I was on a business trip and I watched Interstellar for the first time on the plane. No distractions, just my mobile in my hands with my earbuds jacked in so I could hear every syllable of dialog. When I got home from my work trip, I quit my job and took another one so I could STAY home and watch my 2 young sons grow up. True story..

I just watched it at the cinema for the first time as part of the anniversary re-release. When I saw it a few years ago, I thought it was a great film, now, that I have children, I'm self employed and my work takes up all my time and energy. Constantly travelling all over the country and working all hours every day, on my days off I have no energy to do anything. Seeing the film now makes me want to quit and do what you did.

This movie is a masterpiece. So many small details that add up to a beautiful story. Brands reaction to Murphy questioning her if she knew it was all a lie is perfect, because they both experience the same emotion. Murphy is question if her father left and abandoned her, and brand is questioning if her father sent her out based on a lie. And I know this movie doesn’t want a sequel. I would be happy with the story of brand on the new planet. Also, Hans Zimmer has performed his songs live, and the interstellar video is on KZbin.

Interstellar feels like a direct allegory to my life after I turned 21. I lived in Phoenix making dogshit money, feeding off scraps, toiling in the Arizona heat fixing old supercars. I dreamt of leaving and heading to a whole new part of the world. I finally made it happen and moved all the way to Australia with the hope of building a better life and potentially bringing my girlfriend and parents over there to live with me once everything was settled. Little did I know - this continent would be like nowhere else on this planet. Its a strange mirrored image of America but with deadly beautiful creatures, ancient flora, and dazzling displays of nature in its most unfiltered form. Chaos and uncertainty were the only guaranteed constant as days turned to weeks, and weeks to months, and months to years in a massive blur. Back at home, my family and friends missed me to the point of agony. Some even cut ties with me because they were convinced they would never see me again. As the years went by, the hope of bringing my loved ones over here faded into oblivion, and I began to realise how much I was missing out on. Birthdays, weddings, promotions, arrivals of children, the loss of my soulmate, all happening at home while I may aswell have been on another planet. My friends and family began to noticeably age with the times, and like Cooper watching the video messages, I felt I had missed everything while I stayed exactly the same - and I began to break down. I realised I was on a path that was truly mine, and mine alone. The characters in Interstellar represent the different facets of my ego. Cooper is my will, Brand is my hope, Romilly is my curiosity, TARS is my charisma, CASE is my anxiety, Mann is my fear, and Murphy is my heart. In my manic wanderlust and unshakable urge for adventure - I brought everything with me but my heart. I left behind everything that mattered in my life as a sacrifice for a better future in a new world. Now I'm 30 - still building. Still setting up camp for a family that may never come. My friends have their own homes, families and careers now. My parents have grown old and they struggle with travelling these days. Everyone still asks me to come home, to be with the people who love me, to pick up where we all left off and try to make up for the time we lost. I would love nothing more than to oblige them. But something about this place - this otherwordly continent - makes me want to keep pressing on. Something in my future wants me to S-T-A-Y

I ususally never write these long tangent-type comments, but this topic has been nagging me for the past 7 years. Finally ive found a video that shares my feelings about the movie. but beyond that, i feel like heres the perfect place to leave my own thoughts about the film, and the experience i had during my last watch. (exclaimer: i do understand that a lot of people are against the use of dr*gs, but i truly believe psychedelics are more of a mentally healing medicine than anything when used the proper way and not abused; sometimes even allowing us to see the world in a new and improved light.) In my opinion, interstellar's plot is an interpretation of the meaning of life. i know it sounds crazy coming from a 20 year old, that barley has experienced life, but hear me out. i've always wondered why this movie resonated with me so much for years, so one day i decided to watch this movie by myself on a tab of acid. after my trip, i realized why this movie always made so much sense to me and why ive always questioned why people dislike the ending. i've done higher doses of lsd before, and high doses of mushrooms multiple times before, but on just one tab of acid, watching this movie on a higher state of consciousness was truly one of, if not the most profound experiences ive ever had in my life. and thats saying a lot, since im pretty sure i met god himself when i went insane on 10grams of shrooms, but anyways this movie's central theme is the meaning of love and how powerful it is. the plot centers around a dying earth, where war and conflict is no longer a thing due to there literally not being enough resources to feed humans anymore. we as a planet decided to kick out our ego, and band together to try to find a solution. at front and center of this endeavor, was cooper. cooper in my opinion was the symbol of humanity as a whole, and when he falls into that black hole at the climax, he is physically experiencing the ego death of all humanity, since this was their last shot at saving the planet. as he enters the tesseract within the black-hole's singularity, he realizes that a higher power(a consciously evolved version of humans in the future) was able to create a physical translation of their discovery on how human consciousness doesn't end at death. those futuristic versions of us were able to evolve to a point where they finally cracked the code to existence, where time isnt linear. they finally figured out how to live and experience life and existence to its fullest. my own interpretation of this idea in my regular life is when people say that time flies by when youre having fun, and it goes by slow when you focus on it. i find that to be some sort of mental time dilation, some sort of proof that consciousness is its own sort of energy beyond our physical bodies. which is also why i believe cooper was able to survive being shredded apart by the gravity of the black hole. his physical body died, but his consciousness somehow blended in with the physical singularity of the black hole. thats also why i believe the big bang and the creation of the universe was all connected to consciousness. before the physical world, a consciousness grew in power so strong that it literally bursted and manifested itself into a physical universe. i dont think consciousness was just something that evolved from nothing and only started to exist once sentient life came to be. thats why as life and our collective consciousness as living beings grow larger and smarter, our physical universe also expands at the same time. we also cant be ignorant and assume that we're the only intelligent life that experiences consciousness and time as a linear dimension. anyways beyond the long tangent, one more symbolism of ego in this movie and its death was none other than Dr. Mann. his arrogance and his selfishness to be the hero of the story is a physical manifestation of ego getting in the way of the last chance to save humanity. when he dies in the docking failure, cooper, the symbol of untidiness and lack of ego, was able to manifest a near impossible feat of docking onto a moving booster in order to save his mission. one last idea i gathered from the final tesseract scene was the idea that regrets are another negative aspect of our egos. regrets are our egos getting in the way of learning from our mistakes, and hindering our ability to live life to its fullest. regrets are a way of thinking and telling ourselves that we could've done better, we could've been smarter than that other version of you. i know this is already a commonly understood concept, but i just found it fascinating how it was interpreted in this scene between him and his daughter. it was only after he accepted his "mistake" of leaving his daughter that he started to figure out a solution. i put mistake in quotations, because once he understood the purpose of his actions in that moment, he realized that it wasn't a mistake. he needed that to happen for him to end up exactly where he ended up at. just like in life, the more we harp on regrets and mistakes, the less we're able to evolve and grow as people, eventually coping with substances like alcohol. but its once we realize the purpose of those "mistakes", we finally start to see changes in our mindset and peace of mind. its like the whole concept of how you wouldn't be where you are without past experiences (good or bad), your consciousness would never be able to mature without learning from mistakes. in the case of the movie, the human race would not be able to evolve if the symbol of humanity's ego (matt damons character) doesn't die, and cooper doesn't kill his own ego in the tesseract. alright i've vented enough about this movie. i just wanted wanted to share my thoughts on the internet cuz my friends are probably tired of me talking about it. but i have to recommend anyone that is into reaching enlightenment or peace of mind to try watching this movie on acid just one time. it finally gave me closure on my ideas of consciousness that have just been piling up each time i take psychedelics. it finally allowed me to put my interpretation of the meaning of life and existence into a movie to help me allow other people to truly experience and feel those concepts, and not just understand them. i know people always say they see and learn profound things on psychedelics all the time (which is totally true and why i believe in the universe-conciousness is real), but this movie specifically i think is the perfect movie to watch on a higher state of consciousness. its central themes and ideas can be appreciated to its absolute fullest. ive always wondered why a lot of people don't like this movie or its ending, but i've finally figured it out. this movie truly just isn't about a space expedition to save humanity, its a movie about existence. i truly recommend going into your next viewing with these concepts engrained into your head, and come back to this comment afterwards. take care.

My grandson told me of this film and invited me to watch it with him. He's 21, i'm 71. My first viewing confused me and he had to keep explaining it. On my next viewing, i became better able to appreciate and understand its deep meaning, which satisfies me more fully. Having seen this video, i intend to watch Intersteller yet again armed with still better insights into the complex nature of the films messages. It is quite an amazing movie, i am discovering. I can’t comprehend that. I’ve seen the film at least 20 times, each time noticing even more of the plentiful details packed into this film. From the amazing science juxtaposed against human fragility, frailty this film has so many dimensions (emotional and physical). I was enraptured by this powerful and audacious story. I'm a science/engineering guy and it takes me out of a movie when I see things in it that don't make physical sense or don't look or work like they would really look or work. This movie just about got everything right. I can take some fudging for story purposes - for instance, to get the time dilation on Miller's planet that they're experiencing (over 60,000 times faster) they'd have had to have been almost right on top of Gargantua - but my attitude is, show me what it would really look like if the action on screen were real. But the dramatic aspects were gripping as well, and the realizations you have while watching, OMG. Like, by the time Cooper, Brand, etc. find the wreckage of Miller's pod, quite some time had passed since her thumbs-up message was received on Earth but when Cooper etc. land in their Ranger, the destruction of Miller's pod *had just happened, perhaps only minutes before*.

The insights and information i was bringing back felt so important but having a daughter under 5 and another baby daughter watching the film scared the hell out of me. I made a decision to stop travelling and stay grounded with my wife and daughters, that was about 7 years ago but i definitely made the right choice. What scared me the most was goin too far and missing my daughter's lives, the scene where Murph is on her death bed haunted me...turned out to be a really important movie in my life and will probably always hold a special place in my heart.

I always thought this movie was too long, and I resented watching it in a way. After watching the movie and noticing what you've pointed out. This is a true masterpiece of a film and a celebration of how far stories on the silver-screen have come. This is not a movie but a true film and spectacul. So I'd have to say you make an extremely compelling case to why it is the greatest film of all time.

Agree - one of the greatest movies of all time. And...not long at all. Time went by quickly as I watched it for the first time. For me it was the way it held an emotion of separation with the hope of the reencounter, one that almost doesn't materialize. As a father of girls, I was immediately struck by a sense of sadness when he left Murphy and sat through the performance with a sense that it wouldn't end well. The whole screening was the conflict of heart and mind - the heart desiring for his quick return while the mind knowing that it wouldn't happen. Interstellar is a sci-fi movie that stirs the emotions in a way no other movie of this genre can.

i rewatched this for the first time in 8 years after an edible. wow, what a ride. i love the chick flick in space vibe. so intense and emotional. when i first saw it back when, i thought the tesseract bit to the end was stupid and now its like, idk how i thought that. its absolutely pivitol to the plot.

I regularly don’t cry when I watch movies. Not even heavy things like the Fives Plot of Star Wars the clone wars or all quiet on the western front. But when I saw Interstellar was the first time I actually cried in years and through the whole credits. And the same thing happened when I saw it the second time and I am sure the third won’t be different.

So with our big family, Sun is our family night, my 5th grade daughter is a huge space fan... she recently just filled her notebook with all the names or our moons in our solar system, yes almost 300 of them. Neil DeGrasse Tyson, you better watch it. We started watching this and she was just enthralled. Now it's going to be our Sunday Night Family Night Flick. Such an amazing story.

Great movie with one flaw - when deciding which planet to visit first, they didn't figure out that the time dilation on the first planet they chose would mean the original astronaut had only just arrived and therefore would not yet have had an opportunity to make a proper assessment of suitability.
