If ever you saw the interviews after the LOTR movies were finished, all the Actors, backing, etc all said the same thing : "Unless all movies are made this way in the future, it will be a step down, nothing will compare" and that they were actually sad it was finished because they knew they had made the greatest move/story ever. Thank you JRR Tolkien, god bless you and may you be at peace in your undying lands.

Actually all of those have been around since before tolkiens work. Wizards have been talked about since the tale of King Arthur and Merlin since the 1100’s I believe, the others came from European folklore, more often than not Swedish/Norwegian. The word orc he admitted came from Beowulf and we’re his own version of “goblins.” However, what Tolkien DID do amazingly is craft a fantasy world with all of them in it, creating magical, real entities that people could fear or relate to. He was so excellent at crafting a fantasy world with different races and their strengths/weaknesses that so many stories nowadays use this template. He truly was a genius and we as humans are blessed to have such a mind enter our world.

I mean, let's be honest, even as an atheist I can recognize story of Jesus is The Greatest Story Ever Told. You may say the Jesus story is lame in comparison, but that's because you have the privilege of two thousand years of hindsight. The idea in the story shook human civilization to its core, and still does. What's the idea? A completely innocent person sacrifices themselves to save what they love. Sound familiar? Yea. Frodo is an echo of Jesus. Oh yea and The King "Returns" in the end. This means the biblical story was "archetypal". It's authors did it first. Sorry if this comes off as too literal and critical, but I'm just saying, the centerpiece of The Lord of the Rings is an echo of the centerpiece of Christianity. Frodo's sacrifice resonates with us because of our culture, which has been permeated by the much older and archetypal story. The Lord of the Rings is so good because it tells the same basic story, but with an insane amount of drama, lore, and embellishment.

I love Lord of the Rings and it's absolutely an all-time classic, but trying to define "the best story ever written" is a fool's errand. Storytelling can be so many things and if you define a single work as the absolute best, you're honestly missing out on so much else the medium has to offer. As many emotions as it creates, there are several kinds of great storytelling LOTR just doesn't provide: - Deep character studies about flawed people whose actions shape their tragic destinies (Hamlet, Breaking Bad, BoJack Horseman) - Social or political commentary (1984, Parasite, Slaughterhouse-Five) - More grounded stories that stress relatability over extravagant worldbuilding (Pride and Prejudice, Almost Famous, The Shawshank Redemption) - Postmodern mind-bending narratives that challenge the idea of what a story can even be (Infinite Jest, Memento, Fight Club, If On a Winter's Night a Traveller) - Any kind of mystery, comedy or horror Tolkien's work has some elements of these stories but they're not the focus. And they don't need to be. Lord of the Rings may be the pinnacle of epic fantasy, but it's not the pinnacle of all storytelling. Such a thing doesn't exist, and that's exactly what allows for the beauty of creative expression.

I guess you could say Sanderson is getting close in terms of the scope of his universe, but in terms of worldbuilding, and crafting a fantasy world, I don't think he´s even remotely close to Tolkien. I´m a Sanderson fan and love the Stormlight Archive. These books are massive, but if you look at what he actually accomplishes with those books, it´s kinda disappointing. He manages to craft some amazing characters (I love Dalinar), but in terms of crafting a deep fantasy world, it´s not that special. However, to me, Sanderson books read a lot easier and more pleasant than a Tolkien book, and the characters in Sanderson´s work might be easier to follow along because they are written in a modern way, but I think if you read LOTR, most of Tolkien´s characters are deeper than one might think. At the end of the day, Sanderson may have crafted an amazing connected universe, but I don´t really see his worlds as deep or as mesmerizing as Middle Earth. But that could also be the current state of fantasy. Most readers and authors might not be so interested in crafting a deep world and lore. I love both, but to me LOTR is timeless and Sanderson has yet to prove himself with Stormlight.

Why is it necessary to look down on something to prove that something else, which is completely unrelated, is better? That's not exactly making a good look of the fandom. And additionally I think people tend to forget that different stories are written with different goals - sure, Marvel doesn't compare to Tolkien when we look at it from this angle, but it never was supposed to in the first place. It was supposed to be funny with some explosions. And that they did very well and for that I like these stories. The Tolkien books were supposed to be this grand epos and that's exactly what they became, which is why I love them equally, but for different reasons. Why be exclusionary?

I never understand why the books should be this great. Of course, a good high fantasy book needs a good world, but just because you have a good lore, the book is not that good. Yes, the world is insanely well thought out and complex, diverse and especially when you consider when it was created a milestone in the history of fantasy literature. He writes as if he were telling a legend or a fairy tale from his world. In a style as if it were for children. Of course there are passages in which it is very nice, but also many in which it bothers me a lot. Unfortunately, far too often the feeling of being just an observer and not part of the story leaves me behind. Surely you can like or even love the style in which he writes. It sounds cheesy now when I say I need more inner life of the characters, but thats how it is. Then the story. The ultimate evil against a small group with the final goal of throwing away a ring. A lot of war and slaughter. Of course also from friendship, but here, too, I don't feel like part of the group. The story just never felt really exciting for me. And it also fits how many in my environment just started the books and never ended. Especially good book would captivate readers more, keep them. To be fair, you have to say that I read Lotr because I felt, you just have to read it. Not because the story interested me. Maybe that's why I never came in completely and never felt it. I don't think the books are bad either, they're pretty good, just not the best. All just my opinion.

I love Tolkien, he's the reason I'm writing. He is the grandfather of fantasy. I have read and own all of his works. I can tell you that Steven Eriksen's Malazan's story is incredible.

My favorite universe in this genre after Tolkien is Berserk by Kentaro Miura. That world and the story that he was telling until he passed away is worth checking. Comparing MCU to those universes is heresy (well, at least that's how i view it personally).

Well it's all matter of opinion. I like the Lord Of The Rings, but there is much unrealisticism in the trilogy. Not with the fantasy but with the fundamentals of war, kingdom/castle, designs, functions, defenses, and etc. Also the amount of near death scenes and then someone gets saved is significant. And there's just overall so much unrealisticness within the trilogy plus the hobbit despite that it's a great trilogy

Similarly to The Hobbit movies the best thing about the MCU is how good Evangeline Lily looks in them

Yeah as good as it is, Lotr is not the greatest story ever told, Tolkien is not the greatest writer who has ever lived and the MCU doesn't come close.

I never lived in the days of Tolkien. I grew up with the movies. And watching those, makes the books so much more satisfying, and I am forever grateful for the impact Tolkien has made on my life. I wish people now could understand the magnificence of these books, and see the masterpiece behind it.

I agree. Think about it. Who has such an expansive universe that is actually intriguing, Marvel is too fantasy. Star Wars comes close in 2nd to me but only because its not as detailed and disney totally ruined all the cool cannon stories we had once. Lord of the Rings is what many could say is the golden child of what a story should consist of.

What I like about LoTR it is an allusion to the Holy Bible. Gandalf the Grey, for example, dies fighting the Balrog but returns as Gandalf the White, much like how Jesus came back after he was crucified. Frodo also represents Jesus, bearing the ring (the world’s sins) and resisting its power (Satan’s temptation)

Awesome and funny video about Tolkiens stories, but you lost my support when you said the closest thing to Tolkiens stories would be the Marvel Universe. That's just an insult to Tolkien. Not saying Stan Lee didn't have great ideas, but to compare him to one of the greatest stories ever written, definitely took it too far for me.

No, he did. He was talking about Tolkiens war experience and knowing C.S. Lewis, one of the best writers ever lived. All that combined with his studies and experience from The Hobbit and his multi language skills, it is very unlikely someone will ever beat what he created. All in the video, just watch it instead of doing unnecessary comments. 😅
