Bruno isn't a culture vulture. A true culture vulture constantly steals from other cultures and tries to pass it off as their own, all while blatantly disrespecting it. Meanwhile, all Bruno does is show appreciation for it, because he genuinely likes it. And there's nothing wrong with that. He also gives credit to the one's who has influenced him.. something else true appropriators will not do. People need to leave him alone.

Dixion But Kpop is literally just pop music in Korean. It’s literally in the name. Everyone knows this. You’d have to be an imbecile to think Koreans invented pop music. Koreans were inspired by the West after their liberation. This influx of music (particularly music videos) lead to Koreans adopting new styles of music because there used to only be trot and changga. Later on Lee Soo Man, founder of SM Entertainment, basically created KPop as we know it today. He actually went to America and studied business and was exposed to the likes of Michael Jackson and more. Then he came back and implemented what he learned and created the idol system by introducing the first ever idol group H.O.T then upon their major success went about forming SES, TVXQ (Tohoshinki/DBSK), SNSD (Girls Generation), SHINee, Red Velvet, EXO, NCT and more. These groups also had the sort of style (rapping versus with sung choruses) with hard hitting choreography that was first introduced by Seo Taiji (the first ever Kpop group who were also inspired by Western music) that is now ubiquitous with Kpop today. The artists themselves talk about songs and artists they like all the time (many Kpop idols are massive MJ fans, examples being Eunhyuk and Ju-ne), especially the ones who inspired them in the first place. They never claimed to have invented a style/genre. Only the ones who are actual producers state that they produced the songs they made but that’s not the same as them claiming to have invented the genre itself. Kpop did not appropriate anything. It was simply derived from Western music. Koreans were inspired by new sounds and genres they had never heard before and went about making such music in their native tongue, which practically all other places have done now as well. People know most music genres originated in America.

People just don't understand cultural appropriation. Cultural appropriation is when someone takes something from a culture that's not theirs, renames it, and calls it their own, and completely dismisses it's creators. Simply wearing or doing something from a culture because you like it is NOT cultural appropriation, if anything it's cultural appreciation when people can bring up different cultures and love them.

I’m so fed up with people comparing Bruno Mars to Michael Jackson or Prince. Bruno is not the *next anything*, and he has said multiple times that Michael is Michael, Prince is Prince and Bruno is Bruno. Just because he found inspiration from them *DOES NOT* mean he is copying anyone. And you can dislike him all you want, but to go as far as saying he’s trash or average is ridiculous. Hate him all you want, but at least be respectful enough to know he’s got talent

I get what your saying, I totally 100% agree with you. The reason why people are comparing Bruno mars to Michael Jackson is because, people are getting mj vibes from him, from his style, the way he makes music and music videos etc so I get what you’re saying tho.
@karrielangit98476 жыл бұрын
Melissa Sanchez That is 100% true. I personally appreciate him for sticking to what is from his heart and being the artist that he is. He is just influenced and i think that he is a tourch berrer that is just spreading the good type of music for theworld to listen to. If they dont listen well thats their problem. Music is available for all races, genders etc. And he is finding ways for him to stand out. True artist cant stand alone, they need som sort of insperation to create the type of music that they wanna do. It just so happens that people like Michael Jackson or Prince are his heros and he just wanna do them justice and at the same time, make his own brand. And another thing, He has to be one of the artist that needs less attention when it comes to any controvercy. He just needs to continue what he is doing, spreading the love the way he wants. Im honestly irritated with Music now adays. Imagine that everyone is a certain kind of ice cream, Bruno said it himself that he does not know what he is doing. So he is creating his world or in this case mixing up his own flavor. What matters is that his flavor of music is unique and if u dont like it then dont eat but if ur open minded with the type of music that he produces then its fine to.
@NoahPrince.26 жыл бұрын
Melissa Sanchez Exactly. I know I'm going off topic a bit, but I remember watching One Direction some years ago, and people would constantly be comparing them to the Beatles and it's like "Dude. 1D is 1D. The Beatles are the Beatles." It's annoying hearing comparisons of anything honestly

Music doesn't have a specific race that its meant for, its a universal language because everyone can relate to the lyrics that the artists put out. Music itself is its own culture, each genre has its own uniqueness that people can identify with, no the race of the person. I always say that you should know your history, and that goes for music too, but music doesn't have a race label, its not white culture or black culture or whatever culture. That is the one thing that makes music great, music is one thing that every culture has in common and we can share it with other cultures to bring people together. I live in a community where most people have Mexican heritage so there is a lot of Spanish music throughout my town and its so fun! I love Spanish music even though I'm Portuguese but it really gets my body going and its songs that never really get old for me.

Bella Winchester Music does have culture. I agree with saying there is no white culture or black culture, but that's only because there are many countries that different races come from and have their own cultures. However, just because music has a certain culture, does not mean that other cultures cannot listen to it.
@gabysusanto4156 жыл бұрын
Onyx Fire but that doesn't mean people of other races can't enjoy a certian genre of music...anyone can listen to whatever music they want
@takjae99156 жыл бұрын
Onyx Fire She didn’t say it didn’t have culture ... what she stated is that music has its own culture. Hip-hop is its own culture. It’s not black culture. R&B is its own culture. It’s not black culture. Pop is it’s own culture. It’s not white culture. K-Pop is its own culture. It’s not Korean culture. Etc. Music STEMS from culture, yes. However, it is not synonymous. Music is meant to bring emotion to the listener. It’s NOT meant to be segregated. Music DOES NOT segregate. Music is a culture shared among all races, genders, sexualities, religions, etc.
@sonder92846 жыл бұрын
Me and my mom just had a conversation about this. She finds cultural appropriation stupid and she is black. My family is Jamaican and my mom said if she saw a white guy singing reggae in America, she would be happy because he is spreading our beautiful culture not trying to “steal” it. Bruno Mars can sing any type of genre he wants because in the end he makes beautiful music. Music is meant to be shared not segregated by race. Great video per usual👌🏾🙂

Meanwhile, everyone else can 'express themselves' and 'music is for everyone' when non blacks want to do BLACK music. It has been this way since pop music began. In fact, the term 'race music' wasn't coined by blacks, guess who it was coined by....

No one EVER called Bruno Mars a culture vulture until this recent grammy's where he won album of the year. Rather than offering constructive and informative reasons as to why they disagree with the decision (because let's face it, there were definitely better nominees), some people just like throw around labels and whine about shit that doesn't exist in order to validate their opinion. The definition of cultural appropriation is taking something that doesn't belong to a their own culture and passing it off as their own or not giving credit where it's due. Bruno ALWAYS gives credit where it's due. Bruno NEVER claims to have created a new genre. Bruno NEVER fucking appropriated jack shit.

I personally believe the people claiming Bruno has been appropriating are simply purists looking for pride so deeply that they have forgotten the hard work that was done by the legends of the past generations was made to not only be enjoyed but to inspire. My friend adder how music is supposed to be the language we can all understand and it feels rather rude when people try to make it exclusive when there really isn't anythig wron with you understanding, enjoying and using it.

@potatowellcox88706 жыл бұрын
RJ Salinas Well the reason why is because in America white people basically stole from all cultures and claimed it as their own. They also were very ignorant towards other cultures when giving props to those cultures. Like a white person would wear a dumb looking "Kimono" and be like I'm Chinese today.
@7Mushrooms76 жыл бұрын
I also see POC using stuff from western culture and I don't see anyone complaining about it, nor should they. Or do you want to send everyone to the country they're ancestors are from and make them only use things typical from that place and anything else? This idea of cultural appropriation is ridiculous. Of course that mocking a culture or not giving credit where is due is bad, but if a person wants to dress with oriental motives or listen or produce a certain type of music let them. I see people using clothes with patterns from my culture or using elements of my culture in their art... do you think I get mad? No, I'm flattered. I'm not in possession of the elements of my culture and as long as people respect it, I'm not going to be the "culture appropriation police"... I have other things to do in my life.

Being a legend is subjective, if ScarlettP thinks he's a legend I don't see the problem. I'm not a devoted fan but I can recognise that he's insanely talented and one of the most talented mainstream pop singers/musicians at the moment.

Thanks for posting when I was at church. -_- *i honestly still don’t get what cultural appropriation is. I understand that each culture is their own.*
@jaicbacote34946 жыл бұрын
I knew you would get it! It isn’t cultural appropriation when it comes to Bruno Mars or ppl like him. He’s doing his part by giving credit to the culture. Bruno Mars is an example of HOW to PROPERLY enjoy another culture. Now, when it comes to society as a whole (and a lot of black ppl too)...It prefers to see black culture carried out by non black ppl/racially ambiguous ppl. We have a lot of black ppl who don’t want to see black ppl AND who want to claim non black ppl...even if they aren’t. It is up to us black ppl to remember that and to be sure to promote and uplift our own as well...if we don’t, then we can’t complain about the outcome 🤷🏾♀️ And black ppl, can we please stop equating white acceptance and awards as the highest measure of success? We act like our own acceptance of each other is worthless 😔 cool if others embrace us but, your own ppl loving you should be the best achievement. #EndRant 😂

I respectfully disagree with you in regards to Michael and Prince being original. Both were influenced by James Brown. If you visit Paisley Park, Prince commissioned an artist to create an entire wall with drawings of many artists who influenced him, including Chuck Berry, B.B. King, Carlos Santana, Jimi Hendrix, and many others. Every legend leaves behind a blueprint for others to follow, and each blueprint includes every previous artist's input. Bruno is following those blueprints, and someday others will follow his input from those same blueprints.

You can’t win with this topic. If you’re drawing inspiration from other cultures, it’s cultural appropriation. If you don’t, then people think you’re not cultured, or non appreciative of other cultures. The way I see it, if people like a culture, they get inspired by it, and they integrate into their style, then they give that culture more exposure, which to me is good. It’s a compliment to that culture, for being so awesome and influential. Anything otherwise, like talking trash about the culture, not being open minded about it - that’s just straight up disrespectful. You can call what post Malone said as whatever you like, call it hateful, disrespectful, ignorant, etc. Just stop using this “culture appropriation” as a legit term. It’s a confusing term. If there is such a thing as cultural appropriation, meaning outside culture is getting integrated into everybody’s lives, it’s literally happening all over the world, and you can’t stop it, cuz the world is little by little becoming more fluid/diverse

@BrunosSquirrel6 жыл бұрын
Thank You! In little over 5 minutes you have put words to my thoughts. I haven't said anything during this whole debacle for the very obvious reason of being called out for being biased. But I always appreciate your commentary and I'm always excited for your videos. This just makes me love you more. I'm not black, I'm of indian descent but because I recognize a lot of the discrimination and racism that black people in America have to go through from what I see in my own community, I've always supported and tried to spread the message of equality. Lately, though, I feel like a small but loud group is taking this movement way too far, to a point that it is not even about racism anymore. I get the concept of cultural appropriation, but this is just trashing someone for no reason. This group is ruining the image of the black people and the fight for justice. Trivial things like this that get blown out of proportion distract from the real issues and destroy the very ideal that most are fighting for: equality. It is hurtful to the goal of coming together and being one, seeing one as equal and working together. Aside from that, they found Bruno to call an appropriator? While he is probably the only non-black artist out there that actually tries to catch the real soul of the music from the good old times by the legends out of appreciation and the wish to share it? And has the talent to back it up? The only wholesome artist out there that always gives credit to the real legends? Unlike other artists that seriously drag the good name of music and make it trashy and sexualized to earn their dollar? People don't even understand what music it is and make millions. Get your self together people.

Thanks for bringing up that if we're going to regard the fact that Bruno Mars is a cultural appropriator because he's simply not black, then we can label people like Tekashi69, Lil' Pump, Post Malone, etc. as culture vultures as well. It just makes me frustrated that they decided to point fingers at Bruno Mars. His music makes up for the fact that he's not black. I find that if the music is good and made to the best of his ability, then what the fuck is the problem? It's appreciation at best.
@themanyphasesofmimi11166 жыл бұрын
trash-chan the problem is that black artists are never appreciated for black music but non black artist are. I love Bruno to bits but as a black person it gets frustrating watching it happen time and time again. Lets give black artist recognition and awards for black music too, thats all.
@Moana_moo4 жыл бұрын
The Many Phases Of Mimi Bruno makes good music that’s why he is awarded even though it’s “black music”. The Weeknd Beyonce and Rihanna are also awarded a lot cause they make good music. Instead of bashing Bruno for “cultural appropriation” better support black artists then. Plus until now i didn’t know Bruno wasn’t black

Funny that they go after a visible poc man but praise people like Justin Timberlake who arguably does the same thing and has disrespected multiple black artist (ex: going against prince’s wishes, Janet Jackson)

Honestly this one was one of the dumbest arguments. The fact that this man has different influences from different cultures doesn’t mean he’s trying to “steal” anything. He always gives credit where it’s due and he’s not being fake or forcing any type of style for the sake of it. He always features different artists and respects the influences.
