You have to hand it to Angel for being completely aware that he's universally accepted as the worst ump in the history of professional baseball, and yet continuing to show up every game out of sheer spite. I mean, the MLB won a lawsuit that allows them to publicly say that they won't let him ump a series game because he's a terrible ump. The man is LEGALLY KNOWN as a shit ump in official court documents and he still shows up. If I had as much hate in my whole body as Angel has in one pinky finger just getting out of bed each morning, I'd either be the president or a serial killer.

As a former NCAA umpire I can’t stand complacency! Guys like Angel Hernandez know they are essentially untouchable due to the collective bargaining agreement and the elite “ cliqueish “ atmosphere among the MLB umpire membership. He will never be held accountable for his poor calls ( especially regarding the strike zone), nor his standoffish attitude toward MLB players and managers. I mean you’re right ultimately there isn’t. The union protects them. Unfortunately the standards that they set are too low. So Angel still makes slightly above or at minimum every season. The only thing they can really do it withhold good post season assignments from him. Which they have done mostly. He’s a terrible umpire and they know it. I’ve even heard he’s not great to be on a crew with. A lot of other umpires refused to have him on their crews and it was usually the most sr crew chief getting him to keep him in line but to no avail. Sure he’ll get told he was wrong by his supervisors but that’s about it. Listen I’ve met him personally and he’s a really nice guy but he’s a terrible umpire and the only reason he was really even given a job was because of quotas they had to fill.

I'm an outsider, who watches highlights of games and knows only a little about MLB. But one thing I've seen a lot of is people complaining about this umpire Angel Hernandez. Many of the comments I've seen call him bad and accusing him of being unprofessional. Some even go so far as to accusing him of being corrupt. So the question I have is this - How can someone who officiates at what is seen to be the highest level of this sport be so universally disliked and not respected, and still have a job? I cannot think of any other sport where a match/game official has so many fans all saying the same bad things about him, and yet the sport's own governing body doesn't appear to have any concerns about doing anything about it? Is MLB deliberately ignoring its fans on this subject? Or are they just chalking this up to a bunch of unhappy fans and nothing more needs to be done? I mean it's not just fans of one team that have issues with Hernandez from what I have seen. There are a lot of people who follow different MLB teams and there are a lot who've taken issue with this person? Can someone please explain this to me because I'm genuinely intrigued to know about this.

I think it's important to note here that check swings are judgement calls. It's up to the umpire to determine whether it was a full swing or not with no real criteria that can be looked at in slow motion other than judging intent. With that said, consistency is all players ask for and the inconsistent calls on what looks like identical swings in the same at-bat is the issue. His lack of consistency along with egregious strike zones are what makes him terrible, we had better strike zones and consistency in high school baseball 10 years ago. If you want more data on how bad he is, google umpire scorecards and go through the data on that website. The website does show that he's in fact consistent in one way, being terrible. It doesn't answer the why, but it does show just how terrible he always is.

My guess, as a former umpire is that it is a combination of not seeing it correct and maybe more importantly, not going with the gut feeling, or not knowing how to tap into that feeling. A lot of calls happen super fast, and I was umpiring teenagers 😅

@rorycolgan nope. They couldn't fire him if they wanted to. They had to go to court just to make sure he didn't umpire playoff games. Trust me they'd dump him if it was in the cards

I was there last night and the stadium was relentless. Later on when Angel called another check swing “safe,” the crowd sarcastically cheered.
