Nostalgia indeed. I had a B50SS and a Cheney B50MX many moons ago.

Thanks for the interest and comment Ron. Hope it brings back happy memories. The Cheney MX must have been a real animal.

More than half a century's passed since the B50 left the factory and the ravages of time and hard use are really evident. Fortunately you have an assembled machine to start with and I will follow your progress with great interest. There were very few of these that ever made into the US so it will be a restoration of another one that got away.

This is already a fantastic project. Brings back great memories of that era. Is that petrol tank worth restoring?

Cheers Mac. Simple answer regarding tank - no. I have another in the garage which I think has the correct tap locations.

Hi Nigel I’ll measure up when next up at the other storage unit as it’s up there at the moment. Give me a couple of days if that’s ok. Thanks for the interest.

How does one of these ride compared to a Yamaha SR500? I've had two of those.

Thanks for the comment and interest. I can't say as I've never ridden either (yet)! Apologies but thanks again.

OMG - the wiring! What a nightmare. That doesn't look rain-proof from where I'm sitting. I suppose with all the, exciting, new-fangled equipment such as indicators/flasher units they didn't have the time or money to design a proper wiring loom. A tidy one that was properly protected from the elements. That mish-mash of wires under the tank is laughable. Admittedly, my T120 is pre-indicator territory - it has a much simpler wiring circuit - but I wasn't happy with the way the loom was laid out. So I reconsructed it the way I wanted it - neat and out of harm's way. Brown and white to the stop lamp switch. Time consuming but rewarding. Angus. The exhaust system on this B50SS is patently not 52 years-old so why the obsession with 'originality'? The tank is an abortion. What are your intentions for this machine? You should let go of the 'originality' fantasy, dig deep into your pockets and have this bike professionally restored. P.S. How come you have so many NOS parts?
@BSAPowerSet

Hi Dave and thanks for the comment and interest. Yes the wiring loom above the electrics box is a mash up and it's a similar story with the other models in the range where the wiring cables from the two handlebar switch blocks meet the main harness under the tank. It is more complex though on the singles due to the number of components closely packed together in the electrics box I suppose. Good idea I think but not well executed. Why do you think the exhaust is not original? The bike has done very few miles and must have been stored mainly indoors for most of its life. It was last on the road many years ago. The tank I agree is an abortion and will be changed as I have another. My obsession is not necessarily that all the parts are original from production but that the parts are were as originally intended and the bike still looks and functions how the factory intended and has not been modified or customised. The motor in this case certainly hasn't been molested. I do know what I want to do with this bike longer term I think. If I take the restore option I'll manage it myself and sub certain jobs out as I did with the Lightning and the Fury SS. I have a stash of NOS parts that I've collected over the years pertaining purely to the '71 range, as many cycle parts are common and the different tinware is for factory paint colour matching. Thanks again.

@@BSAPowerSet Fair dos, Angus. It's just that the exhaust system caught my eye because it looks, well, so pristine compared to the paintwork and corrosion on the fasteners, chrome, kickstart pedal etc. I suppose the pipes could have been repainted quite recently and the heat shield re-chromed. Anyway, I look forward to seeing more on your B50SS. Cheers.

@@DaveFiggley Cheers Dave. FYI the heat shields are in stainless steel hence usually get bashed out of shape rather than corrode. The pipe isn’t as pristine as it appears in the videos. Anyhow we’ll crack on and thanks again for the interest.
