No one defines what you just wrote more than Glen Sather and his 20 + years of absolute ineptitude, arrogance and failure on nearly every metric once he came to NY. Sather was a clear one-trick pony who struck gold in Edmonton and rode the shoulders of Gretzky and Messier all the way to the HOF. But when he had to rely on his own skills, he proved that he was more qualified to run a lemonade stand than an 'Original 6' franchise. Only more pathetic than Sather is the owner who tolerated and encouraged such mediocrity.

And yet as a bunch of real insiders, none of you can seem to speak to whether or not the coach lost the room and couldn't get the play that was expected by management, Monty is a great coach. is he the right coach for this group? Everyone always acts like somebody gets fired by a bunch of ogres. Sometimes the pieces cease to fit. Oh Sweeney and Neely should go? Because you are working off emotion? You know they aren't the owners correct? Lots of companies fire good management when shareholders demand action. Welcome to the actual, unfair reality of business in sports.

Only seven teams, ever, have won the Stanley Cup after firing the coach mid-season. Which suggests firing the coach is usually done for short-sighted, short-term reasons. For instance, the GM is probably firing the coach to save his own job. Or to give the team a "spark" that will last however-many regular season games before they settle back into natural mediocrity. Or the BEST reason: to placate the disgruntled fans, who have the collective emotional capacity and the attention span of toddlers. This particular GM clearly had a plan for this year: he built a team to play Florida. It looks like he did it badly, since they can't beat Florida. I'm not sure how that's Montgomery's fault. It's not like he developed sudden-onset incompetence over the summer. You'll see Montgomery with another team, and another coach that got fired elsewhere will end up with Boston. Guaranteed. What have we accomplished? What have we learned?

@@biglebowski3961 It's a desperation move which sometimes works. Most players have no trade clauses and coupled with the salary cap, makes it difficult to trade. It's management's only option to save the season. It worked in Edmonton last year. On the flip side, what if Florida fired Maurice two years ago when Florida luckily snuck into the playoffs.

Imho Jeff Gorton made a lot of genius moves while interim GM, core leaders and stars at discount deals, paving 15+ years of success. Not enough of these guys any longer to hide management’s average performance, in spite of internal gems like Bob Essensa. Bs fan since ORR here. Upper management has failed us for years. Two coaches in three years? Who is going to want to come here? Year after year of doing well doesn't get you low draft picks. That's what trades can do. Not Boston though. Lousy drafts, lousy trades, lousy contracts. We got bigger but not tougher or faster. Nobody is EVER in the slot and nobody can deke like Marchand used to do. Sweeney never blames himself.

Not at all surprised. It's sad and annoying, but of course, all sports teams go through a rebuild at some time or another. This year is the Bruins' turn.Considering the results Monty got in the past two regular seasons, I have to think that something changed and he lost the locker room this year. The mistakes the Bruins have made consistently all season long are completely unacceptable for a pro team. That said, firing the coach will do nothing to elevate the level of talent the B's are putting on the ice every night. IMO, Sweeney needs to go as well. The moves he made in the 2022-2023 season worked beautifully until Florida came back from 3-1 down to win the series in game 7, in Boston. (And let's not forget that the B's had the go-ahead goal with only a couple of minutes left in that game.) Sweeney's moves left the Bruins with nothing much in the way of draft choices for the next few seasons, and absolutely nothing to show for it.
