As a Pistons fans, I celebrated when we drafted him. Injuries killed him, but before the injuries, his ability to handle the ball and get to the basket was incredible. Smart player, high IQ, such a shame about his ankle.

@@gladlawson61 The two players at the time that were poised to be huge stars were Grant Hill and Penny Hardaway. Injuries killed both their careers, to the point where neither were the player they could be, perhaps should have been. People forget just how good Grant Hill was back in the day, especially during his time in snowy Detroit. He could have been an all-time great, but sadly he never made it back to the highest of play after his injury after he moved to Orlando.

I don’t usually do the “kids today” bit but here goes. Kids today don’t understand that dunking was more spectacular those days, not because players jumped higher but because it meant the guy went through a defense that was setup so you couldn’t score those kind of baskets. The 3 was an afterthought almost, people were going for the midrange or the transition game or really just look for the big guy. Players like Grant Hill that went to the basket at will were really something special.

Yep. Went from best thing you can do is "dunk in yo face" to cross em up and hit the J. It all changed when Iverson stepped over Lue.

Players back in the day were alot more physical. These twigs today would get snapped easily. These boys don't even crash the boards for rebounds or play defense. For this reason is why subpar players like P.J Tucker, statistically, is still in the league. To his credit, he at least gives effort on the court and could've easily played in the '90s. Guys like him and Jae Crowder will easily get a roster spot somewhere. I will say however that the 3-pter allows today's players to rack up more career points faster than the average players of the past.

Man the 1990's NBA had so much fun game. So much swag and flow. NBA Jam, early 90's hip hop. Starter Jackets. The jerseys like the Orlando Magic, Raptors , Pistons. The colors and styles. The Penny Hardaway sneakers. The basketball cards like Topps Stadium and Upper Deck. NBA Hoops. The old weekend show NBA Inside Stuff and the best times ever with the NBA on NBC and the theme song. I'm not saying the 90's is the best decade in NBA history. I would argue the 80's may have that but the 90's wow. What an era. Was tough, had flash. Had big men playing Center. Hakeem, Shaq, Robinson, Ewing, Mourning, Dikembe. Even the videogames were fun. NBA Live 95, NBA Live 96, NBA Jam, NBA Showtime. Just fun era. Larry Johnson Grandma Ma commercials. The Be Like Mike ones. Lil Penny, even college basketball in the 90/s The 1990 UNLV Runnin Rebels, Michigans Fab 5, UNC, Duke. The 1992 , 94 and 96 dream team. Reggie Miller scoring 8 points in 6 seconds on my Knicks. So much. Then you had the young era of Tim Duncan, Kobe, Allen Iverson that came along. Grant Hill, Penny, Webber, Shaq geez.

I try not to think, these days of players as being 'sad' when their careers have been cut short. When I was younger I was always wondering 'what if' of NBA players I had read about and even players I knew when I played 'what's happened to them'. Hill, Vince, T-Mac and loads more gave me the 'wonder' factor when reading in Slam (that was my only access to NBA). It was the same with local players, what's happened to them! Injuries and the ebb and flow life takes over. It's great to be able to see them play now, how they played back then.

Thing about Isiah was whilst he is one of the greatest PGs ever, he wasn't really liked around the league, and unless you were a Pistons fan, all the other fans hated the Bad Boy Pistons. Isiah is an all-time great player, but he wasn't a cultural superstar like Grant Hill. Everyone loved Grant, he was a clean-cut kid from Duke, who'd won with his college team, his parents were well known and respected in their different fields. Grant also had an electric game that got the fans out of their seats, not just in Detroit, but around the league. Plus he always came across as a nice guy off the court, which endeared him to everyone, whereas Isiah could be prickly with the press when he was upset or mad. Grant has numerous commerical deals with big Sponsors, he was the face of Sprite in the early 90s, he had his own shoe which was really fly. Isiah for his career is obviously a greater player than Grant, no question at all. But Grant was a far greater "star", both in the league and with the fans than Isiah ever was.

He was amazing, and was never one to lose his temper. He was essentially perfect, which is why it felt so much better when my Hogs took down duke at a home game ncaa final. Had no problems rooting for him in the pros tho, was so exciting and rose is saying something a lot of Arkansas players and fans felt. Us and Michigan were called thugs and that we didn’t play basketball correctly. It was a sweet natty in Charlotte over the scum that is Duke

I believe he could have had a chance to be top 5-10 of all time if not for the injuries. I wish he didn’t do 4 years in college. 2 and done would have better served him.

The biggest basketball "what ifs" were: Grant Hill, Anfernee Hardaway, Derrick Rose, Tracy McGrady, Brandon Roy, Ralph Sampson, and Cheryl Miller. All of them were plagued by terrible injuries. Other sports: Bo Jackson, Ken Griffey, Jr.

My favourite player. I don’t think there is anyone who is faster from the perimeter to the rim. One second he was dribbling at the 3 point line, the next he was stuffing it over a big guy. I even got his shoes when I was playing. Replaced the stupid Larry Johnson ones which were rubbish.

From Duke, Grant Hill, Bobby Hurley, and Jason Williams, all heart breakers due to injuries, but at least Grant's were basketball related and he got to prove himself in the NBA.

Grant Hill is a Top 75 NBA Player at 75yrs, if he stays healthy. Grant Hill, to this day, is the greatest player and talent to come out of Duke University. If you had to make an "All Injury NBA" Team that never fulfilled their potential due to Bad Luck, and a lack of Medical Treatments, it would look like this: PG Derrick Rose SG Grant Hill SF Dominique Wilkins PF Ralph Sampson C Arvidas Sabonis ...and they all make the Top 75 at 75 years.
