It's hard to believe that I went to the same university where he made his mark, The University of Alabama. When I was in school there, his name was everywhere, so in that sense it was easy to remember that he had been there. But until I see something like this speech or watch highlights of some of those great seasons he had, I don't truly appreciate how we walked the same ground on that campus. ROLL TIDE ROLL!!

This was Bear Bryant at his coaching best! This wasn't from the 1970s dynasty, when he had his pick of the best players all across the nation. These were the early years of rebuilding Alabama football back into the program that he himself had won national championships with as a player for Frank Thomas in the 1930s. These were the undermanned, undersized, lilly White Alabama teams. This was when he took little, slow, weak country boys and turned them into killers by convincing them they could beat anybody based purely on his mastery of motivation. As Kenny Stabler said, "The opponents were always bigger, stronger, faster, and there were more of them, but we always won." This was a younger Coach Bryant at his coaching apex!

I was in the state in the USAF in 1966-67. There was no talking to Tide fans if you were not all in, too! The Bear had a weekly TV show where he was lamenting a bad year once when his team went 8-2. A “bad year.” He said after a loss once,”We couldn’t have beaten a barber college.” Great lines!

Sorry, weswsp01, I was in grad school at FSU in 1993, and I remember how FSU got that first championship: after they lost to Notre Dame, they CRIED on TV (literally; that's not the kind of thing I would make up) and BEGGED the voters not to drop them too much in the polls. It worked. Notre Dame lost the next week, but they didn't cry or beg and were dropped out of contention. FSU got the trophy, but they had to give up their man cards to do it.
