rereading the books something i noticed is just *how much* distric 12 is at a disadvantage. things that give other tributes a chance, they dont have. some tributes get a bit jacked or gain some skills from working (tree climbing, fishing, swimming, tinkering, use of tools etc). but not 12, they dont start working the mines until 18, when they wont be reaped anymore, even tho historically children were deemed useful in mines for their small size (a practice only stopped for ethical reasons which we know the capitol couldnt give 2 cents about). they go to school but i dont see them benefiting from an education. is it ust to keep them busy? pretense for why they aren't working? they are extremely malnourished, there are also no additional food sources, which creates the highest incentive to buy tesseracts. the fence is placed to separate from the woods (and other foraging areas we saw in Songbird). it is only because they have become so lax with turning it on that Katniss can go into the woods and gain the skills that help her in the game. peeta is one of the lucky few of marginally better conditions. who helped in the bakery, gaining muscle, could get some decent food himself. its almost like someone (Snow) actively sabotaged 12. the question is: was that before or after haymitch became a mentor? Imagine: nobody really cared about 12 until they finally had a proper mentor, someone who cared. and someone that pissed of Snow. he would try really hard and over time every tiny thing he could use to try and help his tributes, the next year would be negated. until there is no chance at all they'll win no matter how hard he tries. it was *lucky* katniss had some skills. she was not supposed to, it was only because she broke the rules nobody cared to enforce anymore. but hear Katniss' mother say how bad it was back in her day. which would suggest an active worsening and oppressing of the people of 12, sabotaging them from the start
@blackharmonics45185 ай бұрын
Exactly. When Katniss and Peeta returned to D12, Snow gradually intensified surveillance over time. Before, nobody really paid much attention to Katniss and Gale hunting. Of course, it was technically still against the law, but even the Peacekeepers bought their goods and willingly turned a blind eye. It wasn't until Katniss and Peeta returned to D12 that the measures were significantly tightened, and brutal punishments were reintroduced. Since there was no real threat from D12, the measures were gradually relaxed more and more until nobody really cared anymore. Haymitch, who had given up as a mentor, didn't pose a real threat. Katniss wasn't on anyone's radar because she hadn't played a role important enough until the start of her games. Even if Snow had always known about her rule-breaking, it would hardly have mattered to him, as she had essentially fought for herself and never aimed for rebellion. Only when she was thrust into the games and carried the other districts with her did Snow recognize the danger and ensure that nobody could come into a similar position by tightening the leash again.
@jesseli28205 ай бұрын
Snow sabotaged D12 as soon as he became president. That much is clear from his past with Lucy Gray as this was the district she was from. After her 'betrayal' he made sure to keep D12 oppressed so that any tributes from their had little no chance of ever winning. Nobody cared for D12 as they were purposefully made the most impoverished district and so nothing was ever expected of them as they could barely keep themselves fed, their industry also being coal was the least valued for the Capitol compared to other districts. I think part of the reason why Snow punishes Haymitch for winning is because he didn't expect any victors to come from D12 not just because he saw his win with the force field as defying the capitol - which it wasn't really I genuinely believe he wanted a reason to punish him. I don't think Snow wanted anymore victors from D12 after Haymitch so by killing his family and making him become a mentor he knew that overtime it would destroy Haymitch mentally so that he lost the will to even try to mentor his tributes each year, thus putting D12 at another disadvantage for winning. I would really recommend reading The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes if you haven't as it gives a good insight to Snow's early life and how he became president and also as to why D12 was always going to always be at a disadvantage because of him.
@matthewg5042 ай бұрын
You are right about them being malnourished in 12 and they don’t really explain it in the movie and it happens too fast to really mean anything but that actually helps Katniss in the 1st book. (That she was used to being hungry). Because when she blows up the tributes pile of food in book the tributes dont really have a way of eatting and arent used to being hungry or thirsty like they are and it weakens them since they’re not used to that and kind of gives Katniss and Peeta an advantage over them in the end. The movie doesnt really go into reason why she blows that up but in the book that is why.

See, that's the part of Haymitch's story that never made sense to me; the Tribute from 1 chases him and he's running away, realizes he has gotten to the edge of the cliff, he's bleeding out and panicked, probably delirious. Tribute throws her axe at him and misses _because he collapsed_ and gets killed by the Capitol's forcefield...and somehow that is Haymitch's fault? I mean, I know the Capitol is crazy AF and the Gamemakers in particular, but Ms. Collins needs to explain why this was such a bad look for the Gamemakers that it required Haymitch be punished. Wtf did he do that made them look bad? Was there some kind of outcry in D1? Was this tribute from a well-connected family. I can see where it would make THEM look bad, because their girl was too stupid to know better than to throw an axe towards a cliff; surely all the tributes knew that the Gamemakers would have made allowances to keep tributes from ending their own lives by throwing themselves off cliffs. It just NEVER made sense to me that they killed Haymitch's whole family AND the member of another family just to get back at him for ANOTHER tribute's failed attempt to kill him. Now...if Haymitch had acted up during his Victory Tour and hadn't fallen in line with the Capitol's message, and that is what got his family killed in retaliation, THAT would make more sense, and make it obvious to Katniss that he knows what he's talking about when tells her "This ride doesn't end."
@chanbang3786 ай бұрын
It does seem weird but I think it’s because Haymitch used the forcefield deliberately to win, he spent most of the games finding the edge to discover what was there and found out about the forcefield and saw it brings things back. Yeah he was probably delirious but he ran to that cliff deliberately to use it as a weapon, the girl from district 1 isn’t stupid for throwing the axe since she has no idea about the forcefield. Haymitch knows that the axe will bounce back and kill her. I think why it’s considered something to be punished for is because Haymitch found out something he should’ve have in the arena, pointed out a flaw with the forcefield they didn’t want people to know and used that to his advantage. He decided to use something that wasn’t intended to be a weapon. It wouldn’t seem like a big deal, but I think when the captiol looks at what Haymitch did, he’s a threat. The fact that rather than playing the games how they wanted him to, he went out deliberately to find something at the edge, and it feels like he even outsmarted the captiol by doing this as well
@ameliamelendez15745 ай бұрын
Haymitch was a rebel who knew they wanted to depict him as an intentional killer (like they tried to with Katniss in Catching Fire); The more they show tributes as secretly evil murderers who are just waiting for an opportunity to act, the less empathy & therefore less rebellion will come from any capitol or district citizens. But Haymitch chose to do the humane thing of refusing to try to kill his friend + held her as she died which garnered sympathy for him. Then he exploited a loophole wherein he didn't have to kill the final tribute to win, he made it so the game makers killed her. It made him/the districts look sympathetic and he knew it - he was rebellious about the games from the beginning. From the capitol's POV, it looked like a rebel fooled/beat the game makers while simultaneously garnering sympathy for the districts. They had to kill his family to show that trying to beat the capitol wasn't worth it
@Skye_Writer5 ай бұрын
@@jesseli2820 since Lucy Gray didn't exist at the time the original novel was written, I don't think you can factor any feelings Snow had about D12 into the equation. That's more of a retcon.

@@chanbang378 - To extend on this... “I don’t see that it makes that much difference. They’ll still be one hundred percent as stupid as usual, so I figure my odds will be roughly the same." On the surface, this answer that Haymitch gave Flickerman comes off as him having a massive ego. For the Capitol though, this showed them (primarily President Snow) that Haymitch was a potential problem because he's clever and he knows it. In the actual game, Haymitch did prove how clever he was. His ego and lack of skills compared to careers was evident, but he was still able to survive. Him pairing with Masilee was another piece to the puzzle; Haymitch wasn't the type to team up (ego), but he did (cleverness) anyway with a girl from his own district nonetheless (potential rebellion spark). His quest to find the edge of the arena is a threat because it shows how his mind works in a battle scenario with tactics. He wants to take advantage of what the Capitol has built with the environment of the arena. Then, as stated, he fled back to edge when he was desperate to survive. Delirious, or not, he was thinking well enough to get to the point where he would have the advantage; he knew about the force field and how objects bounce back, and the D1 tribute did not. It's not just about Haymitch using the force field as a weapon when its design and purpose wasn't to be a tool used in the arena. It's about the fact that Haymitch, someone from the poorest district, was clever enough to outsmart President Snow and the Capitol in desperation. For civilians, Haymitch was brilliant and deserves all their attention as a victor. For Snow, he's a problem and needed to be punished for his acts of defiance.
@awesumtoast975 ай бұрын

And her relationship with Peeta doesn’t actually blossom properly until after all the fighting. Because she was constantly in survival mode. Peeta was genuinely kind and helped her in times of need. Which meant she wanted to do the same. Idk. I think in the sense that these books explore real ppl vs idols, the way we see love bloom in the characters is the same.

I think Effie and Haymitch give Katniss and Peeta every hunger games video to watch and study on tape and thats what they do on the train on their victor tour! And it kind of explains why her mom is spaced out (besides the dad dying) The moms BEST friend died in the 2nd quarter quell . . She helps Haymitch with a poison dart gun then they split up and Haymitch hears her screaming and comes back and finds her dying, she was attacked by mutt birds with sword like beaks!

Haymitch is a top tier character. I’ve been told I act like Katniss, and I’ve been told I act like Haymitch. I’ve heard people say *several* times, ‘I’m happy she’s under 21’

I forgot about Portia because I haven't read the books in a while, I've only recently watched the movies. She definitely is way less important in the movies than she was in the books which sucks cause she was a pretty good character

I was seeing a therapist on better help, It took me three tries to get to this guy and he was actually pretty great. I was seeing him for family issues and abandonment issues All these issues in my life blah blah blah. Anyways, I got really attached to this therapist because he was actually so great and one day he said that he was leaving better help and then he gave me an email if I ever needed him. I thought it was weird though so I initially thought I'd never bother to reach out to him, but at the end of our conversation he sent the email again so I took that as he wanted me to reach out to him because we had some decent conversations and Morley talked about books and gardening during our time. The email was fake! It didn't even exist! So I was seeing this guy for abandonment issues and he ABANDONED ME! I still thought it was pretty funny instead of being traumatized by that crazy happening. But I still question better help.

I imagine haymitch being the crazy uncle for katniss and peetas children in the end of the book. Like if haymitch finds out that they are being bullied by other school children, haymitch takes it into his own hands. He just shows up at the bullies house and just beats up their parents and older siblings if he deems them old enough right in front of the ones tormenting his niece or nephew.

I have some constructive criticism for you! This video was absolutely amazing! It's the first one I watched, and I'm now subscribed. No notes there. My constructive criticism is more directed at channel 'housekeeping'. I think it would be very beneficial if you had a short outro segment, even just a couple of seconds long. KZbin likes to take the ending of a video as an opportunity to show an advertisement. Ads are usually placed between chapter breaks, so many folks have been conditioned to assume there's something coming afterwards. KZbin won't detect a chapter break if your outro is very short. Having a 'breather' for a moment or two to pause the video and decide what to watch next is very nice! On the flipside, getting an ad less than a second after you've completed a quippy sentence is downright jarring. Now, if you add a segment to the video that you assume people won't be watching, it WILL affect your overall 'watch time' as a percentage and whatnot. However, you can also make a tactical editing choice. A whole lot of people use their outro as an opportunity to link similar videos. Doing this, overall, WILL increase viewer retention. It's a strategic choice that falls outside the scope of 'video criticism'. No matter what you decide, I'm gonna keep watching your stuff! You're clearly a skilled artist. I emplore you to consider what I've written here; I think it might be a small detail that helps your channel overall!
