Thank you, BsianDad for an excellent overview of the features of the 7740. The level of detail and showing the internal component layout is especially appreciated. Covering the heat dissipation and cooling thoroughly is something that we don't see often enough in laptop and mobile workstation reviews. The single most important point you made was that Dell possesses the technology to incorporate a truly first-rate trackpad and did so on the Precision 5000 series. I'd still be curious to know why they have not added such a trackpad. I'll continue to watch your videos and have subscribed.

Hi BsianDad, Great reviews on both 5540 and 7740. Great to see an Aussie review as the first review video on these mean machines. How does the 7740 compare with 7540? Does the 7540 have anything less (which is not available in options) than 7740, apart from the size? Cheers
@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi rohit tekale, I have been trying to get my hands on the Precision 7540 so I can have a play with that as well and still working on it. There is a few option differences between the 7740 and the 7540 (besides the size and weight). First the 7740 has extra USB3.1 port at the rear so total USB3.1 port is three where as 7540 is only two USB3.1 ports. Second difference is the 7740 can house four PCIe SSD and the 7540 can only house max three PCIe SSD. Third difference is the discrete graphics option the 7540 can house the Quadro T1000/T2000 and max at RTX3000 where as the 7740 is RTX 3000/4000/5000. Lastly there is a HD screen option on the 7740 which the 7540 doesn't have. The 7540 laptop is like bridging between the Precision 5540 and the 7740. Hope that helps explain the differences. Thanks also for the feedback, its very encouraging to get good feedback =). Hope you get to enjoy my other videos too.

Very nice review of this workstation! Gives a good impression and also some questions: a) Is there a coil whine detectable (like the HP ZBook 17 G6 suffers from at this moment)? b) how long did you use this laptop to get better known with small bugs and habits, every laptop has c) can you provide us with a sound recording when the cpu/gpu are working full throttle (100%)? Why in heavens name does someone wants a 1600x900 17" display?? It's good to see that Dell sends in "normally" equipped workstations instead the Full Metal Jacket versions that often are reviewed by others.
@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Offgridd, welcome to my videos. Unfortunately I have had to return the laptop back to Dell already so can't give you a sound recording of the fan noise anymore. I haven't played with much HP Zbooks and I am trying to get some HP contacts so I can do some reviews on HP products too. From what I remember I didn't hear much whine sounds from the 7740. I actually used the 7740 as my main computer for two weeks, it was really quite an effect traveling with it as my backpack was designed for 15" notebooks so had it sticking out of the zippers lol. I didn't have the computer exhibit any issues when I used it for two weeks worked flawlessly the unit I had so I was lucky. My only issue was the dock which I mention in the video as I didn't have the correct supported WD19DC dock. The other thing that come to mind that wasn't as nice to use was the trackpad, just found it pretty plain for a flagship laptop and didn't make me want to use it much. I also know one of my subscribers have played with the thermal paste to get much better results for thermal throttling which I don't advise unless you know what you are doing. As for the HD display some people would be after the TN panel for special reasons but as for resolution wise its not fantastic at all. Hoping one of my viewers or great subscribers who own this beast might be able to better answer your questions.

Great videos Thank you. I am about to buy the DELL 7740 but I need your advice about the processor and graphics card. Is there a huge performance difference between the Nvidia RTX 5000 and RTX 4000 knowing the 1000 dollars price difference? And which is better or which one do you recommend I9 processor or the Xeon?. I am an architect working on programs such as 3dmax, Vray, AutoCAD, Maya, and my work demands photorealistic rendering and sometimes animations. Hope you hear from you soon. That will greatly help me decide.
@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Agnomen Doppelganger, welcome to my videos. I will start off with the processor first. Both will be fine running the software you mention and really to break it down simply to you i9 vs Xeon is this i9 is quicker and Xeon is for reliability. As for how much quicker is the i9 vs Xeon I'm afraid I couldn't give you good % but my guess is 5-10%. Xeons have ability to run ECC RAM which is good for the software you run. Best way to describe this is i9 is your petrol car and the Xeon is your diesel truck. The petrol car is faster than the truck but when pulling heavy loads for long period of time it suffers, can have overheating (in case of i9 more thermal throttling as time goes on) where as diesel truck will be slower speed but be perfectly happy to pull heavy loads all year round. If your a working professional architect my suggestion is don't stuff around with the i9 put a little extra money go with the Xeon with the ECC RAM, you don't want crashing or random times rendering when your trying to hit deadlines. As for Graphics for the RTX5000 vs RTX4000 personally I think $1000 is too much if it was half the price that be better for the performance difference but really its a matter of budget on your end. In seriousness this video is great which does run through the benchmarks for the software you run which does have the RTX5000 and RTX 4000 comparisons in there, have a watch to see if you think its worth the $1000: kzbin.info/www/bejne/aHvQiKWFZ8eWqbM . My opinion is if its for work and my projects will be render quicker then that $1000 will quickly pay itself back in the time you save.

Thanks for a well-crafted review. I found this channel after bailing out of multiple extremely superficial "reviews" (imagine those are air quotes!) that are nothing more than advertising. I'm a computer engineer and really don't benefit from a video explaining that a 17" laptop has a 17" screen (I'm not exaggerating -- there's one out there for mobile workstations that is that shallow). Your video was objective in tone, detailed in coverage, and made with high production quality. For what it's worth, my only critique -- and this is tiny, and intended constructively -- is that you don't need to repeat the "please like and subscribe" mantra. Your work is good enough to stand on its own, and your target audience are knowledgeable enough to understand how KZbin works. One or (at most) two such requests would be enough. And yes, I did both "like" and "subscribe". :) Again, thanks for this solid review. I'm looking forward to seeing your other content.

I do my best to try keep the video easy to understand for non-tech people while also keeping the interesting technical results. Thank you for your feedback and critique, I understand what you mean by the like and sub mantra, I'm personally not really into it as well but to try reach my main goal of 1k subs I have found from research it still needed to remind people to encourage them. I will take your critique on board and more than likely tone down that mantra once I hit that goal which is very soon =), yay. Don't worry I will continue to try improve the videos and better tests. If there is something you like to know I can try formulate a test for in the future reviews. Hi Antonio, welcome to my videos and hope you enjoy them. So there are two suggestions considering what you have listed out. First I since you going for the Xeon, I would be keeping that 8 core for the 3D work for sure and seeing your at the base 16GB RAM already, the only thing you can do is lower the graphics to the RTX3000 but you will get a bit of hit in graphics wise but will save you a bit of cash. The other way is to go with the i9 version but really the error correction and stability for long term workhorse is worth the Xeon price. Another suggestion is to look into dropping to the Precision 7540, its the 15" version of the 7740. You can still get the same specs for processor and RAM but the graphics can only go to the RTX 3000 but that will save you a bit of money too and the cooling on it and design is very similar to the 7740. I hope that helps.

Heya, again great video! Gotta love the fact that you do these in depth reviews for mobile Workstations. Quick question regarding the battery life: how long do you think the battery will last in better battery mode, when you browse the web (several tabs open) while working in an word or excel document? And is the 50% brightness of this mode enough to work outside? Of course not in the bright sun, but in somewhat shady place.
@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much TMT98, the mobile workstations are something I am very interested in myself as these are closer to what I would be using to do my own work :). As for your question about battery life of course this will depend a bit on screen variant you choose and which CPU and number of hard drives. My expectations for better battery life is expecting between 9.5-11hours 9.5hr for fully speced up version. As for 50% brightness the HD version of the display you will struggle a little in outside you need at it full brightness, for the FHD and UHD you will be fine at 50% brightness outside as their brightness value is higher much higher. Hope that helps.

Unfortunately I don't have any affiliate link to Dell atm, I am working on that one and would suggest to purchase where you are comfortable and better price as well.

What about durability? Does it carry MIL STD-810G Standard?
@parahumanoid4 жыл бұрын
R U kidding? You can't provide that on a 17" workstation that weighs over 2.5 kg. What you request is provided at 14" size at most, AFAIK. Twist resistance at a 17" lever would require much-much thicker frames of the same materials or the necessity for a different material for a frame (the one much harder than the Al-Mg alloy currently used).

Excellent review, Thank you for the best review of precision 7000 series, want to see 7540 review as I am planning to buy 7540. Also, I need your help, if I take 8GB, 1x8GB, DDR4 2666MHz Non-ECC Memory from Dell and further install 32GB another RAM strip from the open market then will 8GB+32GB RAM combination works or not, and what's your suggestion.
@BsianTech4 жыл бұрын
Thanks very much Kirti Singhal for the feedback. I have been doing my best to get my hands on the 7540 but haven't had luck on it yet. As for the RAM, more than likely it will work if it physically fits. Just be mindful if its 2x 16GB stick to make the 32GB. These computers prefer to work in dual sticks (Dual Channel).

Excellent review, Thank you for the best review of precision 7000 series, want to see 7540 review as I am planning to buy 7540. Also, I need your help while selecting the processor between core i7-9750H vs i7-9850H with vPro. It is worth giving $140 extra for vPro. Also which graphic should I choose Intel® UHD Graphics P630 or Radeon Pro WX 3200 w/4GB GDDR5.
@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Punit Singhal, welcome to my videos. I am trying to get my hands on the 7540 myself as it is an interesting one since its specs are like between the 5540 and the 7740. It's closer to the 7740 just 15" and instead of the possible 4 hard drives it is only 3 hard drives in the 7540. So for vPro what it is for IT department to remotely manage the computer. If you are buying this computer personally and there isn't a IT department who does remote management of the computer then vPro won't be use, so its a matter of performance. The performance difference is quite small about 3-5% too small to really feel unless the work you takes long time to process then it will matter. My thoughts are save the $140 and put it into the graphics. So the Intel P630 is just the intergrated graphics which is basic graphics, where as the Radeon is a discrete graphics so be useful, this is where I would put the $140 into instead. I hope that helps you.
@BsianDad Also please suggest me about which graphic should i choose...Radeon Pro WX 3200 w/4GB GDDR5 or NVIDIA Quadro T1000 w/4GB GDDR5

Hi Alisha Francis, sorry I didn’t film the setup process as the the setup process for this computer is the same as every other windows laptop setup process when receiving new. It’s standard Windows Professional out of box setup experience. In terms of raw power and performance the Precision 7740 is the best laptop Dell has to offer.

@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Welcome to my videos Tien Nguyen, learning 3DSMax doesn't mean you need the newest laptop, any application you don't need to have the newest its a matter of balancing the budget you have to spend and the performance and features you require. Even with 3DSMax it does depends on how complex your models and renders are. The Precision 7740 is of course for the upper end of the market with a 17" display. If you on a tighter budget look into the the XPS15 they do well for 3DSMax.

Welcome to my videos SwapPart, LLC. You have ordered quite a beast there! Yes you will see huge improvements in CPU speed my friend. What do you mostly use your computer for? I notice you there wasn't any discrete graphics in your configuration and interested to hear the applications for your computer.

@@BsianTech I chose the Radeon Pro WX 7130 for the graphics. Strange it wasn't on the build list. I'm an eBay seller and I develop my own software for my business. Nothing commercial, just for my personal use. I have a need for an Android app, and my 8 year old laptop with an AMD A8-4500 just isn't suited for it. I'm sure I could have made it work, but not worth the time and frustration. So, this will mostly be for app development. I chose the 4k display because one of the most frustrating aspects of working on my software has always been making them display correctly on a resolution which my old laptop display didn't support. I'm sure this is more powerful than I really need, but I keep things for years. 5 years from now this will likely still be considered fast.

@@BsianTech I've decided I'm going to make some changes since they haven't started it yet. I'm going to reduce the RAM to 8Gb, and switch the graphics to the Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000. Total price is about the same, but the graphics chip is way more powerful. My reasoning is that I can add RAM anytime, and for much less, but I can't change the graphics chip.
@BsianTech4 жыл бұрын
@@SwapPartLLC At first when reading your use and reply I was a bit effiey about going down to 8GB of RAM, I would normally tell people to do min 16GB for App development just because of the virtual space and run environment for it but you stated a very important point to get the better graphics which isn't up-gradable after. You have made a very smart choice my friend! Can't wait to hear your thoughts on this computer when it arrives for you.

@@BsianTech It's much cheaper to buy aftermarket RAM, so I'll most likely have an upgrade ready to go when it gets delivered. Thank you for your replies. I value your input. In the meantime, I was able to get the emulator from Android Studio to run on my current laptop, but it's very slow. I'll just play around with it until I get too frustrated.

Can ı play Pc games with this laptop? Some stupied buggers says its not for pc games you can't 😠
@BsianTech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Mustafa Mülazımoğlu, you can play games on it but this computer was designed for other type of work in mind. The reason why people might say it can't play games is because it doesn't have a Geforce, what it could have instead is the Quadro graphics chip. Nvidia designed the Geforce to be quicker in games where as the Nvidia designed Quadro for large datasets and crunching numbers with error correction and also optimization with leading software companies for professional work. There is a big price difference jump between the Geforce and Quadro (Geforce being cheaper of course). If you are buying a laptop for gaming I would suggest other laptops which you can get cheaper that would have better performance in games then the high price tag of this laptop but to say this laptop can't game well it sure can just maybe for FPS/$ this isn't great in value. Hope this helps =).
