90s comedians approached comedy so seriously and that's why it was so good! Like the early Simpsons, all jokes went through like 20 revisions by 20 Harvard graduates in that show. And it still shows!

Comedy has not only a purpose of being funny. With comedy you reveal things that are kind of tabu normally. Also you can set certain social norms. It is more complicated that just few laughs. That is what the genius of Larry and Jerry is. They influenced the society in so many ways we can not even imagine.
