I definitely enjoy my manual transmission over the automatic on my BmW, but I can see your point on why you chose the auto. I hate when car guys look down on automatic owners because they say it's not true enthusiast but they both have their places.

2014 zed auto here. I chose the auto because it fits with my commute and I didn't buy the car to Tokyo drift. If you are looking at mods, have some recommendations for you. JDL auto design makes some killer custom parts for the twins. I have the JDL EL header (with cat), Perrin over pipe, JDL front pipe (without cat), and the 2.5" Perrin exhaust (resonated). Custom 93 octane tune and well, the car is right on the money for me. Plus, I went with thermal coating on the header and front pipe (black). Torque dip is barely noticeable now. I still have fun on my spirited runs. Compliments a plenty. The exhaust note is more reminiscent of a WRX STI. When people come up and see it's an automatic, I honestly don't get flak for it. Drive what you like. If this thing had a DCT, the manual argument would still be there. Just enjoy the ride. Stick or no stick. Bragging rights for a car that YOU buy is bs imho. Cheers for the cool video. Btw, I get 30/31 mpg on average on 93 octane. If I keep it, I'm set for SC. I am on the fence, because the car is how they intended it to be from design to factory. Peace.

Great video. Manual fanatics that have never driven casually on a highway or replaced a clutch would never understand an Automatic. For the last 20 years I've lived with manual transmissions (VW GTI and Taurus SHO), and although they CAN allow higher absolute speed on a track OR if you keep your engine ALWAYS at high revs... you're always one downshift away from being ready to react to a high-speed Camry closing in on the lane-change gap you need to get off at the next exit. With my Automatic 86 Hakone, if I see an opening...I floor it.... then BAM I am THERE. Simply put, a Manual is slower from 50-70 in real world situations 95% of the time unless you're driving like a maniac on meth, that's why even Ferrari has given up the shifter on most of its cars. Manuals are definitely "fun" in varying degrees, but give it a few decades and a few thousand dollars in repairs and a few stressful commutes then reality sinks in. Aggressive drivers and drivers in areas with lots of Stop lights with 50+ mph streets will enjoy Manuals....for a while, but...they'll also enjoy more powerful vehicles to begin with. If I was in Texas - a Manual Mustang GT would make more sense than an Auto 86. Now that I'm in Cali I am non-stressed on highways, but having a party on the curvy coastal and mountain roads!

Hmmmmm....yes to the convenience factor (I've had both). I tried every setting in the auto to make it more manual - best result I found was to turn off VSC and TRAC, VSC sport mode on, and set the rev limit up to 7000 or better. In the end, even then, I couldn't make it peel out and without everything off I couldn't stop the automatic from shifting all the time. Also, since it isn't a double clutch, there was a delay when hammering on the gas again between gears. Looking back, adding a Sprint Booster to the accelerator may have helped fixed that for under $400 CDN but the drift factor everyone loves in this car is missing without a clutch. That said....at high speed (not that we suggest anyone drive at high speeds) the paddle shift in any car, especially cornering at speed, lets you keep a solid F1 two hand grip on the wheel and shift while braking late. The manual is a tricky car to heel toe with such small pedals so nailing the down shift takes some skill...in the auto you just flip the paddle and let the sport mode rev matching on down shift do the work for you. I miss that! So what next...I bought the manual of course. Like Chris Harris said, why have a drift car that won't drift. Get the manual, kick the clutch and let it spin!! Even with 19" wheels and 275's on the rear I can spin on demand. Light it right!! Cheers!
@RodrigoMedeirosRM8 жыл бұрын
Best comment by far! before i dig into your comment just want to flat out say i highly appreciate you taking the time to comment and watch the video! First and foremost you are absolutely correct the drift factor is completely missing! When engaging with the automatic transmission it will never give you the same level of engagement that you get from manual, so that kind of good feeling of "Skill" and the drift-ability and extra control from the car is gone! Ive tried many different methods to attempt to make it feel more manual (My intention with this video was to introduce the channel to the Automatic BRZ - different niche than the already out there videos on KZbin with manuals, so stay tuned for video on how to make a Automatic BRZ more manual ;) ) Thanks again for the amazing comment!

Shifting and driving a manual car is easy. The thing I find annoying is stopping and going on hills (yes I know use the clutch to hold the car... but thats bad for the clutch) and someone is like inches from you rear bumper and I don't feel like using the ebrake to hold the car in traffic. However, with manual there are alot of components that can fail clutch disk,pressure plate flywheel(if you cant resurface), release bearing, pilot bearing and slave cylinder that may need to be replaced and these all get really expensive depending on what you get do. When you have to go in for one thing, you may as well do everything and the $$$$$ will add up especially if you can't do the work. Yes automatics are even more complicated and have components that can fail but If the Automatic transmission in my 300zx goes I cant just get another transmission for cheap off Ebay and it has all the components necessary.. used auto tranny are cheap and plentiful especially for sports cars. I turn overdrive off in my Z and have engine braking and then I can just downshift to gear 2 or 1 when I need to... good for the snow. Plus a shift-kit valve body upgrade and some other electronic modifications can speed up shifting alot.

I get your point of why its better for you. But you can't say it's better in the video title because simply it's not better. Since the manual transmission is slightly lighter and has a faster 0-100 time with the only downside that it can be tiring when stuck in traffic for more than 30 min. Also, with time, auto transmission tend to become slower after years of driving which makes it lose it value even further. On the other hand, driving a manual is so much fun and engaging especially with the great feel and position the brz shifter has. A proud owner of an FR-S ;) Also, keep the BRZ videos coming!

Agreed 100%, Manual will be far more engaging than an automatic ever will be! I mean literally these drivers are attempting to race past everyone else in traffic... like, chill man. You’re in traffic. You’re gonna end up stopping a block or two away anywa, not saying all manual drivers are like that but definitely are plenty who do that just as there are those who understand where they are and aren’t pushing their cars when it’s unnecessary

It will do that a little bit. Remember it is a 200 HP car so don't expect it to be a drag racing beast. I'm running UEL headers with a stage 2 tune from OFT. That gives it more power, but still it isn't a drag racer. As for the automatic transmission, it isn't bad. It suits my needs for daily driving in heavy traffic. The paddle shifters are really fun. I have taken it driving in canyons with lots of twists and turns. It performed very well. Remember it is your car and your money. Take one for a test drive and decide for yourself. I recommend it 100%.

Why is the manual faster? ( 5 horsepower more?

its 50LBs lighter and having a clutch free's up a little more torque all around. (I drive a 2017 BRZ auto) Was in the market for a used manual but they are hard to find in good condition. Found mine in mint condition with 100K mile extended warranty and that was enough for me to bite! I enjoy paddles daily!

The 17+ manual has an updated intake manifold while the automatic retains the same as pre-facelift.

to people who got an automatic BRZ how easy is it to get one, my local dealer speaks about the rarity of the automatic ones for the 2017/2018 model.

I had the question and test drove both the same day highway and traffic. I bought the manual because as the auto might have its advantages. It's like having sex with a condom for the rest of your life. Now go ahead. Argue the point 😳
@Ala7madFilms5 жыл бұрын
brz automatic is not a bad thing, but they shoved the CVT on it, which is not performance oriented at all. If only Dual Clutch was an option for that, I would take it.
@lamkevin11417 жыл бұрын
A manual really isn't that bad in normal traffic because it really does become 2nd nature. People are over exegerating the clutch in a manual transmission. It's somewhat annoying driving a manual transmission when you're tired but like I said before it does become somewhat 2nd nature over time. That's how you know society is becoming more and more lazy.

auto or manual makes no difference to me! I wanna get a Auto FRS/BRZ because one I like the car itself and two I wanna slam mine. won't be building a race car by no means but I'll be enjoying mine none the less! also I drive a auto Is250 which also came manual. no one has ever given me any crap for owning an auto

yes Automatic is a tad heavier

Yup the Automatic is heavier! The car weights 2835 lbs with an automatic versus 2793 lbs for a manual! Thanks for watching and thanks for the comment :)

i feel like nothing you said actually tells why it's better than manual. And actually manual saves more gas than automatic, more fun, makes you more connected to the car...especially when you start modding the car, and it is actually more satisfying to be a manual driver than a automatic . though i wonder can you drive manual? usually when someone knows manual..automatic becomes boring, ...like a go go kart.. but good quality video either way

Thanks for the inputs my friend! Automatic vs Manual have their merits in allot of scenarios it really comes down to personal preference, personally my biggest factor in getting the Automatic was geological location. You can view it from a (Urbanization vs rural) perspective where the driving is very different from a stop and go vs empty roads scenario. I owned a BMW E46 before and i could not deal with the constant stop and go and had to sell it because of that and it always stayed in the back of my head when purchasing a car in the future. Im sure if i end up moving out of toronto Manual would be great :). Thanks for the comment and watching and great channel yourself! Keep it up :)
@raydden12108 жыл бұрын
yes, planning to start a channel for my BRZ as well,..and you are absolutely right...it comes down to personal preference...the advantage you could have mention are like every 10k miles or so manual owners has to replace clutch cuz clutch wears out fast especially when trying to have fun with the car, and yes i agree with the location wise , totally more easy to deal with traffic vs manual, n maybe something like in case you need someone to drive you back or something in a case you are drunk or get incapable of driving auto comes more handy because most people knows auto so its easier to get someone to drive u back with ur car..lol,..just hope it don't become boring for you down the road..

Those cars are super slow, I beat one in my 5100lb 06 Trailblazer SS. They're nice cars, but they should of made the performance better at factory. It's a shame.. I'd rather own a 350z.

Thats the only thing your ss can beat, those trailblazers ss are slow as shit for being a perfomance model. My srt jeep would smoke your weak sausage supreme.

So, you actually wanted a manual, but you are ok with the automatic? It sounded like "because I am too lazy to shift" was the only proper argument. A 'classic' auto-transmission with a torque converter really offers no other benefits besides laziness, if the number of gears is the same as the manual version of a car. Even the better fuel economy on paper is not true in real life, like in this case, too. (according to the 123 GT86 drivers on spritmonitor the fuel economy is pretty much exactly the same)
@gtmike9166 жыл бұрын
Jenson from Engineering Explained showed a difference of 2.6 mpg between the Auto and Manual of the FRS/BRZ but the funny thing is.... While the auto had somewhat better mpg, it was WAY slower than the Manual. The Manual 0-60 mph was 6.5 secs, the Auto was 7.6 secs. I never drove stick before and would be starting out, but I'll be damned if I cough up a whole 1.1 sec of acceleration just for 'convenience' and less than 10% more fuel efficiency.
