I recently acquired a Dell Precision 5540 (Intel Core i7-9850H, 32 GB, NVIDIA Quadro T2000, final UEFI version) that runs w-a-y too hot (at 100 C+) with high fan RPMs due to the processor's Turbo Boost feature over-responding to every relatively slight demand for more processing power. The solution was to disable Turbo Boost / a de facto Intel sanctioned and temporary, automated overclocking tool that causes short term overheating, random system destabilization and ultimately a service life reduction when mounted into thin laptops whose cooling solution can't keep up to modern hot-running Intel processors. After disabling Turbo Boost, my '5540 now runs as cool & quiet and responsive as it should've in the first place.

@BsianTech4 жыл бұрын
Hi Nyi Nyi Nyan Lin, welcome to my videos. If you have the budget for it go with the Precision 5540 over the XPS 15. The Precision has optimizations for the Autocad and Revit which does enhance the speed and experience compare to the XPS. Secondly the graphics is different, XPS has Geforce and Precision is Quadro. Geforce may sometimes be faster but the Quadro range is for professional software like the two you use, so it is built with error correction meaning more software stability and also can run for hours on end. As for i9 having heating issues well it does a decent job at cooling but the Dell Precision 7540 has way better cooling solution which allows the processor to run even quicker, the downside is it's not as thin and light compare to the 5540. Another factor of the Precision vs XPS is that XPS is built for consumer where as Precision is built for business to handle more physical abuse and designed to run at longer operating hours. Of course for stability and toughness you pay for the premium for Precision over the XPS. I hope this helps your purchase.

@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Shashank Pandey, welcome to my videos. It would depend on the type of data analysis you be doing. If you doing very large data sets then the Latitude has maximum capacity of 32BG and the 5540 has 64GB. If the data analysis software is heavily relying on the GPU then you be looking for something more than the GeForce MX150 in the latitude series. So it all depends on the the person’s type and size of data analysis they perform. The Precision series is to go the next step the latitude series isn’t capable of. Would this make sense I hope if you look at the Precision 7000 series you see they have serious configurations of hardware. Also thanks for the feedback as well :).

Great review, I bought it when it came out 2019 and the battery is crap on this machine even at the 9 cell. I actualy had to replaced the whole computer within a year. Dell would not send me a new one, so they ended up giving me a refurbished model. The battery is also a 9 cell and its not last me more than an hour of use. I do graphic work and some video editing. If I leave the house without the AC adapter, I'm pretty much screwed for the day. It runs really hot after a while and the dual fans are consistantly on. It's a nice machine with good specs, but for some reason it just doesnt hold up well in the long run. Now that time as passed, I'll probably look at an M1 max Apple pro system. Considering the price I paid at the time.. around 3'gs ... The M1 max is a little less with crazy performance and quality parts.
@BsianTech3 жыл бұрын
Thanks @Ruben H, unfortuntely battery life has not improved on the Precision range at all even the newest ones if you working on it hard you be getting an hour on them too. The new M1 are absolute beast on battery life, Apple made a big game changer doing it. I would only ape into the Apple M1 if your applications you use are native to M1 as word of warning, else good computers especially the new M1 max and pro.

The first time the laptop was in warranty and Dell took care of it. Now i have to pay for the replacement.. Anyway, I am looking in to placing a 5540 motherboard in the chassis of a 5520. Dell cannot tell me if this is possible, and i have found no one that has done this before. At a glance the two motherboards look 99% -100% identical, at least from online pictures. I thought this was the wrong keyboard and Dell informed me that the keyboards are windowed to show the light through the letters. Your preview of this model shows what I observed at OfficeMax. Can you tell me if the backlit keyboard has clear windows in the letters to allow light to come through? If not can I order one for this model? Hi Felix Petitt, your observation is correct with the keys are windowed and painted over so when the light goes through the letter itself. Thanks for the review. Looking to buy laptop for data science and ML. Which one to go for Dell Latitude or Precision or any other.
@BsianTech5 жыл бұрын
Hi Gaurav Puri, welcome to my videos.This is pretty easy one to answer. This will all come down to price of what you can afford because the price difference between Latitude and Precision is quite a bit. So first off application being ML what you are after is looking for the fastest GPU to help smash out those calculations as it will be better than the CPU for that, of course still get decent CPU to keep up with the GPU but the fastest GPU you can get hold of is your number one friend. In this department alone any Precision will trample (win) over the fastest Latitude you can spec up which would be the Latitude 5501 (keeping both 15" range) having a GPU of MX150. Just make sure you get a minimum of 16GB RAM, better with 32GB for ML depending on how large the datasets are. I hope this helps with your decision.

Hi E M, the Precision is based off the XPS design you have that correct but Dell has given it a few more options geared towards Professional work. So three major differences is first being processor can go to Xeon on the Precision where as the XPS is only up to i9 if that is even available in that country too. Second the discrete graphics as you pointed out XPS has Geforce range but the Precision is Quadro range for Nvidia (not sure if the RTX graphics is availble for XPS range yet). Last the Precision has professional software optimization available to it even though the XPS has same hardware it isn't made available to XPS. There is of course a big price difference between the two, mainly due to the discrete graphics in the Precision. I hope that might give a little insight on the product =).

Hi Wai Kit Loo, the office productivity, photoshop and day trading isn't going to push for graphics power. As for the autocad viewing if you just viewing I think you be okay without dedicated graphics. If you were designing that's a different matter. Taking all that into account personally I would go with the Latitude 7400, here is the reason the CPU will be quicker which be easier for all your work, even though its lower on RAM, 16GB should be fine for you unless the spreadsheet you working on are insanely large and you will know already if you struggling on 16GB if your machine already has it. The biggest factor I go with the 7400 is the warranty. It will guarantee you will have a laptop for another 4 years where as the 5510 well it could work for a few days or a year or two and then if any part die you are starting to be out of pocket. That $100 difference between the two is the insurance policy you will have a working computer for 4 years (minus any downtime for repairs). I would trade a little speed if there was any from the 5510 to have a working computer, this is the business decision to make sure that $1k is working $1k unit. I hope that helps you.

BsianDad BsianDad man, thank you so much for spending time advising me on this matter. I will go for a Latitude 7400 then. You’re right, the warranty is really a big plus for peace of mind for the following 4 years. Appreciate man 😊👍🏻
