This particular recording radiates a very charming, intimate ambiance. Bravi to Maestro Solti, to the Vienna Philharmonic, and to the excellent recording engineer, as well!

It is indeed a very fine recording. However, dark rumours persist that it was made without a conductor, whatever John Culshaw's marketing spin would have us believe. It has to be admitted that it is a very un-Solti like performance .....

Recording this Siegfried Idyll almost cost Mr. Solti the whole ring cycle that he was in the final stages of completion. RING RESOUNDING written by John Culshaw is an amazing read about the recording of the "SOLTI RING" iT'S A FACINATING READ.

The recording that almost wrecked the Decca Ring. Boskovsky and the usual principals were busy, so Culshaw engaged the (splendid) Weller Quartet instead. At which the VPO nearly went on strike.
