A guy I was once dating said to me once (after hearing me play Roxy constantly) that he had never heard a singer sing so clearly, that the lyrics were so strongly in the front of the song. I hadn't noticed it before, but I have always been a vocals person. I LOVE the whole band, but Ferry's up front and amazing lyrics were what pulled me in initially.
@journey41093 жыл бұрын
I guess soundstage, melody are more important.. Vocal is just a voice, addition to composition.
@mesolithicman1643 жыл бұрын
Philip242 To differ slightly. Vocals humanise a piece of music. Yes, on one level they offer another layer of melody but minus the vocals all you have is a backing track. Add vocals and you have human communication.

At the Roxy reunion press conference in 2001, Ferry was told that Tom Ford of Gucci considered Bryan his all time style icon. When asked what the look of the band would be, Bryan raised his eyebrows and said "Gucci of course" to much laughter.

We can all agree that Bryan is a genious. But one thing I do love to recall about Roxy Music is their golden artistic groovie aura. When you listen to them, it's almost like you're in the middle of a nightclub, facing drags, hookers, performers and rockers altogether, digging into whatever was going on in the 70s Roxy Music gives me that "outcasts only" territory.

I was in High School in the early 70's. crazy bisexual boyfriend. we went to see RM at the Hollywood Palladium. the boyfriend disappeared at some point during the night. 2 freshly returned Marines (end of the Viet Nam war), probably suffering from PTSD got me drunk in the back a little too forcefully. I wrested myself away, and ended up in front of the bandstand, watching Bryan Ferry in his beautiful powder blue tux.

@PAULLONDEN8 жыл бұрын
The reason he had to go...there can only be one star on stage....Don't think though that Brian was "frantically waving for attention"...he was just totally absorbed by this great band he was in, and forgot about the intricasies of inter band politics....Eventually it turned out for the best, as he's got maybe an even bigger career than Ferry...or the other Roxy members for that matter....

Sadly, Roxy Music have only had ONE top 40 hit here in America, making them technically an American one hit wonder. That song is 1975’s “Love is the Drug”, which peaked at No. 30 in 1976. They only had two other Billboard Hot 100 Chart entries: 1979’s “Dance Away” (No. 44) and 1980’s “Over You” (No. 80)

They became "dull"? Avalon is "dull"? One of the best records ever. New sound and change of direction. And the first album and "For your pleasure" are both milestones.
@jaysimoes37056 ай бұрын
@@joe22589 Taste you know. I think the same thing: when Brian went and Bryan got in control the thing spiraled out of it. Slowly. The first album after ENO left (I think it is nr 3) was also excellent. But come by the end of the 70s to my mind it was boring. Which is the difference with Bowie I guess. Bowie had a shaky start, but continued to reinvent himself well into the 80s. Roxy started of like a rocket that slowly crashed to the ground.

I like Brian Ferry and Roxy Music, but I must say, even in the early 1970's, they looked like middle-aged men.
@PAULLONDEN8 жыл бұрын
"Middle age" means 40 to 50........they hardly looked that... but indeed, they didn't look like Sweet, as Ferry and his cohorts where approaching 30; which they didn't try to hide, as they grew up on 50's rock'n roll.....
@wiseonwords7 жыл бұрын
patriot sons of liberty -- "they looked like middle-aged men." What complete and utter Bollocks! What a supremely dumb comment from you, mate! Dumber than dumb! RM looked like no other band at the time -- they looked like they'd stepped out of some fantastic artistic version of the future.
@tonysharples62337 жыл бұрын
Middle age to me is 100 to 200. So at 65 I'm a youngster, as I'm watching this, 25 in my head, because Roxy were totally unique, and with Zep and The Ash, the top 3 UK 70's bands. For Your Pleasure is a masterpiece.

I think Bowie never reached this kind of level, certainly not his lyrics. But Bowie remained interesting a whole lot longer, to me, than Roxy or Ferry did. I like Bowie a whole whole lot, but the first three albums of Roxy are just of another level. Ladytron, Mother of Pearl, If there is something...Wow.

40 minutes of Brian Ferry's ego sucking all the oxygen out of the room? He arguably was the *least* interesting member of Roxy Music.

Interesting theory, guy. Of course every band member was great. But: who wrote the songs?
