I just made this for the first time and holy cow - I love it! I had some bacon drippings leftover so I used that. I didn't have any actual bacon left, so instead I put in a big handful each of chopped walnuts, thin sliced almonds and orange flavored dried cranberries. The texture and flavor profile is amazing. I really love when I can make healthy food taste fantastic, so thanks for another one John! This one is definitely going in the core rotation for side dishes. 😁👌

I just made this for dinner and it turned out pretty good. The rawness does make it feel light and fresh, despite all the bacon & associated bacon grease in there. Next time I might add a little more vinegar to give it more oomph though. Maybe some dijon as well.

John, My grandmother made the same dish with dandelions adding chopped red onion and garnishing with hard boiled egg slices. Try it and let me know what you think. It was a springtime tradition in our family. My kids loved it so much that my youngest daughter made it in school for "Show and Tell" introducing it to a whole new generation of kids.

Well, you know the videos are soooooo long that people lose their attention span quickly. That 3 or 4 minutes is a killer. *please note sarcasm towards the op* I just sit down and go through my new subscription videos one at a time. For the food ones, I drool...for the funny ones I laugh...for the rest, I learn something. Keep up the good work, Chef.

Thanks, I really enjoyed this. I did find the vinegar level too high and so did a friendly taster, so I diluted by adding lots more sprouts, some more bacon to go with them, and some apple juice. I also think the sugar could be a bit less, but that's a very personal thing, so ... overall, good stuff! But like any good cook, taste taste taste !!! before loosing your fabulousness upon your guests.

My grandmother used to make a salad very similar to this -- fresh veggies from the garden with hot bacon grease as the dressing. I never had raw sprouts before, they look very good. However, I'm surprised you left in all the bacon fat. Might be a good idea to blot out some the grease before making the dressing. Thanks for the idea! :)

Nope, the grease both softens and flavors the greens. Whether Brussels sprouts or spinach.

Yes, I understand that. But a lot of people eat some form of red meat or pork everyday. My point is to cut corners when you can and be mindful of what you're eating. I love Chef John, and I am not criticizing this video. However, it is my opinion that this dish does not need to have so much cholesterol. It has the potential to be much healthier and taste exactly the same.

"Brussels sprouts" is an English name for a Flemish vegetable. "Brussel sprouts" is an American vegetable made up of little heads of cabbage on a stalk. The first time I ever went to Trader Joe's, they were selling _whole stalks,_ with a recipe for roasting the whole thing in an oven!

When I cook bacon I don't normally add any oil to the pan since bacon produces lots of oil naturally once heated. So just lay your bacon down into a pan that's slightly heated and then once it starts to heat up more oil will be extracted and just make sure things don't burn
@EpicUXnl
@EpicUXnl 12 жыл бұрын
Yeah I did heat it before actually. I always do. I always leave the pan to heat up for like half a minute. There was smoke coming from the oil. Another member suggested that the pan may have been too hot.

depending on how you prepare them they can be soft and bitter or crunchy and light. but it really depends on the flavours of your other ingredients, for instance here in belgium (and probably a lot of other countries) we make it with baconpieces (kinda like he did here, but than the sprouts are cooked) and I dont really like it that way. but I really like it in salads!
