Let's peel the skin back on a brand spankin' new Dewalt 20V XR brushless impact to learn, in layman's terms, how new brushless technology works. Explanations on how Pulse Width Modulation allows digital electronics to output analog voltages, what AC frequency the tools run on and some star wars tomfoolery.

Look up "aspect ratio" on your Confuser. You've uploaded a 16 by 9 widescreen video in the 4 by 3 standard format. That's why there are black areas around the entire video.

The Sqoou You should really know what you are talking about before posting things...if this was exported at a 4:3 aspect ratio, the bars would only be on the right and left, not top and bottom. What is more likely the case is exporting at less that 1920x1080 pixels but it is still 16:9.
@JeremyPeters
@JeremyPeters 9 жыл бұрын
The Sqoou You can have a video that's half the size of your thumbnail and still be 16:9. Size has nothing to do with it, it's the relationship between the length of the top and that of the side that determines aspect ratio.

Keep pushing the trades, we need them! Anyway, why are you so into the brushes? Yes, its were the electrons meet the road, but are there any performance impacts. Maybe a demo on the same motor with different brushes?
@drdrums1
@drdrums1 8 жыл бұрын
Unless I missed it, your video title is misleading - you don't go into how brushless motors work here. Rather, you're explaining PWM (and doing it quite well!!!). PWM is applicable equally to brushed motors (as you have shown in other videos). Brushless certainly uses PWM for speed control, but the fundamental difference is brushless motors include electronic commutation via FET (or some other switching transistor type), while brushed motors, true to their name, use brushes for mechanical commutation. But you probably knew that.

Hey Dr. AvE. Thanks for all the great videos you've made. I've learned a lot of machining stuff (I'm one of those electrocity oriented dudes) from your videos, as well as gotten a lot of laughs. So I though I should teach you something as a thanks. 0v is not the same thing as no voltage. If you wrap your head around it I guess you'll understand why. A voltage is always in relation to another electrical potential/voltage. And especially in confuser circuits its important that a '0' is connected to ground/0v and not just "hanging in the air", if you get what I mean.

+AvE Whats your PhD in? I'm materials science coming from a mech e undergrad. I like your parts about "reckoning", I try to teach my students to think about their answers in a similar fashion. They often don't anyways. For instance, I'll craft a problem dealing with diffusion that expects an answer of tens of hours--then I'll often times see answers that exceed the age of the universe, or are so fast that a photon doesn't have time to transverse the entire distance of a proton.

This guy is very knowledgeable (and pretty funny) - but I think his explanation of PWM is off. My understanding is that the signal from a PWM pin is always at 100% of the operating voltage, but by modulating the with of the pulse, the microprocessor can vary the power available to the motor. The whole reason one needs PWM, as opposed to something simple like a rheostat, is that most motors simply won't work once the supply voltage drops below a certain value. So if you try to run an 18 volt motor at 10% power by putting 1.8 volts across it, it just won't turn at all. If you give it a full 18V, but only for 1 out of every 10 µs, it'll run, but only 1/10 as fast/powerfully. I think the display on the o-scope confirms my interpretation of PWM; the multi-meter is confused because it's in AC mode, but it's reading what is actually a digital signal. Again, this guy knows a stink-ton more than I do about materials and manufacturing, so I'm ready to be corrected - but I don't think I'm wrong.
@zyxw12347
@zyxw12347 8 жыл бұрын
+mrrodgersphysics Very close, but there are multiple measurements being taken. The multimeter was in VAC whilst across two of the three motor windings; the reason being, the MOSFETS that control the motor are outputting AC. That "brushless DC" motor is essentially a 3 phase motor with a permanent magnet armature!
@keithjurena9319
@keithjurena9319 8 жыл бұрын
torque is a function of current..pwm for motor control is variable torque as 10% duty cycle is closer to 10% rated torque at stall than 10% of rated voltage. RC electric aircraft have used PWM for motor throttle for a while now. and with brushless and sensorless PM motors. pretty awesome to get 1Hp from a 4 ounce motor running 16 volts at 65 amps..

Close on the PWM. There really are 2 types, the one your talking about (like what arduinos put out) and then there is the RC standard where it goes from 1ms to 2ms and 1.5ms is neutral and 2ms is full forward and 1ms is full backward. Then this repeats every 10-11ms

zyxw12347 Hey, buddy! Was just looking at some older and hilarious AVE videos, and came across your comment! So if it's a three phase motor, I guess it has three windings? Are the windings hooked up in delta format? How many leads come out of the motor? 3, or 6, or? The reason I'm interested, is I need a very small 3 phase motor with 6 leads, which is an even longer story!
