You definitely need to watch The Sopranos to understand how BB came to be. BB is in fact a very excellent tribute to Sopranos in a way that Gilligan took notes from Chase's work but created something very visceral and personal out of it. Tony Soprano and Walter White would be the best of buddies if they crossed paths. Until of course, each of them starts plotting to kill the other.

I think Tony would want to like him but Walt is far too much of a threat. Tony may control an entire family and numerous different criminal enterprises, but Walt is far more intelligent and calculating than even Tony. If Tony didn't spot that early, Walt would end up either owning North Jersey crime or be on every family hit list from New York to Naples.

Breaking Bad and The Sopranos have thematic similarities but their strengths are entirely different. Breaking Bad is much more tightly plotted and continues to up the ante and keep the audience moving forward along with it. It’s a show that is geared toward streaming. The sopranos, despite starting out as just sort of a mob show, ends up a deep character study that doesn’t mind taking its time to explore little nooks and crannies of its world. It’s plot, outside of the last few episodes, isn’t there because there’s not really a plot to life. We don’t notice the things we should be worrying about until it’s too late, and spend too much time obsessing over things that don’t matter. As a result the sopranos doesn’t lend itself to streaming the same way breaking bad does. However, it’s much more rewatchable than most of its more plot driven peers as a result. I think the better comparison for the sopranos would be the Americans which starts as a pulpy spy show and then moved on to being an often slow moving meditation on loyalty, nationalism, and family and their competition within characters

The dream sequences are the most accurate representation of a Dream I have seen to date in tv. When he was walking (but not moving) by the peer silvio says something n just slides off view while tony still stationary walks, then laughs to himself😂. Well, this explains why people probably rooted for Henry Hill in Goodfellas. Despite the face that he was a despicable man who did despicable things, he was relatable when he talked about being more than an average nobody, plus he did seem disturbed when his colleagues committed senseless acts of violence, which brought out even more of the humanity in him.

@benjaminberman6200
@benjaminberman6200 2 жыл бұрын
I think of Breaking Bad and The Sopranos mirrors of each other. When we look at Tony Soprano from afar, he seems like a man whose concerns and lifestyle aspects are so different than the common man, we almost consider him a different breed of human. Then as the show progresses we learn that this man essentially, like Bryan said, actually goes through many of the same kinds of worries and troubles that characterize the life of a regular suburban family in NJ. And that’s jarring because it means that human beings deep down have this ability to become numb to real evil and perpetrate it themselves. He’s not really different fundamentally from humanity. Viewing Walt helps us arrive at the same conclusion but from the opposite starting point. Walt is a nobody, he represents millions of people who live anonymous and unremarkable lives. Walts challenges are his mortgage and his low paying job, and his failing health. Sure we know Walt is smart and the world has not fully appreciated him. So he has an ego, but he’s really very regular. Then as the series progresses we realize that Walt’s ego is actually so big and his desire for recognition is so unrelenting that he is willing to steal, murder, and whatever else it takes to be “on top”. Walt starts to think in ways we thought were reserved for people like Tony, only we knew Walt when we thought people like Tony were ‘animals’.

"We lost some of the humor as the seasons go on because it's too horrific to witness" don't wanna start a cringe internet debate but The Sopranos got arguably more horrific (not in terms of human cost in the show's universe, but in terms of revealing the depths and depravity of the human psyche) and the humor stayed. But the humor was different. Walter being trampled on by literally everyone in his life and oddball methheads aren't laugh-out-loud funny in the way the malapropisms and absurdity and skewering of mob culture and lack of self awareness was in The Sopranos. If BB had more humor when Walt was cringe and he put on that dumb hat and said things like "I am a God, Bow Down Before Me" BB would be a better show.

Sopranos set the bar high, Breaking Bad took it to the next level. To enjoy both, one should first start with The Sopranos and then watch Breaking Bad. Sopranos may seem a little dull after watching Breaking Bad, but Sopranos also was a great show without a doubt. Breaking Bad is just so filmic than TV-esque, Sopranos was more TV audience oriented. All, great shows should be greatly indebted to Twin Peaks which actually was the one which started it all, and made TV a respectable medium.

Sopranos wasn't made to be watched as quickly as BB, each episode talked about a different thing but still drove the whole plot of the season. Where in comparison to BB it felt like a one continuous show because each episode progressed from the last. Sopranos you could watch episode Pine Barrens and then College and you would get it. You cant skip episodes in BB. Which is why it gave it this kind of exciting momentum. That was never meant in the Sopranos so of course it could be dull as you said it but it definitely had better writing for sure.

The Sopranos may have paved the way just like other shows paved the way for the Sopranos. BB was obviously much more original than the Sopranos. The mob genre is so overrated and overdone that it’s nauseating. The Irishman was the final nail in the coffin. What a sorry excuse for a movie.

If you like Sci-fi/cartoons that much i suggest you watch Adventure Time (season 4-8), Gravity Falls, Over The Garden Wall. Walter White would never go to a psychiatrist. It would be completely against character. For one thing, he didn't think there was anything wrong with him. He was too narcissistic to entertain the idea that consulting someone else might help him. Second, his whole psychological motivation was about proving himself, about being 'a real man' who can take care of things, protect and provide for his family, measure up to any adversary, etc. Guys like that don't go to shrinks.

@@WalterLiddy Tony had the exact same thing, it was constantly in the show. Gary Cooper The Strong Silent Type less complaining more being a man's man. After coming out of the hospital from gunshot wounds he kicked the shit out of his big muscled body guard to prove for the rest he's tough and still got it. He was narcissistic when choosing who does certain jobs, like giving Bobby a contract to kill in the last season because Bobby beat him up earlier. He told Johnny Sack when he was just made boss to go fuck himself and wouldn't give his cousin Blundetto to him out of pride. The similarities between Tony and Walt is uncanny and you could understand why Bryan Cranston and Vince Gilligan always talked about The Sopranos as an inspiration.

If we consider the timeline of both stories, Walter H.White was pretty much a fresher in the criminal world, even if he became a top player, so he did not even have the time to reflect properly on his own steps and choices, everything was so new for him, and so fast and exciting, and his criminal ride last for maybe less than 2 years. On the other hand, Tony Soprano was born in a criminal environment, inside a criminal family with his own father being a mob boss, so he had a much longer time to realise and feel the consequences of such a lifestyle, and he tried to take some countermeasures to certain issues. Thus to visit a therapist for Walter was kind of premature thing.
