To be fair, there's a lot of appropriation/disrespectful imitation going on in the kpop/khiphop community and you don't see rappers give so much credit to the legends of American hip hop. BTS have shown respect to the genre and those who left a big print on it from the beginning and the more they matured as ppl, the more they learned about it, instead of acting like they knew it all.

Smarts do not equal intelligence, and intelligence plays a big part in one's behaviour. It's absolutely possible for people to appreciate and respect the culture, and the black community would of course have different opinions on appropriation in different forms, meant to emulate the aesthetic and/or energy of their culture. The important questions are whether the appropriation is well motivated, whether it is carefully considered and whether it's creative. Because if it's a negative to all these questions, well, it is a disrespectful imitation and is an unnecessary, unproductive appropriation of culture.

J-Hope always amazes me because he learned how to rap later on through RM and SUGA, but his flow and skills are amazing. He was definitely born to be a rapper. If you guys are interested, whenever an album drops RM always goes on live and does a behind on it where he shows his guide tracks and the production process. man, even in this song j-hope names several rappers and groups that influenced him as a rapper, like you can hear Kendrick Lamar influence in his style more than namgi, those rappers were his MAIN influence and in the dorms apart from namgi there were several other trainee rappers with whom he participated in rap battles. He mainly taught himself, stop assigning his rapping prowess to namgi. Jung Hoseok learned by himself, by his own hard work and worked out his own unique style.

We try not to say he learned how to rap from Suga and RM, more like Suga and RM helped him hone in on a skill that had been with him all along. Supreme boi also helped him as well (one of the reasons he went to supreme boi for his mixtape, he's good friends with him and he helped him hone in on his rapping.) I think the other replies to this comment were a bit stand offish, and were exaggerated. Hobi even gives credit to Suga and RM for helping him so it's not "Not true at all" as someone said. It's just that when talking about how Hoseok learned to rap more intently- we should choose more careful words to not give off the idea that Hobi had no clue what rapping was. He was a street dancer, of course he knew rap and hip hop. As to the claim it was a senior who helped him... it was RM, Suga, and Supreme boi. Most of the other trainees were always busy and focused on them and Hobi even said out of the 9 that were there at the time, Suga was the first he talked to. On top of that- Suga, RM and Supreme Boi were the only ones to really 'hang out' with Hobi back then. He's talked about that in the past. Just thought I'd clear that up, and I hope those other comments didn't tear you down. Your comment was good, just needed to be worded a little differently. 💜

It was one of the few articles back then. Also, please reread my statement. My daughter just recently showed me the episodes of back when BTS was new and went to Los Angeles, their first time in America, and spent a couple weeks with Coolio!!!!! He literally spent time educating them on the history of American Rap and teaching them how to Rap. That's why they have so much respect with American Rappers. They are incredible people. ❤❤

One of the reasons BTS is so popular is because they are one of the very few Kpop groups that appreciate, acknowledge and pay homage to Black Artists/Music because Kpop was essentially created to appeal to western audiences and more specifically incorporate Black music, which is why nowadays every group has a "rapper" even though they aren't really rappers, or auditioned to be vocalists. Most Idols just try to be black and Companies (especially SM Entertainment) have black writers/producers but never celebrate them meanwhile BTS appreciate black/rap & hip hop culture which is one of the many reasons BTS triumphed over everyone else.

There is something about this song that brings me to tears everytime I hear it and when suga comes in my pulse races and my heart jumps with excitement I get short of breath it is something about his lyrics in this song that hit me on a level no other song hits me on and I tear up and I get emotional and I've never had that kind of visceral feel for a song ever in my life this is what I consider a masterpiece of the rap line and it's just them telling their truth and showing you their truth about their passion and love for the rap for the lyrics for the style they're not trying to copy they trying to pay homage and respect to those who came before that help them find their path. I think it is important today for young people to become more educated about the notion of cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation where the debate is still open even among experts. Born in the 1980s in the United States with the rise of postcolonial studies, the concept of cultural appropriation describes the use, by members of a dominant culture, of cultural elements produced by members of a dominated culture. According to some experts, it is a notion that is bound to evolve in the sense that some consider that a person born and raised in a dominant culture cannot claim to be from the dominated culture, regardless of his or her skin color or distant origin. According to Prof. Catinca Adriana Stan, cultural appropriation is of several types, and distinguished four categories: 1- The cultural exchange where there is a reciprocity. Everyone wins in this exchange. (In this case, we can say today that we also find Asian and Oriental influences in American sounds) 2- Cultural domination, where a stronger culture tries to impose itself over another. 3- The cultural exploitation which is economic. It is a question of taking elements and valorizing them for the benefit of the dominant culture. 4- Transculturation where we no longer know which source of influence or origin has given us a product. In the case of Kpop, we can indeed speak of transculturation when the artist does not recognize or reveal the origin of his inspiration. In this case, BTS are really an exception since long before their beginning, they never hid their influence of black American music, by exposing pictures of their influences in their studio, by giving them credit in their music from their 1st album and several times afterwards, by quoting them in their interviews as being their ultimate inspiration, and by working with artists coming from this culture (HipHop artists, Black marching band, Black Gospels, songwriters, producers. ), and most importantly being open to criticism, apologies for offenses and education. Unfortunately this is not the case for many other Kpop idols As for the cultural exploitation, Appropriation by non-white people towards white people is not possible. But can non-white people be guilty of cultural appropriation of one another? This is a question worth asking because in recent years, many voices have been raised to denounce the cultural appropriation of non-white celebrities towards non-Western cultures. This is the case of the singer Beyoncé who was criticized for the video "Hymn for The Week-End" with the group Coldplay, released in 2016, clip in which she wears a traditional Indian outfit. Recently, it was the singer Bruno Mars, of Puerto Rican and Filipino origin, who was accused of appropriating black American music with his latest album "24K Magic", which won Album of the Year at the Grammy Awards. Some people think that it is impossible for a person from a non-Western culture to appropriate another non-Western culture because of the lack of dominance. On the other hand, others believe that there are logics of oppression and privilege between non-white people that make cultural appropriation possible. This difference of opinion demonstrates that the concept of cultural appropriation is not immutable and that its definition is likely to evolve over time. In this case I prefer to refer to Pr Helga Elisabeth Bories-Sawala who said "Taking a symbol considered sacred in one culture and using it in another context can have very different meanings", It can have a negative connotation like mocking the culture, but it can also be used in a context of appreciation, and of course one must always give credit and acknowledge the influence, or even give it the benefit of the gains that can be made from this use. There are many examples of cultural exploitation in the fashion industry. Designers like to innovate and come up with cutting edge designs. This starts to be a problem when they draw their inspiration from or borrow elements from non-Western cultures. This is what happened in 2012 when the lingerie brand Victoria's Secret had one of its models wearing a Native American headdress. Many members of the Native American communities were offended, considering that the brand was disrespecting their culture and was guilty of cultural appropriation by diverting from its original meaning an essential element of their cultures. And unfortunately, this also happens in Kpop where sometimes sacred elements (objects, styles, lyrics) of Indian, African, Muslim culture have been used in totally inappropriate and disrespectful contexts, without even giving credit to the cultures or even apologizing after the criticism. I won't name the artists to avoid fanwars, but in my opinion there is indeed cultural appropriation in Kpop that manifests itself in the form of exploitation and transculturation. The line is very blurry between cultural appropriation and cultural appreciation, but when inspiration and influence is not acknowledged, or culture is used in a disrespectful way, it is definitely appropriation whether you come from a dominant or dominated culture; being an influential public figure takes away any immunity in my opinion. And I admit that in this context, BTS have a very exemplary attitude that should inspire some of their compeers, all nationalities combined.

Words, dances, singing styles, food, fashion, litterally e v e r y t h i n g starts somewhere in one country and then spreads all over the world and works itself into other countries/languages/cultures, that's how it's always been and always will be. The latin/roman alphabet is whats used for writing most western languages, should every country have made their own? Should only italians be allowed to sing opera? As long as people from other countrys make it their own and don't pretend to be from the US writing lyrics like they are from there I don't see how it's different from any other singing style or any other thing we get influenced by. If you grow up listening to hip hop and US rappers it doesn't matter if you live in the US or Korea, that is what you will be inspired by.
