways Last year I contacted The College about this remarkable event. Alas, today no one at Dartmouth remembers anything about it. It is all so tragically sad because it was truly a major, and I do mean a major musical event. Oh well, memories inevitably disappear. Along with us all. PS I will not ever forget Solti's Mahler Symphony No. 5 in Spaulding Auditorium. Stunning, simply stunning with his signature up-tempo.

This is not one of my favorite symphonies but because Sir Georg does perfection when conducting this piece I would gladly spend concert time (peaceably) listening to it appreciatively.

As we get closer to September 4, 2024, and the observation of Anton Bruckner's 200th Birthday, I am revisiting performances of his symphonies archived on YT. This remains at the Top of the List! Thanks for preserving this recording of a great conductor leading a great orchestra! Magnificent!!!

Solti had to sell Bruckner to Americans who didn‘t like it. that makes his Bruckner somewhat special.

How I miss the days of Solti being ‘rubber man’ in the Royal Festival Hall in the mid 1960s - and types like Stravinsky appearing in a raincoat to stop encores!

Solti was a great conductor, but I find his conducting style quite funny (and entertaining and somewhat distracting), with his quirky sudden movements and wild arm swings. He always got the best out of his orchestras, though.
