I was thinking that perhaps she got her PhD and masters from family pressure. If she came from a family of scholars being a singer might feel like it has no honor and to make her father feel better she went for her masters and doctorate so that she wouldn't be a source of shame or disappointment. But what's worse is that this has brought more shame and disappointment on her family especially her father.

On the case of Ilhoon: I know that it is illegal and that SK takes it very seriously, but I do not understand the people who are attacking him, Ilhoon did no harm to anyone, if he harmed someone, it was himself. The case is still being investigated, nothing has been confirmed yet and if it is not confirmed, if this is a mistake, unfortunately he and his group, even if they are not to blame, will carry this weight on their backs and will be remembered for that. I don't know how the law applies in that country, but if it is confirmed, if Ilhoon really did, I hope he will take the consequences as a citizen, pay a fine or do whatever is imposed on him. I'm worried, of course, but that's what can happen to him and the group. Many people are wanting him to leave the group, there are people even burying the BTOB. What makes me sad is that for years, eight years (almost nine) Ilhoon together with BTOB never had a controversy, they were good people and they always wanted to do good with their music. After that happens, they are treating him as if he were the worst person in this world, people who didn't even know him judging him and wanting his evil, even the group. It is a serious matter but the way they are treating him makes it look like he did something monstrous. I repeat, Ilhoon did no harm to anyone, the way they are condemning him is not certain. Ilhoon is an adult man and despite being a public figure, people exaggerate and forget that he is also human. Sorry if my English is not clear, I am not fluent so use the translator, but I hope you can understand what I mean

BTOB healed so many people, can't we support them in their tough times. They created and produced every song with the mindset of providing healing and support to the listeners and never pursued popularity or trend. Their quote is to sell emotions and not albums. Even if they weren't appreciated enough they were happy to see someone finding comfort through their songs and that's all mattered to them. They made everyone laugh but nobody saw their pain. About the weed thing, I think David is correct that at the end of the day, it has nothing to do with the weed itself, but the way the guy made a lot of effort to circumvent the korean law in order to get something that he knows is illegal and that he should be accounted for. I get Danny's comparison with the speeding ticket. It is against the law but people should not lose their job because of it. I agree. But if the dude that went speeding did everything in his power to get rid of the speeding ticket like claiming someone else is driving the car, or bribe the official that caught him or destroy the video evidence that shows he is speeding then damn, that is completely different. There is something wrong with that person already and he needed to know that his actions have consequences.

I literally cannot believe anyone gives a flying fuck about BoA's "scandal." As someone who worked four years in shipping and constantly dealt with international shipments and customs issues/requirements for countries across the globe, I can tell you that that is an obvious customs mistake and not any kind of attempt at smuggling. Things like this happen _constantly_ to both ordinary people and powerful ones; it can be extremely difficult to figure out what kind of information and/or certification customs wants (and where to get it). Many people either don't consult a shipping professional at all, or they speak to one but decide whatever the person says sounds like too much work and take a shortcut. There's also the possibility that the shipping employee is a lazy fuck and doesn't do their job, either accepting a customs form they know is incomplete or not bothering to look up the customs requirements at all (cheers to some of my shitty former employees!). And of course there are times when customs simply decides to be a pain in the ass for no predictable reason. Whatever the case may be, the destination country can wind up doing almost anything as a result: bouncing your shipment right back to you, holding it at customs until you give them the information/certification they want, charging you a fine for fucking up, investigating you for potential shady business, even just throwing your shit in the garbage can and never telling you. Sometimes they even do more than one of these things at once-for example, fining you and holding your shipment while they wait for more information, then just sending it back to you anyway! The South Korean government and law enforcement system knows all of that, or they should. Which means they really must be batshit about drug use to not only open an investigation into such a trifling matter but also _publicly report on it._ To tie this into another topic in the video: I think the discussion about attitudes toward drugs in South Korea is far bigger than marijuana-and this is the actual reason why I agree with Danny's ultimate point. The problem arises when the public-and even law enforcement-jump to certain conclusions in virtually Pavlovian fashion. They hear the word "drugs" and their minds immediately go to "this person broke the law and they are guilty." It doesn't matter if that drug is a legal one or whether it was genuinely smuggled or not. It doesn't matter if the accused individual is actually ruled innocent (Park Bom, Wonho). It doesn't matter how frequently or rarely the drug use occurred or how long ago it was. The media will treat it with the same disgust, employers will treat it with the same paranoia, and even if it's just a passing thought, the GP will treat it with the same disdain.

I dont know if korea does this, but if they’re gonna treat weed as a crime and putting it up at the same shelf as more harmful drug usage, they should include counseling with treatment...

See the unrealistic expectations for idols, is absolute perfection. Doing anything otherwise causes an uproar, suddenly everyone is dragging your name to the dirt and not just for a week or months. Some of the hatred can go on for years, in extreme cases until the idol commits s*icide. Then there's those who suddenly turns a new leaf in those extreme cases, where they now love that idol because they're gone.

She truely is a fun and kindhearted human being. I believe she didn’t do it, because she herself wanted to pull a image like that. I feel like it was more a family pressure thing. That being said, I do think she (, her father and the university) deserves whatever punishment is designated for plagiarizing a master thesis. what i don't understand is why people are saying that hong jinyoung shouldn't be worried about something that doesn't involve her career. the thing is, idols and artists and entertainers go to university for their degrees as a backup plan as well. some people aren't idols forever, some people don't stay in the entertainment business forever. what if she got married and had children and decided to pursue the career she studied for? it very much does affect her career, especially because now if she does leave the entertainment business, she can't pursue that career without going back and spending more years in university to get a fair degree, if she doesn't get blacklisted from schools or something. idk how plagiarism works when you're caught, i always wrote fair and original essays.

@yahya john There are so many studies that contradict the statement "leagalizing marihuana only leads to worse drugs". No, legalizing means that people have access to safer marihuana use, ie. it wouldn't be laced with other drugs to attempt to addict people to stronger drugs. Maybe instead of making drugs illegal, countries should focus on providing better healthcare, and in Korea's case that means destigmatizing mental illnesses. This has nothing to do with idols/idol worship, and everything to do with effectivly and accurately provinding information to people so that they can make informed decisions about their health. In fact, just take a look at the opioid epidemic in the US. People are hooked on heroin because of LEGAL, perscription drugs, like vicoden. Meanwhile there have been some studies that show marihuana can alleviate pain and does not cause the same drug dependency as opiates.

i think ilhoon should get a good lawyer and go on and accept the charges so he’ll get a shorter sentence. imo narcotics, opioids, and stronger more addictive hallucinogens (like cocoaine) are more dangerously addictive and riskier than marijuana. like people don’t realize that anything that alters you normal state of being is a drug. alcohol is a drug, tobacco (nicotine)is a drug, caffeine is a drug. i’m pretty sure you will come in contact with someone with a caffeine addiction more often than one with marijuana “addiction”. honestly (speaking from a western pov) the demonization of marijuana in the west stems from its association with the black and latinx communities and drugs that are actually addictive and killing white people (opioids) are labeled as safer and even marketable. they get so many ads on tv. but nobody really is ready for that discussion. but anyway my point is drugs are everywhere and we shouldn’t be quick to demonize users of marijuana especially when u actually have acquired knowledge about it and what drugs are in general. okay i’m done.

I mean, I totally get the pressure HJY felt. My father is one of the most referred senior professors in my university, my grades were good and I got a lot of awards and scholarships, but even then people always questioned me of my studies. It got to the point where I was so depressed and spent literally years for writing my thesis when I've finished all of my mandatory and tons of extra credits with good grades way before. I love studying, but by the time I was writing my thesis, my career was on full swing and I got poached by a big company as I won an award which was considered a big deal in my university. Everyone, and I mean, everyone, kept reminding me to finish my studies and not to bring shame to the family. Be it my faculty's professor who's my father's best friend, my attending professor who was my father's former assistant, even my gossipy professor who was just someone who knew my family background kept telling me that I should not forsaken my studies and to graduate fast. I never had any problem with my studies before and had been balancing well even though I already built my career since I started college, but after all that the pressure just came pouring down. It got to the point where I got into clinical depression, had panic attacks, had to go on therapies, AND I for some reason just couldn't (or wouldn't) complete my thesis for YEARS, longer than the time it took for me to finish my classes. Thesis was really just a formality for me, but I literally became the oldest student in campus bringing shame to my family. I was way ahead than my friends when I just got into school, but now I'm already way behind because of how I was stuck back then. But still, even in that situation, my father would much rather have me dropped out than to have me plagiarize others' works or do other unethical means for me to graduate. I ended up transferring to another university because I couldn't stand the pressure. He would have disowned me if I were to plagiarize others' works or had my thesis done by others. From what HJY had done, it was clear that she got her thesis done by paying others (it's quite common actually, the service usually just rewrite old thesis with new titles). It's too bad she didn't even admit that because anyone with enough experience would know that you won't get 70+% plagiarism rate if you only use 'references' without copying-pasting, no matter how much of them you use 😂

I hope you are well now and ready. I am in my thesis time rn and just took comps. I liked HJY as a performer and tv personality but I sadly believe the rumors thrown to her now are very true. She did accept the decision tho and gave up her degrees. I believe it's one way of admission to what you have done. Because if you weren't guilty, you'll fight your way through something you have worked so hard for. I just sincerely wish she will bounce back better after the scandal. I also wish you well in life rn.

I think hypocrite should be a synonym for some kpop fans. People blame knetz most of the times but people complaining are International fans then you say Knetz are sensitive but if you compare the comments kpop fans are the ones criticizing kpop idols. Stop thinking a kpop idol can not make a mistake just because IIhoon was found guilty doesn't mean he can't change I am 101% sure if it was your neighbour you would not have abused and cussed him/her/they y'all really blame only Kpop idols as if they murdered your friends. Kpop idols and celebrities are humans let them enjoy.

THE FACT THAT NOONE IS ASKING WHY HE BOUGHT WEED IS JUST 😬 like ya'll dont realize idols are still human? They're constantly overworked, underpaid, under stress and pressure yet people SHAME on them for using methods to relieve the pain? Ilhoon did not hurt anyone, the only victim here is him and K- Nets are more concerned about law instead of his well being. If I was him, I'd do the same tbh. Edit: The way some of ya'll bash on BTOB/ Ilhoon more than actual sexual offenders and racists in the industry is just funny to me 🤭 But we just not ready for that convo yet. Oh and no, I'm not defending his actions, I'm calling him out for this bs people call "justice". He deserves to receive punishment by law not from Netizens :) (please don't fight in the comments, let's have civil discussions 💜)

LOL I agree but I don't. There are definitely more people in Korea that work harder than him, so according to your logic, are they justified to do weed and commit a crime since they have to relieve stress? Also the fact that there are other and more effective ways to relieve stress. I agree he should't get blamed too much, but stop trying to justify what he did, since at the end, crime is a crime, and that shouldn't be excused.(Think about all other hardworkong citizens who abide the law)

Living in the netherlands it feels so unreal to me that ppl actually end up in jail or get high vines for using marihuana.. like im not a user myself, but i could buy it here in special ''coffee shops'' if I wanted to. its open to the public here and offcourse there are good and bad sides on this but putting ppl in jail and destroy their whole career just because they smoked a joint goes a little to far from my point of view. Im aware im from a different culture but it seems so harsh imo.

@chromaticcanuck, FYI, the legality of something is not determined by how harmful it is. That being said, I don't get your intention of claiming that Marijuana shoudn't be a crime since it is less harmful than alcohol and nicotine. To add on, whatsoever is your perception of marijuana, most importantly, it is a law that marijuana is illegal, and you should respect laws, as they are meant to abide. You said if its kept away from children it will be safe, however, when marijuana will be legalized, from children to teenagers, they will eventually be exposed to Marijuana, since it is very hard to control the usage, once legalized. For example, 20% of teenagers in America use Mauritania, and the significance here is, marijuana during youth causes permanent brain damage. Korea is a drug free country, recording nearly 0% marijuana usage among teenagers, and I don't want 20% of our youth to have brain damages.
