He was not the best defender when he retired. In fact, while Timmy was always one of the best defenders, I don't know if he was ever the best defender in the league. That's why he never won defensive player of the year. Hakeem was the best defender when he entered the league probably. Then Ben Wallace, when Timmy got old he was no longer the best defender on his team Kawhi was.

Timmy never really spoke out loud about his work ethic or really anything like Kobe did. So Kobe’s Mamba Mentality gets praised so much when Tim Duncan is over here being a silent assassin. Tim was a player that would also take things personally on the court and dominate them like he did with Demarcus Cousins. KG hated that he could never get in Timmy’s head. What other hall of fame top 10 players favorite thing outside of basketball is Dungeons and Dragons😂 and Tim didn’t even start playing organized basketball until he was 14.

I been a Spurs fan since 89 and we always had a pretty good team but in 96 we had our worse season ever. We got Timmy the next year. Im so grateful we got him because he gave me sheer pleasure for dam near 20 years. He was a instant sensation. After we loss to Utah in the playoffs i knew then we was a championship contender and when we won in 1999. Its been a championship mindset every year. Do you know how good that feels to have a team that good for almost 20 years expecting nba title every year? A feeling that i haven't felt in a while now. Usually if your team is ok your just hoping they can make it out the first round or past this team. With the Spurs and Duncan i was expecting nothing less then a nba championship. We got 5 in about 17 years with Duncan. Probably should have won 7 or 8 but hey ill take it. Anyway Duncan will always be the best power forward in my era 😊

This is what I tell kids who were making fun of the Spurs for being bad the past couple of seasons. I would always ask them, "Do you have any idea what it feels like to be the winningest franchise in the NBA for twenty years? That buys you a lot of loyalty with your fans." Really, only the Patriots and Yankees know what that feels like. And the Yankees haven't been in that territory for a long time. And they just do things the right way. Man, I love the Spurs.

@@kevoncoxdirk maybe could’ve, but I don’t think so. Duncan was a 5 tool player, and an unselfish 5 tool player at that. He had incredible defense, rebounding, and played well in pick and roll, played perfectly on the low block, didn’t need the ball in his hands 24/7 to make an impact was a good mid range shooter, could block shots and had an unlimited post bag. He’s criminally underrated, and genuinely I think that no one would’ve been able to replace him I think if you put dirk on that team he would’ve brought more scoring yes but it would’ve taken away shots from Tony Parker, manu and everyone else. Plus dirk wasn’t as impactful on defense as Tim Duncan was. KG was fantastic on defense, and rebounding, but I don’t think he had as deep of a post bag as Duncan did and wasn’t as patient as Duncan was, and I don’t think that spurs system would’ve worked as well with KG there either.

Tim Duncan was an absolute surgeon. He didn't trash talk because the dude didn't have to. He was THAT good. Not only the best PF of all time, but, for my money, one of the top 5 to ever play, period.

Tim averaged 18 pts, 10.7 rebs, and 1.5 blocks in his 13th season. Those were all career-lows, and this all happened BEFORE he won 1 more ring as an aged cornerstone who was still a deciding factor at both ends despite playing less than 30 minutes a game at that point. And let's not forget that he was one historic Ray Allen shot away from being a 6-time champ (and he also missed a 'bunny' as he put it), which is crazy considering the league had already gone small by then.

When have you seen Shaq talk about another player like the inferior player? In my life I just heard him speak like this when he said anything about Duncan. And this to me proves even more how great Tim was and is. Look into the eyes of the players talking about him... Top 5 to me and will always be.

I remember when Duncan, as a college player, went up against Dream Team 2, in an exhibition game. He was freaking impressive, just about the best player on the floor. I shat my pants. KZbin that shit.

Shaq is so right. I love Manu, respect Tony. But Timmy is a true superstar cuz everything revolved around him with no other superstars on his level. He also covers his team defensively. Lebron feared Tim Duncan. I honestly think he knows TD is a more dominant player than he is

My all-time PF and Center would be Duncan and Olajuwon. They would be interchangeable and they are the two post players that could do it all in any era. Defense, Scoring, Rebounding, foot work, quickness, shooting, etc. The best all-around post players to ever play.

Funny story. The summer in-between his first and 2nd year in S.A. He was shopping at the local mall here in San Marcos. My wife, then girlfriend, calls me to tell me he's there at the mall. She worked there as well. I got in my car and burned over as fast as I could arrive. Drive around until I see a small crowd outside of a store. Don't remember which store, I think it was Nike. I get off the car, walk up and he's walking out the door as I get close. I don't know what to say as he exits so the first thing that comes to my mind is..."Tim! Do you remember me?" He looks at me funny, and I say..."I was at one.of your games this year!" He laughs at I ask for an autograph. He signed the back of my shirt. I love telling this story to different fans of his I meet.

Laker fan here Tim Duncan was Me Fundamental. The thug. Is he never rash talked people or was even known for being a heel. He would actually kill ypu with kindness in interviews. Because he was not flashy he did not get the love he deserved. He could be having a quiet game and before you know it, you look up and see he has 25 points 14 rebounds and 7 assists, with 2 blocked shots. He was also a very good free throw shooter for a big man shot at 70 percent. I felt bad when I read he got swindled out of his money. TD was always a classy guy.

As an opposition fan there were always players from around the league you didn't just fear; you dreaded their very presence. Kobe, MJ, etc., you feared them scoring every time they touched the ball. But you dreaded their very presence because the only chance you had against them was to double/triple down on defending them, thereby softening up elsewhere and opening those floodgates. TD was absolutely in that category. His play was highly fundamental, but incredibly difficult to prevent simply because his execution of those fundamentals was so polished it was in the stratosphere. I concur with Barkley: he was likely the best PF that ever played the game, and I consider myself fortunate to have enjoyed (and hated) watching every moment of it.

The man was just so pure in his game that you didn't even realize he had a wild stat line. There were so many games that I'd look up near the end of his game and he had like 30pt 15reb 7ast 2stl 6blk, and you say when did all that happen!
