In this review we take a look at the Bruynzeel Expression Coloured Pencils, Bruynzeel and Royal Talens are a very under rated company in my opinion, I am sure a lot of this is due to geography but nevertheless, I think you will be pleasantly surprised at the test results I achieved and the art work I was able to create with the Bruynzeel Expression.

The last review of the design range that I done which was the Pastels I believe I commented on that review that I thought 48 was too low a number for a company to be manufacturing artist quality pencils, especially the colored pencils. They could maybe get away with 48 for the watercolor and Pastel Pencils because they are much easier mediums to mix and create other colours and tones with. Anyway they contacted me and told me that they are definitely considering my observation so hopefully they will extend the Design range to 72 at least and they can still provide them in the amazing drawers. I’ve just bought the Watercolor version of them as well to review as subscriber asked me to review them so I can’t wait to try those. But I personally really like Bruynzeel, I just wish they sold larger sets

Great review Harry. Bruynzeel was the very first pencil I bought (watercolor). So haven't watched a review in a while. How is your daughter? I hope well. I keep her and the fam in my prayers. Hi Becky thank you so much for the incredibly kind words. My Dad has been through the mill a bit but he is doing really well at the minute. I think about 6 years ago maybe less he had skin cancer but it was a mark under his eye and it was pretty much removed in a day and that was the end of it. A couple of years ago he then had Bowel Cancer which he had surgery and had a bag fitted but although much tougher and longer on him, the surgery went well and he was good for about 6 or 9 months. Then he was told there was a cancerous tumour close to where they removed his Bowel but there was a major artery very close to it and they couldn’t operate so they suggested Radiotherapy or Chemo, turned out Radio was not precious enough or something like that so they started him on Chemotherapy. He started Chemo at the beginning of the year and he has had a rough time with it but he was told only last week ( mid August 2020) that the Chemo was working and they were able to reduce the level of Chemo which is excellent news. All those amazing prayers to the big man are working and I can’t thank you all enough. Our daughter has had a rough week or so since she was assaulted at the beginning of the month but we are just working through it as so many other families in similar situations have to. Thank you so so much Becky for your concern and kind words. I’ve said it many tines before, the community that has built up on this channel will never truly know the help and good you have all done for me and my family and I just wish I was able to show my appreciation properly.

Thanks for your tutorial have seen this brand before didn't know nothing about it please tell your daughter that she is beautiful God love her and has a plan for her life. I don't know if you are a Christian but God gave your daughter to you as a gift she is a treasure that can never be replace. You sound like a wonderful father and she is bless to have you in her life as a parent myself we something may feel helpless at time with our kids because we cannot stop them from getting or feeling hurt but as Christian we have a heavenly father God that know how we feel and he will leads us and guide us through the hard times in our life so lean on God he will never fail you.Once again thanks for be a loving parent God bless

Hi Harry, I'm late but thank you for the reviews. Could you please let me know how these colored pencils feel, compared to the Bryunzeel Design series (which does 48 colored pencils only)? I mean, does the leads go down the same way, like a mix of wax & oil feeling? I've already had the Design line for many years, so I am wondering if buying these ones to implement the colour range, but if they weren't similar enough I would not use them together at the same time in a drawing 🤔 Also I am happy Amelia is better now, I remember that terrible months your family spent because of the bullies. I love my Bruynzeel Design 48 , the color payout is wonderful but they are so crumbly. I feel as though I’m sharpening them a lot. This looks like the same color payout but 72 vs 48. Thanks for the review. 😘🙏 Please ask your daughter to hold close those who love her and those she love. It’s very hard when you let others opinions in, especially when you’re young. So many KZbinrs have compassionate subscribers. We really are a decent community of people. We care about others joys and pain, with love and respect.

Hi Dee thank you so much for your lovely comment I really appreciate it. I will be doing a comparison review of all my Bruynzeel pencils including the Design so I will put them through the test and see what the results are. Also when I completed my review of the Design Pastels, after reviewing the Design Coloured Pencils and Watercolour Pencils, I spoke to Royal Talens and said to them I felt 48 was too low a set size for their artist pencils to which they took on board and said they are definitely considering extending the range. I don’t think it was so much to do with my recommendation but more to do with the comments from you guys on the video where I mentioned 48 being too low. I think they could see a lot of people agreed.

The Art Gear Guide Your description of the slightly flexible ”wood” barrel of the pencil, reminds me of the Staedtler Ergosoft pencils. The Ergosofts are triangular, but fit and sharpen like round pencils in the average handheld sharpener. Perhaps Bryunzeel and Staedtler are using the same ”wood” material for the pencil barrels.

In some countries you can buy them per unit , for example here in Peru there is a store who sells Bruynzell, Carandache and Dewent by unit, but they are expensive. It is more common and cheaper to find Faber Castell by unit

I can see how the lack of colour name would be a problem with artists who have limited colour vision, but I am glad they at least put a colour number on. If a pencil doesn't have a name or number that is pretty much a deal breaker for me because I like to swatch my pencils and I need a way to tell them apart. Having had to number 3 sets of watercolour markers which were 100-120 in each was a nightmare and not one I am prepared to do again!!! 2 of the sets I bought came in only 2 days apart and my poor fingers had had it from labeling all those markers before I could swatch them out properly!!! NOT doing that again!!! I don't see what the big deal is with putting a name or number on the markers/pencils!!! It is SO much easier for the artist as most of us have more than one set or will eventually!!! I am an art supply hoarder.... excuse me, collector, so I need to be able to tell my markers apart especially as the end caps are very often not even close to the ink colour!!! I really wish the art supply companies would listen to us about this as it can be a very big deal to many of us!!!

Romin Saini no, on monday. I already had the 12 set & really liked them in my sketchbook. So did some commission work and bought the 72 set for 35€ (which means 0,5€ per pencil).

Of course I will I think that is an excellent request, I’ll order a set now but it might be a week or so before I actually get the review uploaded as I have a few other products to review before. I personally love the Bruynzeel brand, I think they are very under rated, my only criticism of them, and it isn’t even a criticism really, is that they need to provide larger sets. They make such fantastic pencils but then only provide 48 of them or at a push 72 if we are lucky. Anyway thank you so much for your request and look out for the review.

I bet those are like the bic graphite school/writing pencils, we have in the US, with that weird feel. I think the bics are actually a wood composite, maybe the brunzeels are too, that would explain the plasticky feel.

Hi Dawn thank you so much for asking, my Dad is actually just last week been told that the chemo is working and that they are able to reduce his dose which is excellent. Amelia is up and down but getting there, we have some amazing people around us helping her, but she will get there I am sure of it. The thing I struggled with a still do really is portraitures. I’d love to master portraiture but I just can’t get the level I would like to.

Hi, Does Bruynzeel Design have lightfast information. I have found open stock in Canada and in the States. Finally how does Bruynzeel design compare to Marco Renoir. They appear similar in look? Thank you in advance.

I have tried for years to get Lightfast information from Bruynzeel but have never actually received it. On their products they simply state that they are lightfast but as a reviewer I am not personally satisfied with that, I want to know which system they have used ie Blue Wool or ASTM and what the individual pigments are rated. With regards to the comparison, that is an excellent comparison you came up with. I never thought of the Renoir against these. I personally think that the Renoir have a softer core than the Bruynzeel but I think the pigment strength in the Bruynzeel is a little bit stronger.

@@TheArtGearGuide Hi, Thanks for your response. I am in the process of reviewing and organizing my pencils. Until now I have gotten singles, and some sets, such as 12 Premier, M Renoir 24, Luminance 20, Pablo 30, Coloursoft 36, Small set Inktense 12, Polychromos 12. I grew up with Scholar Prisma and Laurentians. Eventually I would like to have a good set of "oil" based and wax based pencils - at least 48 or more colors. I love Luminance, Premiers are good to use and I can build gradually. As you mentioned a good lightfast set of pencils would be great to have as I develop drawing skills even on a small scale. Artists love all those options. Trying to decide if the price difference between Bruynzeel D and MR is worth it as I can get 100 MR for 60-70 CAD and Bruynzeel D 48set is 101 CAD. The advantage is that Bruynzeel has singles and MR does not at least in Canada. Do you know if Bruynzeel and MR sharpen similarly? Thanks for all your reviews, they are very helpful. M:)

The barrel:not cedar wood but cherry tree wood. 30€ for 72p. here in Belgium. Price-quality we dutch speaking people know there's no better brand. And all made in China, but hey they make i-phones out there and many find those "premium". ??? Just saying, you can be certain that even in China they make great colored pencils👍 No open stock's needed: Just buy a new 72 set and no need to be afraid to sharpen to often and top much😂 great for details and fine lines and they even blend well. Even with paint thinner. lightfastness: Who cares at 30€ for 72set?! Wanna play the pro? We dutch speaking people just buy "The Royal Talens Van Gogh" 60 set. faster than light🤩 for only 60€ for the 60p. set. Of you can' t live with only 60 colors... Time to get better in blending, it makes artists!. ( it's just my opinion)

Hi Romin thank you so much for your very kind words and I am so pleased you enjoy the channel. With regards to the pencils, I do try to give lots of the sets away to you guys who follow the channel. To date I’ve given a lot of pencil sets away but I have not done one recently, I will have to go through the sets and do a few more giveaways. The biggest problem with doing giveaways now is, when I do reviews now I create some art work to help demonstrate the pencils but the problem with doing this is that some of the pencils can end up being used quite a bit, whereas before I added art work with the reviews I only done swatches and some tests leaving pretty much full sets and I would give those away. I don’t like the idea of giving away sets half used. We also have a women’s refuge close to us that my wife told me about and I send sets of art supplies and adult colouring books and kids colouring books to the center as some of the ladies have young and teenage children with them. When my wife first suggested it to me I thought it was a terrible idea because of what these poor women had been through, I thought, how are art supplies going to help these women, but I was thankfully wrong, which I often am. The women loved them and their kids as well. I personally have never seen the place or been there, my wife and youngest daughter take the stuff to them because being a man I never want to make any of the women feel uncomfortable and unfortunately the women are in these places because of some gutless useless excuse for a man. I’m sorry, I was brought up with my Dad telling me if I ever so much as raised my hand to hit a women, I would hope the police got me first because he would be furious with me and I’ve brought my son up the same way. Hi Rana my friend, thank you so much for your lovely words and message to Amelia. She is 15 coming 16 this October and suffered 3 years of bullying at school. She has got proper help other than my wife and I so she is making small step progress. You are absolutely right about what you have said, even before Amelia was bullied I would hate hearing one of my wife’s friends crying because she thought she wasn’t pretty. I think there is far too much pressure put on young girls and women they are expected by society to be like certain celebrities and it is just crazy. I have three kids, two daughters Niamh 20 and Amelia almost 16 and my son Jude 17, from day one of them being born my wife and I tell them every single day we love them and they are beautiful. Even now my eldest daughter lives away from home now but I text her every morning to tell her I love and miss her and that she is wonderful and text her every night just to say good night. I drive them all nuts but if I die tomorrow they will never doubt that I love them more than life.

f.j _fatima if you click on the link in the description for the Written Review I talk about the Lightfast information on there. It is the same with the prices, I don’t mention them on the video review because they can change so frequently and on the written review I can amend that as soon as a new price is set. Lightfast information is a little bit the same but doesn’t change anywhere near as frequently. Some companies change the ingredients in their pencils, Arteza have recently done this as have Derwent with a few of their products, when this happens the Lightfast I for can change and so again if that happens I can change the information on my website. I know it is a bit inconvenient having to jump about from video to written review, but I try to make sure that all the information on my reviews is as relevant as I can keep them and once a video is made there is very little changes that can be made, but on my website I have much more control. I am sorry about this and hope that it hasn’t caused you too much inconvenience, I hope you will continue to check out The Art Gear Guide videos and if there is anything else I can do for you please just let me know.

Harry, it breaks my heart to hear what Amelia has been going through. There is a lot of ugliness in the world but there is still a lot of beauty too. Tell Amelia my granddaughter and I are praying for her daily. Tell her she is a beautiful child of God and He loves her so much. She is beautiful to her family and friends and they love her. But what she might not know is that there are thousands of people around the world that think she is beauriful. Many are subscribers on your channel. WE are all children of God, or the Higher Power, Creator of all things, and we think she is beautiful and love her. She is loved so much. Loved far more than the ugly darkness in the world. Our Lord and Savior Jesis Christ said " Love others as I have loved you" So if anyone asked how can you love someone you don't know and you've never seen, You love with the love of Jesus Christ in your heart.
