I have a master's degree in classical music, and it really irritates me when people call some music "low quality" just because it's different from what they're used to considering "good". The artistry, technical skill, ingenuity, and emotional and intellectual depth of BTS's music all lead me to consider it "high-quality" music. I think the main reason why so many people, especially middle-aged Western men, have such a negative view of boy-bands is because Westerners are used to viewing it as music for young people, especially young women, and they don't want to believe that young people (especially women) could appreciate the artistic depth of something more than they can.

I grew up on classical music, my father played classical piano, it is my first love. There are some BTS songs that fill my heart the same way my father's playing used to (may he RIP). They make beautiful and thoughtfully composed songs. Even if their sound isn't your taste the quality cannot be argued. I actually pity this man, he obviously doesn't know the joy of music at all.

You don't like BTS? Fine. You think they dress like girls? Fine. You think they look like girls? Fine. But the one thing you have to admit is that they make the most high quality music I and a lot of people have heard in years. You don't get a Cultural Merit Medal making low quality music. You don't get to speak at the UN making low quality music. You don't built up such a dedicated and loving fanbase making low quality music. Therefore, the statement that BTS makes low quality music is just blatantly untrue.

Jung Ayna compared to which groups or singers? Just because their music is popular and catchy their quality is less than others? Really so mainstream people have no taste in music? So tired of people commenting about who's music is better quality. If you don't have listeners then maybe the music isn't good enough? Music is only good if people listening to it respond to it and want to listen more. As long as there are people enjoying their music to them BTS music is high quality. I don't other kpop music is better. It's to each his/her own.

I'm from Argentina. I started being an ARMY in 2016, before that I knew NOTHING about South Korea, about their culture, history or language. Right now, I know how to read hangul, I did research about Korea's history, and I wish that someday I can visit the country. Everything was because of BTS, because I wanted to understand them and their culture. I think that a lot of people is not conscious about the phenomenom that BTS is and how because of them young (and not so) people is interested in Korea.

I don't know why, but after hearing you defend BTS and putting into words what I've always wanted to tell anyone who called BTS a low-quality boy band just made me shed tears. Actually, I guess I do know why. After being a fan for a long time and now seeing their messages for the youth being written off as typical pop music, it makes my heart shatter. I understand that people aren't obliged to read and interpret the lyrics and people are entitled to their opinions, but I think the least you can do before you judge the quality of a song is to look at the lyrics, message, and effort put into it. The members of BTS may not be the most musically refined artists to ever walk on this Earth, but they have powerful messages for their fans and that's something rare these days. BTS has come a long way since their debut and seeing their music, messages, and personalities blossom and mature over the years is something truly inspirational. As you said, music is no longer solely for the ears. It is consumed by the ears, heart, eyes, smell(?), and brain. BTS developed a complex story with underlying messages and among an industry of commercialized music, they put their personal stories into the world. I think that in this industry, their willingness to go above and beyond makes their music truly refined in a way that cannot be ignored.

I read Demian because of BTS, I started dancing because of Jimin (I hate exercise so it's a healthy life decision as well). BTS has brought my eyes onto worldwide problems and expanded my vision on the society. And I'm a 16 year old. Come to think about how much influence they have on a million other teens. I disagree with you regarding this KZbinr's commentary. Please, recall when BTS and other KPop Groups traveled to America and were interviewed by the media, they were asked the same lame questions over and over again by so-called American Journalists (except Zach, Jimmy Fallon and few others) like, "Who's your favorite American actress? Would you ever do an album in "English?"...etc. Not once did any of them ask them about the Korean Culture or Language or how they want their music to affect society as a whole. In the midst of all of that, BTS showed class and character (which are traits that I find are valuable and held in high regard in the Korean Culture). BTS and other KPop Groups (EXO, Twice, BlackPink, Ikon and the list goes on) exemplify true talent, humility, sincerity and passion which is lacking with a lot of American Artists. These young men and women put in a huge amount of time, effort, "Blood, Sweat & Tears" into this and to say that BTS are "McDonalds" is very disrespectful. I have always been interested in Korean, Japanese, Taiwanese, Chinese and other Eastern cultures. I was introduced to BTS in 2016 during the Wings Series when I heard a snippet of Blood, Sweat & Tears. I watched this video and I was captivated because I hadn't seen anything like them since Michael Jackson. This lead me to not only want to watch more of their videos but, I wanted to know more about the Korean Culture. They allowed us a peek into their everyday lives and helped me and others realize that we are the same! We make look different; but, we go through the same mental, health, economic and educational issues! BTS deserves the many blessings and accolades they've received recently (& there's more to come!). Everyone has a right to their opinions. Maybe he should have done a better job with his delivery. Cause if his intentions were to "educate" Koreans about how to communicate with people from other countries who come are visiting Korea, he should "educate" Americans how to communicate with people from other countries, also.

They might not be promoting hangul nor the korean culture directly through interviews, but BTS helped put South Korea on the map and attracted attention towards the country. They have caused people like you and me, who are non-korean citizens, to gain an interest in the country and the culture there. Therefore, they have indirectly helped spread korean culture by becoming global artists.

He shouldnt compare an American being proud of McDonald's and Korean being proud of BTS. Too different. When one is born and live in a country mostly consist of one nation it is understandable to have nationalistic pride. Because you are raised and educated with that pride. Most small countries have that nationalistic pride. USA is not one nation. Comparing to many countries long history, US has a short history and made out of many nations and cultures and states. He sounds just fed up with exaggerated enthusiasm for a music group he can't identify with. Besides their music, the amount of touristic boost BTS gives to their small country's economy is enough to be proud of. Don't be bitter and move on.
@MLC92
@MLC92 5 жыл бұрын
That is the same thing I thought when I watched the video. I think it also applies for small countries, we take pride in pretty much anything that gives us international exposure haha. US is very different BC most countries have some level of exposure to their culture. Like, when asking people where they are from (in a very international gathering) most just say their country, but I noticed Americans often say their city/state instead. I know it is a small thing but it does show that they expect others to know what Iowa or Tennessee is, for example.

I feel like people see the label of 'boyband' and instantly feel the need to distance themselves to prove some kind of elitism or 'good music sense' or something idk. First of all music elitism needs to die, it's absolutely ridiculous. If it makes someone else happy it's valid, even if it doesn't fit your own personal opinion of 'good'. Second, I really do feel that no one is doing it like BTS at the moment. They aren't just creating music anymore but a whole experience. I haven't heard of anyone else stringing all their albums together and creating a whole storyline over the years. They release their music with a purpose and not just for the sake of it. Also, they sing about real personal matters, their own and problems we face in society and in life. They also focus on us being our own saviours and them being our support system as much as we are their's. They really help you grow as a person. Even if you aren't a fan of BTS or Kpop or pop in general, you can't help but respect the work that they do.

I mean a random korean approaching me and asking, do you know hangul, the korean alphabet? Doesn't sound any better, so wth is his point? I actually learn alot of the korean culture without even me noticing because of bts. So korean having bts as the nations pride is quite reasonable, because they make people around the world aware of the korean culture, at the same time producing great music. And American people surprisingly is very welcome with bts, one time I was talking with my cousin who lives in california and I didn't even brought up bts because I know its not her thing, but she's the one who brought it up herself, saying how everyone knows them in the US, so yeah I think bts just effortlessly promotes korean culture as well, you could add that to the list of great things they done

I’m language teacher for adults. I have many cultures represented in my classes, and I’d never belittle an aspect of someone’s culture in this manner. I’m surprised a teacher would do so so vehemently and publicly. This gentleman is incredibly short-sighted, and does not truly understand BTS’s global, cultural, and economic impact. My son has Aspergers. A symptom of this is an intense, narrowly focused interest in often obscure topics. His interest since 2012 has been BTS and Korean culture. He would NEVER have discovered Korean culture without them. Through him, our entire family became interested in Korean music, culture, food, etc. I mentioned I’m a language teacher- I’m already bilingual and now, have learned to read Hangul and am practicing Korean **because of** BTS. I can almost guarantee I’d never have become interested in Hangul otherwise. Perhaps this man should’ve thought his entire argument through first before making his remarks-but I find it’s **always the middle-aged white dudes who want to lecture everyone else about what they should/shouldn’t do, wear, say, and like. 💁🏻‍♀️ Sorry, Mr. Caucasian man. You don’t get to tell Koreans who/what they are allowed to discuss. Stick to teaching English. Skip the commentary.

Stephanie Turro ... Your comment is one of the best I have read so far. I am a 61 year old American who happens to enjoy listening to Kpop, in particular to BTS. My favorite genre of music is Country; however, not everyone is keen towards that type of music. Several years ago I came across some Kpop music videos and at some point I stumbled upon BTS early in their career. There was just something extra about them and their music that struck a chord within me. I started to listen more to their music, in particular to their song lyrics, along with learning a little bit about them: who they were and how they got to where they were today. Through them a spark was born...I wanted to learn more about their Korean culture including their language along with wanting to try some of their Korean dishes. I even started to watch K-Drama shows (with English subtitles). Unfortunately, this teacher is very short-sighted and close-minded. He only looked on the surface and since it “did not fit” into what his definition of music he felt the need to make a comparison. However, as a teacher he should encourage his students to learn about the world around them...finding a common ground would be a good place to start. What is undeniable is how BTS, a group of seven young men, broke records and made ground-breaking news. Where they started and how they are today shows how much sacrifice and effort they have put into their work and getting their message out.

I'm sorry David & Danny I'm going to go into a little rant in your comment section lol. The thing that irked me about the guy's video isn't him saying that BTS is low quality. Opinion is opinion, so I understand not everyone is going to like them. It's the fact that he had the audacity to compare people to food. He literally compared people to inanimate objects. He compared breathing, thinking people, to hamburgers & french fries. As someone who's an immigrant into North America, it makes me think that he sees the inanimate (like language) as the only thing that makes a culture. For me, culture is based on at least 5 different things. People, history, tradition, language, and food. In that order. I wholeheartedly believe that PEOPLE are the core of what makes a culture. For a culture to exist you NEED someone to start it. Uphold it. To take pride in it. And Bangtan has done exactly that. They have never strayed away from their roots no matter how deep into the West they went, and have given people in the West reason to look further than what's in front of their nose. So what's wrong in taking pride in people, when those people are giving your culture a chance to be explored? To be learned? And to be loved? Rant over. My apologies once again lol. Thank you for being levelheaded, and saying exactly what you said.

*THE GUY LEFT A RESPONSE on my comment on how he got it wrong before this video.* And he still seemed lost. It ended up LENGTHY but was worth it. Please expand to see how it went. *------- MY COMMENT 1/2 -------* *If you want to discuss culture, try to see it with different perspectives.* Sure, Kpop is not for everyone and bragging about it might look embarrassing. But you don't need to mock it because you *THINK* it's low-quality. Plus, the idea that Hangul is the best alphabet in the world is subjective. Look dude, do you even realize how hard you tried to make a nonsense video... *You've made a STATEMENT out of a "gut-feeling" opinion.* It only makes me cringe that those cynical 'woke' Koreans agree with you in the comments shouting butthurt Kpop fans are coming to get you. Not being a nationalistic guy, let me quote exactly what you said to prove how wrong your monologue was. _"This is something that's not easy to define."_ _"BTS is kind of low quality music, I'm sorry to say."_ _"I would have to say they're kind of low-quality. It's kind of low quality music."_ _"The point of this video is not to shit on BTS."_ *You admitted that personal preference is a SUBJECTIVE issue* *but seconds later you just branded one as "low-quality."* Even exemplifying the band as "a shitty boy group" to "give some context," you audaciously said "the point of this video is not to shit on BTS." I was amazed by how legit it sounds to make your point. _"If you want to talk about high-quality music, we got like Mozart and Beethoven."_ _"Even there's some modern bands that I would consider high-quality music like..._ _Radiohead, or... I don't know... Like Jimi Hendrix or... Something like that."_ Funny you mentioned Radiohead and Beethoven here. *But what gives you a reason to bash on something which you don't understand?* *Have you ever even bothered to look at their lyrics and see how they would resonate with other people?* Overlooking is always easy. _"Imagine if me as an American, you know, I'm in Korea and I meet a Korean person I say,_ _like, "Hey you know what's awesome about America? McDonald's!" And I get this big pride in me..."_ _"You know McDonald's is the most popular restaurant in the world!_ _Isn't that amazing?! Isn't that cool? America is awesome!"_ _"That's the kind of feeling we get."_ Who do you think you're to say "That's the kind of feeling *WE* get"?? What an arrogant move from a person who talks about cultures. You also completely neglected a geological factor on this matter: *How a small, non-English-speaking country has made such an impact* *to the rest of the world in pop culture for the last years.* *Yet, fueled by a subjective rationale, all you had to do was mocking with stretching facial muscles.* Shameful. _"But we have this gut feeling which is McDonald's is low quality food."_ _"And BTS is kind of low-quality music, I'm sorry to say."_ Ah, so you're trying to put some sort of music in the same line with an obesity-creating food chain. I would understand though, if any music on earth actually causes cancer or something. Solid analogy worth making it as the title? Kind of low-quality, I'm sorry to say. _"And I think that breaks my heart about this is that there is something to be very proud of as a Korean._ _There is a very Korean nationalistic pride worthy thing. And that's Hangul."_ _"If we're the only conscious living things in the universe Hangul is the best alphabet in the universe."_ _"Korean people don't really take pride in Hangul and that breaks my heart."_ Switching the subject and praising the superiority of Hangul... Everyone would agree that Hangul deserves a better place when introducing Korea. *But the thing is, it's another self-centered claiming that it's the best alphabet among every language.* *Ironically, you're being the nationalist.* *Understandable* - Your Korean friend telling your American friend "BTS is cool!" *Narrow-minded* - Your American friend being like "This is what Korea is proud of?" *Nice* - You jumping in and explaining how great Hangul is *Note* - Bringing up pop culture is probably more fun at parties than talking about languages _"I hope that Korean people can feel a little more proud about other parts of Korean culture."_ I get the bottom line. You might have wanted to create a bit of stir, making those debates among communities. But too bad that it'll be made by such a flimsy video. I suggest getting a proofreader for your script next time. *------- OP'S RESPONSE in the comment below -------* *------- KZbin won't let me put the whole thread (maybe bc it's too long) -------*
@mastahand

*------- OP'S RESPONSE 1/1 -------* I don't particularly want to get into Internet arguments about this stuff, but I do want to give the other perspective. If you'd like to make a video in response to this one, I would be happy to put it up on my channel. The video can be in English or Korean. Especially answering what is narrow-minded, and why is criticizing an aspect of a culture immediately narrow-minded? Is it ever okay, or not narrow-minded, to criticize some aspect of a culture? Can you give an example of something culturally that is not narrow-minded to criticize and why it's not narrow-minded to criticize that, but it is narrow-minded to criticize BTS? It would be good to hear why my analogy with McDonalds food fails. I understand that McDonalds food is not good for you, but I would say that a lot of artistically, objectively, high quality food is also probably pretty bad for you, and that when you judge the objective quality of some piece of art, it's impact on one's health shouldn't be taken into consideration. Could you please answer the more difficult question of, is there an objective value to art or is it all purely subjective? Somehow I would say Mozart's Requiem has some objective quality to it that makes it better than N'Sync's Bye Bye Bye, despite the fact that I enjoy listening to Bye Bye Bye more than Mozart's Requiem. Anyway, I'd like to get some dissenting opinion, and I know it's a pain in the butt to make a video, but if you have some time and can just shoot a video (even just from your laptop or phone) I'd be glad to put it up. It's really my intention to show Korean people what some foreigners may think on certain subjects about Korea, because I feel like youTube and Korean media is full of foreigners praising all aspects of Korea. Even if someone doesn't agree with what I have to say, I think it's good for them to hear it because it can better sharpen their views as to why I'm wrong. I really appreciate the time and thought you put into your comment, and I hope to give your thoughts and opinions a platform as well! *------- MY COMMENT 2/2 -------* *You know what, all of your questions are already answered elsewhere.* You're a KZbinr... With all due respect, please care to read and watch them. I appreciate your offer but I don't see any need for making a video for you. If you need more explanations after seeing this and other parts of the internet including this comment section, you should consider quitting commentaries on a culture. Let's start off by breaking down your logic. *_BTS = Popular but low quality = McDonald's → Nationalistic pride? Cringeworthy_* *_→ Why not other great things → Like Hangul the Best_* Apparently, a majority of viewers can't quite catch up with your thought process but only have been left scratching their heads after watching your video. I want you to know that it's not 'omg how dare you hate our oppas' kind of situation here. It's absolutely okay to be subjective and critique things that are beloved by many. In fact, I endorse you to challenge them. But be aware that this backlash you're getting right now is NOT just because you did so. It is because, *your reasoning was weak enough to jeopardize your whole point of "BTS is McDonald's."* To put it simply, you flopped on so many levels that it made you look like a troll... 1. The unhealthy image of McDonald's contradicts positive undertone in songs of BTS. If you're talking about layers of thoughts, many people - not just their fans - have been impressed by how deep some of their lyrics are. *It would've been a little more plausible if you targeted Kpop industry in general.* But I guess you were too hungry for views... 2. While your metaphor remains questionable, *you ridiculed someone else's pride because you think it sucks.* *That alone, leaves much to desire for a KZbinr who wishes to tell about cultures "truthfully."* But what I can understand is that, set aside all the pro's, you could think they are too shallow and too 'gay.' It leads to another question of being "narrow-minded" and "subjective." 3. *_Okay so, you CAN be proud of BTS then how about Hangul?_* *_You gotta be more proud of it cuz it's greater than Kpop!_* You see, from a 'profound' standpoint, many more people would agree that 'Hangul is more pride-worthy than Kpop." But from a 'sensational' standpoint, they would be divided into two groups for "which is more pride-worthy?" That's how *different STANDARDS by different people* work. And I would say that those criteria are hugely played out in 'a degree of consensus.' Which explains why Mozart is regarded more 'high-class' than NSync. I hope this briefly answers to your question about "objective and subjective values to art." If you still want me to elaborate, I seriously hope you to just go google it because I'm not here to write a freakin dissertation for you. 4. *If you look down on others' standards, not willing to take it from their perspective,* saying like, "Is THAT what you're proud of? How sad!" or, "Look, here's Hangul and you chose to promote THAT over it!?" *congratulations you are narrow-minded and you can keep getting disliked.* You don't become a narrow-minded person "immediately" when you just criticize anything including BTS. You become one when you do it wrong. It breaks my heart how confident you were in this speech... Thanks for the reply.

@@mastahand Wow. Not only did this guy not think about the content of this particular video, it seems like he just has an entire mindset that needs some reconsideration. He has so many inate biases that he's never bothered to think about. He has the music bias (classifying one type of music over another--and let me just add that using classical music as an example of the "highest class" of music is such a white person thing to do and proves having a very outdated, stale viewpoint--and I say this as an older white person). He has the cultural superiority bias. The confirmation bias (I talked to my friend back in the west and we laughed about these Korean's silly pride in a "boyband"--we both agreed it was ridiculous). And the generational bias to name a few. Thank you for your post. Very interesting to see how flawed not just this video but his overall logic is. i know this was made over a year ago but i need to rant. BTS didn’t go through all those hardships, being mistreated, getting false accusations, starting from the lowest of the lowest, training extremely hard, go through personal problems, they didn’t write all those meaningful lyrics that have helped MILLIONS of people, they didn’t go from 0 to 100, they didn’t make a whole campaign, full ass albums, concerts, interviews, speeches, about loving, accepting and speaking yourself, they didn’t create, produce, record, and write songs, to be called “low-quality” by some random ass youtuber. Not only did he have the audacity to say that their music is low-quality, but he also never backed up his points, didn’t give any “evidence”, never explained WHY he thinks this way, he didn’t do any of those things. I also wanted to address this point, i saw this in another comment and i needed to say it, people hate on things mostly women are into, like boy bands, because apparently making fun of things women are into is “funny”, he is a great example of that. Plus most people just like hating on popular things cause they think it’s “edgy” and “quirky”

So technically he doesn't need to address whatever they have to say.... Unfortunately .. -.-'

@@dominaiscna To me music is an all encompassing term of what an artist who is a musician or lyricist puts out. Songs are a part of the overall music and lyrics play a key part in songs and delivering the message of the music, especially in rap and hip hop. If he specifically said the INSTRUMENTAL or backing track or something, I would still disagree but then if he didn't listen to the lyrics, that would make more sense to me. But he didn't. He said music. As in the overall art in the form of music that BTS puts out. And that I highly disagree with. And I do think not all kpop is like this, art. But I think BTS is. For many reasons. It's common for people to show off what they are proud of. BTS or PSY or Kpop do make Korean proud. So what! They will naturally express it. All you need to do is to direct them to another topic. With the explosion of social media, somehow they forget the simple etiquette that if you don't know how to respect others, don't ever expect it in return. Without Hangeul, there is no BTS. Without BTS (and other Kpop groups/movies/etc), there is no expansion of the Korean culture. This guy needs to understand that. BTS is so inherently and unapologetically Korean that they topped charts using songs written in Hangeul, not English. Their performance at the MMAs was so beautiful to watch and this guy calling that low-quality truly hurts my heart.

Why shouldn't Koreans take pride in BTS? They are the ones who made the Korean culture and the country itself popular. K-pop till BTS wasn't enough for every other person in the world to know bout the Korean music. I got into kpop because of BTS ...(I'm basically just into BTS lmao) two years ago. N that was the time I was in India. India , getting over Bollywood and introducing BTS ,thus K-pop on the music channel ? Something that seems next to impossible for me if BTS didn't have good music... These seven humble boys taught me bout the korean culture . Not only did they teach me bout Korea, they cure my anxiety every single day. If it weren't for them, I'd prolly be in the same unstable condition. They've taught me so many things nobody can ever teach me. They are the reason, I wanna learn Korean and come to Korea. If this asshole was a Korean and would prolly not have his whole fuckin body surviving on a single braincell, he'd understand the mindset of Koreans who take pride in BTS. But since he satisfies neither of the above two conditions, that simply defines him as what he is: an ignorant nobody who has poor music taste and is desperate for clout.

Dude is not only insulting BTS, kpop fans and Korean citizens as a whole, he's insulting Korean leadership. They didn't give BTS the Order of Cultural Merit for nothing. BTS received that award _for spreading Korean culture, including hangul._ It's that dude's opinion that BTS is low-quality, which is entirely based in ignorance. BTS is like the Beyonce of Korea. Would he say Beyonce is low-quality just because she's popular? What does he consider to be high-quality music, then? Probably some hipster indie classical shit. He and his friend who hear "boy band" and automatically think "boy band = shitty" never bothered to listen to BTS, or any boy band. And yes, accessibility matters too. You can't just walk up to a foreigner and go "you know what's really great about Korea? Our alphabet." Okay? Why should I care? I can't just start prattling about how awesome the English language is. I have to give you a reason to want to learn about the English language. Pop music in general is that relevance, that accessibility and that bridge between cultures. Like so many other commenters have said, we're learning about Korea and hangul _because of_ BTS. We want to understand their music and their words the way native Koreans do. That guy's just being a total snob.

i watched a video essay about why so many people loathed twilight and i think the underline issue is the same here too. it is because it is dominantly a women's thing. (regardless of my opinion of the books in this matter) people hated those books with a passion. an unreasonable amount and it was cool to insult girls who liked it. same here. yes there is male fans too, just like with the books, but it is mostly women thus it is cool to insult bts. if a country has an amazing athlete and they brag about that it is completely fine as sports is mostly a male thing. but boybands are a female thing so it is completely okay to mock them. for example. i went to line up all night for an event in okay where my favorite group was performing at a club. we all waiting the whole night in negative 12c. right next to use as a shoe store that was coming out with a limited edition shoe. so there was a lot of men over there. they also were lining up in the same weather over night. and yet they were mocking us for lining up to see our group. because honestly collecting shoes is mostly a male thing. side note, mcds french fries are fucking bomb, come at me. but i am so tired of people thinking it is cool to mock women for what they like. (man wearing sports jerseys) "oh you are wearing boyband merchandise? hhaha" this doesnt make sense. what is the difference? i hate sports and i am not going to make fun of someone for liking a team. I have my groups merchandise and i wear it. show your fandoms. if you love sports show it. if you love bts show it. if you love mcds show it. dont be ashamed of what you like. dont let other fandoms bring you down either. if you love many groups like me show it too. i wear my groups merchandise and bts merchandise. i dont care. i like both. i can like pasta and pizza.

Word! I agree 100% If you think about it!! BTS’ first hit in the western charts? Boo, it was in Hangul. Y’all. They didn’t give us an all English song to make it digestible. And on some of the largest stages that they knew global fans would be watching? What did they present? Traditional korean dance, korean instruments, korean traditional dress. Just because they are not teaching it in a classroom like setting does not mean they aren’t teaching the world about their culture. If anything BTS is holding the door open for the world to see the beauty of Korea. They’re the a starter course to looking deeper. Especially because they’re songs and ideals are so deeply rooted in the social culture and ideals of Korea. Y’all. They know it too. Pop culture is a still culture and it is informed by government, society and history. It promotes those things whether through denouncing it, criticizing it or offering it on a silver platter. It’s a matter of opening up your own view and getting rid of your own prejudice. Okay. I’m done. Thanks for coming to my TED talk.

Why is he telling an entire country what they should and should not be proud of? We already know how awesome our language is, we’re taught that it was created to be extremely organized and easy to pick up on. We’re also proud of despite being attacked and invaded for literally thousands of years, we fought back and survived. We’re also proud of the fact that after being occupied by imperialist Japan for decades and dealing with all the terrible shit done to us while being one of the poorest countries after our war torn country was split in half, our perseverance and extreme work ethic to made us one of the top economies in the entire world. We know what we’re proud of and bts is one of them. Their large fan base promoted our country and showed how great it is. It makes fans want to learn the language to understand what the boys are saying, and encourage them to visit Korea. Yeah we still have a lot of flaws but every country that has ever existed has flaws. Just cause your boybands were horrible doesn’t mean ours are. Bts like all idols trained for years and actually had to have talent to debut. They focus on not only sounding good, but also have top-notch choreos . And even then, BTS is a bit more unique because of their different music style and focus on topics like depression, mental illness, and everyday problems the youth everywhere around the world experience. They don’t put out half-assed songs about love, sex, drugs, and alcohol all the time like a lot of American artists which is why people find them so refreshing here. Their love yourself albums spread positive messages, and these messages were so impactful that they were invited to speak at the United Nations. America also has the biggest music industry, and even though bts is a group that is from an entirely different country and doesn’t put out full English songs as title tracks or in their album, they’re able to beat huge names like Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande. THATS why we’re proud of them ya dumb hoe. The doors that way

A culture is not just made by a Language, it's made by it's people, how they think, how they live. If Bts or any other Kpop group encouraged even a little curiosity in the mind of a foreigner to delve deep into their culture, to learn Language, heck to boast about another culture in front of other people; Then YES you should take pride in them. The reason i started to love korea, the culture and kpop artist is all because of BTS. And what i love the most of BTS is the THE HIGH QUALITY of lyrics , melodies, CONCEPT(literally the CONCEPT). Motivating, inspiring and advocacy. Their works and performance reflects to passion i see in their eyes.

Right!! When that dude said "BTS is low quality" i was already thinking, "he gonna be making some dumbass point." and when he got to the part of Hangul being one of the most pride-worthy thing of Koreans, i had to pause to rant. 😂 Because even though that is true (the facts that he spits about Hangul) the reality is Hangul can't talk to me. When I see Korean scripts, it doesn't interest me. Because there is nothing relevant i can get from it. And being a manga+anime otaku, im more into Japanese scripts because i get something from it, and that is, reading freshly released, raw manga. No need to wait for translations. So Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji, and the language itself, is more desirable for me. BUT BTS came and i love them. So NOW Hangul became something relevant. Korean became something interesting. Because now, there is something from Korea that i greatly enjoy i wouldn't want to wait for translations to come! I was so ready to go to that person's video and give him my opinion, but i need to finish this one first and YES to what David said. Now i don't feel like going to that vid. I bet people are already in there saying about the same thing as me. That guy is now probably eating his own "low quality" argument.

He is coming from a place of privilege. To speak down on the accomplishments that they are achieving is belittling the hardwork that they have put in to it. Yes, koreans should totally be proud of what they are doing. They are having a mass positive influence on the world while still maintaining true to themselves and their culture. Their words, even in a different language, are resonating with people. It shows that language and culture doesn't have to have a boundry. POC are doing things that have never been done before. Why wouldn't you want to be proud of that? When Blackpanther was breaking box office numbers, black people were super proud and excited for that. These are roads and grounds that Koreans haven't walked before and BTS is paving that way for other fellow Koreans to come in. I really just cant comprehend why he felt it was necessary for him to make this video explaining his opinion that nobody asked for. Let BTS do this so we can see these other hardworking Idols be recognized across the globe.

Meaning, he has seen singers, dancers, and other musical acts, that are white, do this time and time again. Someone that looks similar to him. Somone that speaks the same language and sounds the same as him. Somone that could represent him. This is a PRIVILEGE that he has experienced all his life. He is coming from a place of PRIVILEGE to not acknowledged the reasons why Koreans are and should be proud of them. The representation for Koreans is a wonderful. It's not his place, as a white american, to come in and tell them what they should and shouldnt be proud of. If you think their music is shitty, fine. So be it. But you cant insert yourself in to this when you arent even Korean. That's like you showing somebody an art project that you worked extremely hard on, won your first art award ever for it and were super proud of it. RE: "QUALITY": BTS has exceptional lyrics. Ironically. ;m confident this guy hasn't learned Korean (via Hangul) enough to know and judge (captions!). Most mv have social critique, meaning, symbolism, word play, poetry ("Daeng" "Dionysus". "Mikrocosmos", "On"). The complicated choreography and demanding dance ("Dope","DNA", "Fire"), and, extraordinarily aesthetic, cinematography ("Fake love", Blood,sweat.." "Idol") are superb. Again, I strongly suspect he hasn't watched informed by professional standards to distinguish "low" from "high" quality .I don't know enough about singing to comment [*ahem*] This guy could be legit IF he learns the language or at least learns through proxy (captions!) and seriously watches the dance and cinematography objectively. I see the merit of his overall argument about misdirected pride and acknowledge what he says about Hangul as extremely flattering. I have faith that his intentions are to be engaged and supportive. Like him I agree a lot of KPop, just like any national pop, is mindless and formulaic as it is typically enslaved by commercial industry. But BTS has crossed the boundary between idol and artist.This should not be neglected.The KZbinr who explicates songs on this channel does a fantastic job.To enhance his own work this guy should checkout his videos. Their personalities seem to jibe well. (This is my opinion as a doctor of Cultural studies and Literature who has published writings and delivered professional presentations.) tl;dr - White, middle-aged man listens to a few title tracks and deems it neccessary to label internationally renowned band that is doing more to spread Hangul than any other person in Korea as "fast food." [Long rant to follow] The thing is, this guy says this without even listening to their music. I find most often that people who make such misinformed comments have only heard a handful of their title tracks AT MOST. Also, my own quick rant: any band with a predominantly female fanbase (ie "the boyband") is often automatically dismissed by people like him as being "not about the music" and "low quality." This is something he believes because of how corporations/media in the west have shaped his biased viewpoint as well as a little bit of sexism. Afterall, how could women like an artist for their music and not their looks? I know no one will probably read this, but I'll link a really good op-ed piece called "The Social Implications of Dismissing Boy Bands." medium.com/@heidisamiam/the-social-implications-of-dismissing-boy-bands-d7d3a098b87e A snippet: "The fact that there’s a stigma attached to the music or performance style of boy bands is snobbery, plain and simple, and music snobbery sometimes seems even more pointless than other forms of snobbery. I’ve had to unlearn my own music snobbery, and I’m a better person for it." I really should do a scholarly article about how BTS has the stigma of both the boyband and of being a male of East Asian descent in western media (and yet is STILL killing it). As a late millenial who has had to deal with people like him for much too long, it's hopeful to see the coming younger generation be more open minded to a wider variety of music and musician. And then I really can't add anything to the guy saying BTS/Kpop has music "like McDonalds" because David said everything I wanted to rant about.

Thank you for this comment. I think it speaks volumes when something like boybands are dismissed because their fanbase is 'crazy fangirls' and sports are viewed as a very serious form of entertainment, when sport fans are just as passionate and crazy but they so happen so be mostly male. It's dismissive and sexist. He deleted the video, so he doesn't even have the guts to stand behind his own opinions.

Perfect comment. This man fails to analyze BTS and their fans in the proper cultural context. He knows nothing about the impact BTS' music had over millions of people because he assumes that their fans are not capable of looking past a colorful music video, when in reality he is the one who can't see beyond the surface. What about the songs BTS wrote to honor their hometowns and dialects? What about how they incorporate traditional instruments and clothes? What about when bts sang about the issues young koreans face? What about how they entered the american market with music in KOREAN? Sure, BTS is by no means everything Korea has to offer. But for their international fans, they introduced a little bit of their culture and made us want more. Thanks to BTS, people are learning about korean traditions and culture, they're learning the language and some are even visiting the country. They have a huge platform and they use it to promote korean culture all the time. So, TLDR: This man just made a fool of himself.

Wow..."You're proud of a boy group? That's your pride?" Everyone and Danny and David have already ripped this apart for good reason but let me just throw in an additional SO WHAT? He's telling Korean nationals what they should be allowed to care about? Regulating what anyone is allowed to care about and enjoy? Who cares if someone's proud of a boy group, who cares if someone's proud of McDonald's. If I have a friend who comes in last place in every competition they enter because they're genuinely bad at the subject I can still be proud of them because that's my right and they're trying, doing something, and putting themselves out there. Dude needs to lighten up for real.

I feel like what he doesn’t seem to understand is that a non white, non American group who’s music isn’t even actually in English getting so worldwide famous IS something to be proud of. As much as things are getting better in this generation there is still A LOT of discrimination and racism and xenophobia within the entertainment industry, bts IS something to be proud of. I agree that there’s lots of other things to be proud of about Korea but why doesn’t he stay in his lane and not tell other people what to be proud of, if they feel proud about something within their culture and country then they can be, he can’t speak for all foreigners and he can’t speak for korean people either.

Wow okay. I get that this guy is trying to tell us that there is more than just "BTS" when it comes to talking about SK. I mean obviously but then again he also need to bear in mind that not a lot of people will get interested in a certain culture out of nowhere. There must be some kind of an attraction or pull factors that helps people to be more aware of the culture and to actually be interested in it. And for me BTS is a major factor for that. My advice for this guy is to not jump into conclusion. Do your research more. You're basically talking shit about a country's pride that is BTS. How would you feel if someone did this to your country? Clearly you have no respect for the country and culture yet you want to promote their culture?? The hypocrisy. Also I've been into K-pop and kdrama since 2009 but trust me when I said BTS got me extremely interested in SK's culture since 2017. Fast forward to now, I'm am currently learning Korean language at intermediate level. Now it's more than just because of BTS, it's because I'm genuinely fascinated by the culture.
