I read the book after seeing the movie, and honestly I think Suzanne Collins nailed the inner monologue of a narcissist justifying the horrible things they do. It was chilling how little Snow questioned himself when it dawned on him that Lucy Gray's death would make it possible for him to go back to his old life.

It really showed at the end of Mockingjay when they had their final conversation about how he didn't bomb the children. Katniss knew snow had no issue killing kids but not without a reason. I know it's kinda left up in the air because of how he acted after katniss shot coin, and he could've been manipulating her but idk if there's a point in the books or movies that snow ever actually lied to her. Manipulated yes but lied 🤷.

You know, you saying that Snow and Katniss were actually a lot alike really hit me, because I had never considered that. They absolutely HAD been in survivor mode all their lives, and here is a girl who is obviously brave enough to step up and take her little sister's place in the games, who is audacious enough to shoot an arrow AT THE GAMEMAKERS, and rebellious enough to threaten to leave the Games without ANY victor; I'm sure he saw a lot of his own qualities in Katniss...and THAT is what made him view her as a dangerous enemy! Obviously, the whole Lucy Gray angle of the prequel had something to do with it too, but even more than her part in his past was just his own existence.

Fun fact: the idea of abundant feasts (aka shameful act of gluttony) with the liquid to be able to keep eating well past being full was originally inspired by Ancient Greek elite feasts who did the same thing (this is just based on what I learned in high school. I’m not sure if it’s true or how much of it is true). Collins’ influence and inspiration from ancient times can be found in every nook and cranny of the Hunger Games series.

And you have every right to correct mine. But there’s a way to go about it. In my area of expertise, I hear ALL the time about how the Queen Mary in Long Beach, California was in trouble of sinking due to great disrepair. This is distressing to me and damaging to ship’s reputation because I have plenty of evidence to prove this isn’t true. But many people who have heard this and believe it don’t deserve average Redditor scrutiny from me about it. Simply to be informed. They’re not hungry for the knowledge and aren’t inclined to do more research. I could yell at them about not doing their research. But thats not very helpful for them. And that’s what communication is all about. Humans are full of errors. Oh. That’s right. I’m human. Doesn’t that help me to empathize with my fellow person rather than grow some haughty superiority complex? If they see how, actually, the Queen Mary’s hull has been in very good shape and the reasons for it, perhaps they can be…enlightened instead of torn down. (Sigh) I disagree that Collins wrote Snow as someone whose statements Katniss could believe - or that he was known as a trustworthy (if evil) person. Everything about Snow is ruthless and manipulative - so there’d be no reason to think he WOULDN’T exploit someone’s reliance on the veracity of his words. Snow doesn’t lie for two reasons: First, he has Katniss between a rock and a hard place. He doesn’t NEED to lie - nothing would be served by it. Rather, Snow would benefit more by being clear, direct and unequivocal: ensuring Katniss understood his wishes and the ramifications of failing to comply. Second, being able to speak openly and honestly - and to threaten someone without fear of repercussions - is the ultimate display of power and confidence. Such a display would reinforce to Katniss how strong and secure Snow was in his capacity and ability to control others. Lying to Katniss would be to expose weakness - which is the very last thing he wants to do. As an aside: You seem to have missed an element of the naming conventions in the districts: People tend to be named after THINGS versus their inherent traits - akin to how the Capitol views them as non-human entities. The district folk know their only value to the Capitol is in the products and gratuitious entertainment they provide - that’s literally how the Capitol views them: Lumber. Coal. Produce. Meat. Fish. Grain. Tech items. Luxury goods. Etc. So rather than naming children based on the positive attributes one hopes they’ll have (like strength, loyalty, grace, wisdom) they’re named in keeping with the only value that has any meaning in their world: (1) as an item (Peeta, Cashmere, Clove), as an element of an item (Gloss, Glimmer, Blight, Chaff), as a means of procuring an item (Thresh, Seeder) - or (2) as an element of superhuman strength and violence (Brutus, Marvel, Enobaria).

Because the movie lacks Snow's internal monologue from the book, most of his actions lack context and we are seeing him from the perspective of the outside observer, where in the book we are seeing everything from his perspective. This is intentional and was by the request of the author; That way we can attain two perspectives and if you haven't read the book or watched the movie, I strongly recommend watching the movie first, then reading the book because both paint a different picture of Snow. In Snow's mind all his actions are justified, from an outside observation he appears to be opportunistic, paranoid and crazy. In the book we learn that from the start the only two people he truly cares about are his grandmother and his sister. Secondly, his "friend" isn't his friend as far as Snow is concerned, the guy is just someone who decided to hang out him and Snow simply put up with him, to Snow, the guy was simply a tool. As far as Grey was concerned, Snow wanted to own her, he saw her as a trophy, a comfort for his own selfish ends and little more, her actions were suspicious enough for him to conclude she was going to dob him in because by that point he had drunk the cool-aid and had grown to believe that humans are savages by nature and she would betray him to save her own hide.

"...what should have been a 4-hour movie..." I think I can agree with that. Or maybe they should have brought Collins in so she could help adapt it like she did for the first movie and for the 2 Mockingjay films. That, or they should have made it a limited series. There was just too much truly important stuff that was left out or seriously rushed. They don't spend any time with Snow building an ACTUAL bond with Sejanus; after going through basic training and spending a couple of weeks in 12 and finding out he won't get paid for a MONTH so he can't send money home, Snow literally IS at his lowest point and considering suicide, so when Sejanus shows up in 12, it's truly a relief and he actually finally becomes a real friend to Snow. (Also, I'd have loved to spend time with them bonding with their fellow Peacekeepers and seeing them get their squad nicknames, "Gent" [Snow] and "Bullseye" [Sejanus].) And then the slow buildup and the little bits and pieces that happen as Snow discovers Sejanus is lying about being broke and finding out bit by bit what he's actually up to. I mean, I went in to this book KNOWING what Snow becomes and convinced I wasn't going to like him and root for him, but I DO, and I can see where he might have become a better person; I can see him gain empathy and understanding, while at the same time there is this hard part of him, this nugget of entitlement; the more people call Lucy Gray "his girl" (how they refer to her as a Tribute, as "his" tribute, his songbird, his girl), the more possessive he starts to feel over her, so that when he shows up in 12 he's jealous of Billy Taupe because Lucy Gray doesn't "belong" to Billy Taupe anymore, she's _his_ girl now. Despite the fact that he hasn't even spoken to her in weeks. We didn't get the time to see that develop. Collins writes her books as 3 acts, and those acts are broken down further into 3 more sections -- inciting incident, rising action, payoff -- so surely that would have made it very adaptable for TV.

Completely agreed!! There's a part that I consider important, where he calls her "his girl" and she tells him because she saved his life and he saved hers they now belong to each other... I feel like that part helps us understand that their relationship goes more into possession and survival than love but the movie doesn't allow us to get into that.

Only recently have I discovered that reaction videos are a thing. I am not a huge internet person, obviously! It makes me wonder how much these will effect the future of filmmaking because they will see how much of the point the audience is missing. For example, there is so much arguing about whether Lucy Gray is alive when the unknown is the whole point. I've read the book several times and barely registered her namesake ballad's lyrics in the movie. I hope that the industry studies the takeaway and gets even better.

When I read the songbirds and snakes one part that really stood out to me was how Snow always called Lucy Gray “his girl”. I know that’s a fairly common thing to do but the way he was saying it really messed me up. He meant it in the normal dating way but it also felt more than that, like saying “that’s my book, you can’t read it.” Or “that’s my dog, it won’t bit me.” When he said it it felt so much more possessive.

The movie brought in one line that addressed what the plot had never outright said the whole while. During Acts 1 & 2 the books made it clear Snow had a decision to make between prioritizing himself, his future, and exceptionalism OR embrace love, empathy, and mediocrity. However the choice was never clear cut until the final act. He never had to choose between the two and could play at both without admitting to anyone let alone himself where he really stood. Act 3, the move to the districts, was finally when the choices had distinct paths. He gets a real sample of what the end of each road could entail and has to start choosing before it’s made for him. While you can always choose to turn to back or do things differently it’s also important to keep in mind every time you make a choice it becomes easier to make another one like it and harder to turn back. Snow’s slippery slope started with Bobbin, although that wasn’t much of a choice, but it made it easier to turn in Sejanus, and even easier to rationalize the mayor’s daughter. The Penultimate decision was Lucy Gray, to turn on her was a leap, but with everything else he’d already done and the greener grass just on the other side, it didn’t seem like an impossible one.

I've always found it fascinating how Katniss' adolescent egocentrism coupled with her first person pov shapes all of our thoughts of this world. For example, in the first book, she falls asleep in a tree and a fire drives her back. In her thoughts, the gamemakers do this to make things more interesting, and that's what we see in the movie. But really it could have been scheduled and nothing to do with her. It's a very cool thing to think about.

I haven't read the books so my theory about Snow is based on the film. I believe Snow's priorities to always being money & power. He had possessive affection for Tigra and his Grandma because of their support. Lucy was a means to an end so (like Tigra and Grandma) had some affection for her because she was helping him. When he was caught cheating, he didn't have a choice to stay, so he wanted to be near someone who supported him. While he was in district 12 he manipulated so he could earn a return to the capital. His friend's antics sabotaged his potential return so he planned to go with his supporter (Lucy Gray). But the instant he realized he could destroy the evidence of his crime he wanted to return to his comfortable life (living in the woods was not fun for him). One leftover snag, the witness who knew too much; Lucy. It wasn't a surprise that he turned on her. She recognized her danger as soon as she realized what that gun meant. She had to escape that clingy, dangerous Snow. If it was worth it he would turn on Tigra (which he did) and his Grandma.

That doesn't seem his style though. He's sneaky and subtle and relies on charm to get what he wants until that fails. Then he goes for treachery and poison. More likely he would've manipulated Tigris into getting more and more cosmetic changes (maybe even paying for them himself, maybe doing everything he can to boost her popularity) and then suddenly withdrawing all his financial and emotional support and abandoning her completely.

Personally, I do think Lucy is Katniss' great-grandmother on her father's side. it's even possible that Gale's family (Which even Katniss has stated that they could almost pass for siblings) are a cousin-branch forgotten about because of the Covey's nomadic and mysterious nature. Katniss' father lived on the seam, her mother moved there from the wealthier part of 12. My theory is that after several years hiding on the edges of 12, around the Meadows, to make sure Snow wouldn't come back, and people forgot her face, Lucy had at the least, two sons with a man possessing the surname Everdeen, and Lucy, desperate to hide her identity from Snow, takes the last name herself, becoming Lucy Everdeen. These sons go on to have children, notably Katniss' own father. This is a strong case in my opinion, because the two songs Katniss sings are Lucy Gray's songs. She sang them first, and people repeated them for the popularity before one was banned for the 'rebellious nature'. But Lucy, knowing the crimes of the Capitol, kept her rebellious streak and taught her children the songs, but informed them never to sing them in public, and this lesson was passed down with the songs. Katniss basically says as much when her father taught the songs to her. That is why Katniss isn't just depressed and defeated, she's cynical and aware. Much like Lucy Gray was in her Games. Lucy knew very well it was just a sick way to punish them, a sentiment passed down for generations. Because Lucy lived it. Her children would forget bits and pieces over time, naturally, but Katniss would have picked up the same mentality from her father as a descendant of Lucy Gray, and that would explain why Katniss' father was willing to risk punishment to teach her how to survive. I read the book and enjoyed the conceptualizations it pulled. A little backstory here and some death there. A flaw to fix in the system. but overall, it felt a lot like reading Katniss from an outsider's perspective. Katniss could turn on the dazzle too when she wanted, but due to the harsh reality and trauma that surviving the 1oth hunger games caused, and being betrayed, Lucy's bright and performative personality became cold and closed off, which I see being passed down, as we are what were are raised from. What really tickles my theory is Lucy's comment about the name Katniss. It would be plausible that the name concept was passed down each generation until they finally had a girl to name Katniss Everdeen, the last Mockingjay, Great-Granddaughter of Lucy Gray Baird, the first Mockingjay. Survival was in Katniss' odds all along.

18:33 suprised Tigris's s*x work is overlooked here. I see her appearance as being a result of a life of capitol exploitation. Snow being ultimatly right about what Tigris would be willing to do is not unlike his sweeping opinions of human nature being proven right through the games. Both prove him correct but they do so in highly unnatural, manufactured circumstances. It almost doesnt matter if snow is correct when he suspects tigris of selling sex or suspects lucy of being capable of "betraying" him-- he creates the circumstances that necessitate those kinds of choices. He believes the worst in people according to his personal ideas of morality and it retroactively justifies him in his eyes. Snow ultimately believes that people will do anything to survive and get ahead in life, that the cost of living is simply your life.

12:21 they also both had a semi-useless mother figure, snows grandma because she had a privileged life and didn’t need to learn to do things for herself, and Katniss’s mother because she shut down after the death of her husband/katniss’s dad.

i saw the movie first so i was taken aback by snows 'sudden' change but then it clicked that the signs were always there. his actions were always selfish, even when he was helping lucy or sejanus, he was doing it for himself. however, when i read the book, jesus christ, it made so much sense. it was so cool to have an explanation for his actions.

I really appreciate Snow as a character now. A lot of times antagonists are seemingly evil just for the sake of it and with little backstory as to how they got there. The prequel did a great job in not only portraying how he ended up where he is but “why”. Such though you can even sympathise and imagine yourself ending up like that if you were put under the same circumstances. Human beings are complex and they behave the way they do for a reason, and a reason that you would only understand if you heard the full story.

The only problem i have with the depiction of Tigeres in the move is she's supposed to be 3 years older than Snow... even with the plastic surgery done which might cover a lot, she looked in her 40' or 50'...

See I think Snow's biggest mistake was putting the responsibility of spin on others, especially Katniss. All he had to do was have an interview with Flickerman, with Katniss and Peta in tow, where he claims responsibility for the rule change, and it's last minute enforcement. Paint Seneca as cruel and power grasping, and that it was Snow who saved the Star Crossed Lovers. Now Katniss isn't a symbol of rebellion, and Snow has shown that the capital is "fair and generous".

15:00 I think Snow was falling in love with her, and that is why he turned the games into what they are. He knows how powerful a good show can be because he fell for Lucy Gray when she was probably just using him to stay alive.

I always interpreted that Tigris and Snow had a falling-out because it was Snow who was secretly manipulating her. Eventually her ideals and his clashed and perhaps he may have been the reason why she was so surgically and genetically altered. He could have cruelly forced her to take plastic surgery and body modifications. I think one day Snow decided that she was now longer publicly attractive or appealing for corporate and government sponsorship, hence why he fired her from her profession.

we do see the first signs of Tigris and Snow falling out at the end of the movie but i think that would happen after their grandma dies. i like to think the real reason why he fired her was because knew the war was going to happen.

Regarding Prim's death. Snow just confirmed what Katniss already thought. I don't remember if the movie showed BeeTee and Gale making the gift boxes that blew up twice and Katniss seeing this. She knew District 13 had the bombs.

I think something really deep down in Snow, was interested in how Katniss played the game. As though he’s enjoying (in a sense) the competition and mind games. A competition he may not have had since those first games he mentored. I don’t know if that makes sense how I worded it. Like how the Riddler loves playing intellectual games with the enemies he feels are worthy and challenging enough to solve his clues and riddles.
