new to having these, technically i have 2 seneguls and 1 dragonfish? style. bought tank and them off someone that needed to get rid of em they told me flake food. i got the tank for my 2 blue channel catfish so i added all the fish (2 cat, 2 sens, dragon, 2 pleco ) i threw in feeder rosy red about 20 of em last night for the cats, i was shocked to see em all gone so i did some research came across your video and realized they prolly ate them also lol good video i hope my light sand doesn't take from the dragonfish... he's black with yellow spots. luckily my pleco's stay away i hope for now... i also have 5 mystery snails and plenty of cover for all the fish and lots of plants bushy thin thick and tall ones for cover also! made lids last night out of small thin like paneling but no design i flex sealed it and they stay decent but this is my third day of learning i hope all goes well thanks for the vid!

Thanks for watching!! And yes your bichir probably ate all of them at night haha… bichirs don’t really eat flake food unless it’s in a huge pile or something. Try sinking pellets. And watch out for that pleco, I’ve heard horror stories of plecos attacking bichirs for their slime coat

@@BryanLa thanks for the reply! when i got the tank the woman had them in it.... but since reading i seen that. i am keeping an eye on em. and realized i had 4 bichir total. 2 light color almost albino a silver one and my black with yellow or gold spots i love that one! i was more worried when i got them over the blue catfish but they stay in their hides. the suckers i feed them pellets and they stay on the sides or away from them and ever since i seen your vid on that they aren't good housemates i have kept an eye i wish i had another tank to throw them in but i will see i have a 29 to throw them in once i get it set up just not sure... i have 6 mystery snails and good filtration plus the mysteries just had babies 2 clutches of them so i will have plenty soon enough! thanks again for the feed back!

Definitely a subscriber! Thanks for this, I have 5 bichirs, and 2 ropes co existing great, I have two platinum babies waiting to be released when older. Can’t wait for that day! I too have lost a del from loose lids, I like to buy two of each for a “pair” but my other del lost his partner 😢 I don’t take lid locking down lightly now! I’m trying to soften my water but always seems to be maxed out general hardness.. I use almond leaves, some moss stuff you add to canister filters. I have had spider wood galore and I’ve done water changes with 40-50% water changed and then added 30-40gs of distilled water! Which I tested and was 100% completely soft water. Tested it the main tank and it still was showing hardest on the chart. I don’t get it.. I am trying very hard to soften my water but can’t seem to change it, I use prime chemicals, I was using the “API”? brand I think it’s called but it wasn’t doing it either! Idk anyways great video and absolutely beautiful specimens 😍

Hey mate, have you hurd or seen a polypterus catching a small schooling fish like a cardinal tetra? I've kept them over 10 years ago and mine were slow passive eaters. Anyway, my point is, 6 tetra are down to 3. I'm not crying about their loss but didn't think the senegalus was slick enough catch them. My worry is I see no bodies and I'm hoping they have been eaten and not decaying somone and being a potential amonia spiker.

What's your two cents i have a 12 inch pleco that I have had for many years in my 135gl with 4 fancy goldfish. People warn that the pleco will attack the gold fish but it has never touched them. And shows no interest in them at all it only eats green beans cucumbers and maybe some gold fish pellets if it beats the gold fish to them. Now again people warn about these fish and plecos for the same reason but honestly I don't think my pleco would hurt them think I would be safe to add 2 of them to my tank? I'm going to just go to petsmart and get them from there so they are just one solid color I think they are a smaller breed of them. Still researching and asking questions. Thanks for your advice.

i once had a young pleco that destroyed one of my prized Ranchus overnight. Literally only took one night to strip all of my Ranchu's scales off its body and i come out to a tank full of gold looking coins floating everywhere. Because of this incident, I do not keep plecos with goldfish or my Bichirs.

@BryanLa
@BryanLa 4 жыл бұрын
Hi, I've heard great things about feeding beef heart to young bichirs for fast growth, Although I've personally never used beef heart for my Bichirs, its always the 'powerfeeding' food I come across in the fourms. for baby Bichirs I would feed chopped up Tilapia filets and Frozen market shrimp just because its soft food, usually fresh, and it seems like all of the baby bichirs I've raised in the past love it. you technically could feed pellets to them at a young age (bichirs literally eat anything, so training is usually not necessary). But when they're young, I like feeding the fresh stuff just because I know it would be a lot easier to clean up compared to uneaten pellets that can become soggy over time and be a headache to clean up

sick video - just subbed because of it - quick question is my polleni cichlid going to do well with a bichir? - I am thinking of adding one - same with a couple clown loaches?
@BryanLa
@BryanLa 3 жыл бұрын
Hi, I personally haven't kept a polleni, but I wouldn't add fish that are super aggressive eaters. My bichirs take their sweet time to eat, so if I had an aggressive eating cichlid it would outcompete them for food. You could feed at night but I like watching my bichirs eat. Everything is trial and error so you can definitely try that combo. I've had friends that kept bichirs with flowerhorns and they didn't have a problem, and flowerhorns are pretty aggressive. As for the Clown loach, It has barbs so it should be able to defend itself. The only problem I would see is if the Clown loach gets stuck in the bichirs mouth 😅

Floating issues usually happen with Swim Bladder disease.. but im not sure if Bichirs actually have swim bladders. Swim bladder problems are usually always caused by diet. If you’re only feeding pellet supplemented with some meaty foods then up the meaty foods and reduce the pellets. Just keep an eye on your water quality and increase your water changes until your filtration has has a chance to catch up. Hope that helps!

@BryanLa
@BryanLa 3 жыл бұрын
I would be more worried about it getting bullied and beat to death. 2 bichirs with that much of a size difference has a high chance of one bullying the other and stressing it out, especially ornate being known for its aggression. I would maybe wait till you can get one that's closer to the size of your bigger bichir. Odds if being eaten would probably be 4/10.

@BryanLa
@BryanLa 3 ай бұрын
@@akanescott4405 in my experience, Bichirs are sensitive to movements and noise around the tank. opening lids and loudly walking around the aquarium. when they get scared they bolt in a random direction. in my case, I used to have wood in the tank but they would smash into it and often damage their snout. i now only use light/small pieces of wood and plants as decor.

Moist food is bad for bichirs cuz it migth sufficate them becouse moist food develops a i forgot the word but it basicly develops stuff that stays on the very top of water like skin that can sufficate them then they inchale itl go inside there lung and keep them from ichaling and exchaling
@BryanLa
@BryanLa 4 жыл бұрын
I think what you're referring to is biofilm at the surface of the water. Usually this happens with oily food like salmon, anchovy, and sometimes those pre-packaged silversides from petco. And you're correct, the bio film can negatively affect bichirs when they come up for air, but Its not 'moist' food that develops this. Usually air stones and filtration breaks up the biofilm from oily foods.

Yup no worries! I'm glad you brought this up though. Biofilm exposure and air breathing fish is definitely something I should have brought up in the video.
