And although I am honestly more horrified than offended at how Korean media has depicted other cultures, I think that there’s really nothing we can do about it other than educate and give a chance to them to learn and grow. Despite that, I’m honestly tired of hearing “sorry” from idols and celebs. I’d rather hear an acknowledgement that “this is what I did wrong” and “I’ll fix it and do better next time” and they actually not repeat their problematic behaviors (wow!). I know my faves have made mistakes, but I’ve also seen them better themselves so I support them. Groups like oh my girl tho, have repeated CA even after a company apology, so I know they don’t care. In the end, I just want to see character development and respect for other cultures. I don’t think I’m asking much since we have the internet at our fingertips. What happened in the past was wrong and if they’re still relevant, they should apologize. But we should focus on making sure it doesn’t happen again. Mistakes are bound to happen, but this time there should be justified consequences.

The odd thing is (and I’m from Native American descent), is that from what I’ve read online from historians and such about Native Americans, going with them migrating from Russian to Canada/Alaska, many think most Native Americans come from Asian ancestry. I mean some Native Americans from say Canada/Alaska even have monolids. I do think these examples are really bad, but I do somewhat like T-ara’s MV, because if your going to cultural appropriate (and in 2011, which K-Pop was building up in the west at that time, so it definitely was out of touch then), at least put the effort in. I like the teepees in the MV and I do find the set well done, even if a bit racist. One MV I bet many wouldn’t think of is Bang Bang Bang by BIGBANG, where Seungri (which makes it easier to dislike what he’s wearing) wears a Native American headdress. Now I’m not in the Native American culture (my grandfather is mixed race so it’s a little different), but I know that headdress are like very important and aren’t just a decoration, so seeing Seungri riding around on a vehicle with a headdress on rubs me the wrong way and that was 2015. I definitely think cultural appropriation is still a issue, even in the USA.

Okay after watching this video let me express my opinion on this, the first thing is that you must already know the meaning of "shanti" now as many people have already mentioned in their comment. About the mantra, it's called "gayatri mantra", it's holy mantra which means "Om, the Lord, is earth, the space in between and the heavens. That Lord is the one who is the most worshipful. We meditate on that effulgent, all-knowledge Lord. May he set our intellects in the right direction." So basically this mantra mean to keep our mind and soul at right direction. Let me tell you it's considered that mantras are very powerful we can't use them carelessly. One need to understand and know the meaning behind it and why is it used in the first place before using it for entertainment purposes. They are like holy scriptures and can't be used just anywhere. About indina culture, it's very vast if you get inside it, you will feel like time is passing by but still there are many things you are yet to know. It's not just about tribe and all Korean culture is praised but it's just one out there, Indian culture is made fun of because it has many and people are not interested in knowing about them so they just make their own fantasy and showcase them in their weird dance moves, acting and singing. India is much more than what foreigners think it is. It has various rich culture and ancient history you cannot deny to look before you take inspiration from it. Indians love their culture and their country a lot. So it's better to be mindful of how you are showing it because it can create a really sensitive issue and difference between two countries.

For US military spouses that come to Korea with their soldiers, they often attend formal events and are given the opportunity to wear hanbok. I have a hard time with it because I’m American, not Korean. It feels like cultural appropriation, but then all of those spouses will tell you that the Korean women making the hanbok are very excited about it and encourage the spouses to wear them. It’s such a fine line between appreciation and appropriation.

Jen V ♡ It is not appropriation if multitudes of people from that culture encourage you to wear their traditional clothing as fine attire at a formal event or even for a quick pic somewhere. @@hi-ve1cw From my perspective as a Native "american", for us it is appropriation, because it was outlawed until the late 1970s for our Nations to practice our own cultures openly. All was done in secret for the vast majority of our Nations. This law and its repercussions is why we don't encourage others to wear traditional clothes from our Nations or much else. We feel we deserve to try to regain and maintain what is ours without further interference. Whilst non-Native kids and adults were doing their tomahawk chops and mock war-cries wearing fake Native clothes and performing fake Native everything it was illegal and forbidden for Native Nations to participate in their own cultures, ceremonies, languages and spiritual ways. Children stripped of their traditional clothes, languages, beliefs, traditions and rites of passage, denied parental contact and family and forced into assimilation re-education camps, called boarding schools until childhood was over and let out at the cusp of adulthood with no ties to culture or family having lived through oftentimes physical, mental and s3xu@l abuse at the hands of those non-Natives in charge of their re-education. This assimilation was being forced on Native kids who watched from the sidelines as non-indigenous settlers wore fake indigenous clothings and performed fake Native rituals while being forbidden and punished for trying to take part in their very real cultures. It is illegal for you to practice your culture but the settlers can play at it and mock your ways while you are forbidden to practice the real thing openly. It was only the late 1990s when Natives gained the right to teach their languages formally to their children in school settings. So this is why most of us are fairly quick to ask a non-Native to please stop. Not that many listen though lol we get told all the time we are being "honoured".

In this case, no it wasn't. If you were invited to wear hanbok by the women who made them for the event, that was an invitation to fellowship and draw positves from that experience. So long as the US army didn't profit, disrespect them, or any other negative, take the opportunities to learn. It's not really a thin line sometimes, it is what it is. In this case, it was a positive. I understood your hesitation and you did what was right for you.

5:36 That crown is traditional crown that found in the culture in many countries in Southeast Asia. (Such as Thailand, Cambodia, Malaysia, Laos, Indonesia, Myanmars etc.) They’re mostly use in a classical court dance. I don’t know about in other countries, but in Thailand.. many people still worship this crown. For example.. before they use the crown, they have a ritual ceremony (?? Recently I looked up "cultural appropriation" and found an important distinction. If the cultural feature used is something that the original culture would experience bias/negative treatment for, but the culture using it doesn't experience such penalties, such as K-pop idols wearing dreadlocks while African-Americans could get beaten up, arrested, or even killed for doing so ("driving while Black"), then it's cultural appropriation. Appreciation is being influenced by another culture artistically, such as using Southwest Asian (Indian or Middle Eastern) musical scales or rhythms without any other references in costumes, lyrics, etc. Another issue, though, around cultural appropriation, is who gets the money. There's a long history in the US of Black musicians starting a trend or writing a song, which then became popular in a white artist's version, so the white artist gets rich (as in rock n roll). The songs you played were perfect examples of cultural appropriation, but K-pop and K-hiphop are so heavily influenced by African-American music, that it's sometimes hard to draw the appropriation/appreciation line.
@tiffanykim27732 жыл бұрын
If it's disrespectful then yes cultural appropriation but it's hard for me where I'm from because we're a nation of many cultures and races lol 6 namely 6 let me not be dramatic but we practice cultural appreciation as we're encouraged to participate in each other's cultures and festivals and such plus first and foremost if it's not a national holiday for a particular race then we usually just identify as citizens of our country.

You’re missing the point about black folks being offended by braids and dreads. In the US, The Crown Act is being passed in several states. What is the Crown Act? It’s to make illegal to fire or discriminate against black people, particularly black women when they wear natural hairstyles, i.e., afros, braids, dreads, etc. It’s 2022 and black people have to fight for the right to wear the hairstyle of their choosing without repercussions in the workplace. Black people have always been discriminated based upon their hair. So, watching a k-pop idol wear a hairstyle that’s important and meaningful to black people…all over the world…it’s extremely disrespectful. They’re wearing the hairstyles without knowing the context, history and experiencing none of the negativity and discrimination. Same goes for music created by black folks. Black artists create music but rarely get credit or the monetary reward, especially in the 18th and 19th century. Also, look up the real story behind Jack Daniels.

There’s nothing wrong with using musical styles. But when you don’t do proper research for it, it’s still appropriation. Oh my girl’s bridge is influenced by middle eastern styles, not Indian or South Asian. Not only was there improper research, but then the song was associated with curry. Similar to hip hop- taking influence is great, but when you don’t know or understand the history of it (esp bc of its outreach) it can be problematic depending on how you go with it. As musicians, it’s the least they can do by having their facts straight. Tiger JK has used classical Indian influences it’s probably the best example of appreciating desi culture in Korea. Now any clothing or jewelry they wore in the mv has a reason to be worn bc the aesthetics are used in the correct context.

Shanti means "peace" in many Indian languages. I think "cultural appropriation" is a very Western/American concept and while I understand that there is a reason why it has become a matter of concern for many, especially because of the way the native American and African-American cultures were exploited by appropriating their culture/art and not giving them the due credit, I, being an Indian, in the present context, personally don't seem to mind the practice so far as they are not deliberately insulting to any culture! Without taking inspiration from one another, cultures will end up getting extinct just like the Latin language. Cultures are by nature fluid and need to exchange ideas in order to thrive! Instead of getting offended at the drop of the hat, all we need to do is learn to be open-minded, respect the differences between cultures, and thereby enrich ourselves and the cultures we represnt!

I think it’s very important to note that for many many years the Korean people were fighting just to exist, And maintain their own identity. After occupation I am sure that the country was literally in shock and trying very hard to regain its own personal sense of identity. Trust and disrespect from people that are literally treated like prisoners in their own country must have a great sense of distrust for any foreigner of any kind. Things are changing slowly, but I think we Westerners must take into consideration that the (now) seniors of Korea lived through a demeaning and very cruel occupation and have their own personal biases against foreign peoples for very good reason. The younger generation is changing this but we must remember that they were taught in a very traditional way by traditional people with these thoughts in mind. And of course we have to realize that those that lived during the occupation were schooled by a country that is very very racist, and still is. Wouldn't it be natural to assume that people who have a history of an occupier blatantly trying to erase their culture and language to be more sensitive to the pain of other people who have a history of being victims of genocide and experienced blatant attempts to erase their culture and language? It is puzzling to me that the journey from external and internal oppression to real democracy could be seen as an excuse in itself for mocking those that have suffered the same way.
@mhysalee92222 жыл бұрын
@@lenaznap you are right, but the problem is not that simple. very few people from my grandparent's generation had more than elementary schooling. The very few that did are extremely privileged, and the privileged class got their education by going to japan. My grandmother was never allowed to leave the house and had no education. Many of them will never understand the concept of cultural appropriation beyond having our land and language taken by physical force. Remember, we are seeing things from a perspective where most of us have seen different cultures and have at least some education. And the issues and effects of that time are not simple. My grandmother still uses japanese words. And 5 years after the japanese rule, the korean war broke out, and Korea did not have a chance to recover culturally before being razed to the ground again. By that point, japan was not the issue anymore. So Korea did not have the chance to rediscover our culture until much later. Maybe it is due to this that our parent's generation tend to be more nationalistic and protective of our culture than our grandparent's generation, but their experience is less focused on getting our culture taken away by japan and more of the threat within korea (the ongoing problem with north korea, and fight for democracy). So I find that they tend to be nationalistic but not in a culturally sensitive way. Unfortunately, it takes time for change. But it's completely fair to criticize the younger generation and up to our parent's generation. It's a problem we are aware of, and trying hard to fix. But I don't think our history helps much in that respect. the only people we are actually trying to "excuse" are those who are older, as it hasn't been long since we actually started thinking about our culture again and became proud of it.

On the one hand it is understandable that our grandparents' generation could develop a heightened "us vs them" mentality from their struggle to simply survive and maintain their culture, but on the other hand it has always bothered me that this doesn't easily translate to recognizing the similarity of their experiences in other cultures' history as well.

Although, this was after the group Roo'ra who's entire concept was reggae, their names stands for "Roots of Reggae" which was also the title of their first album.

I think the Come a Come song performance seemed more geared toward South East Asians like Thai traditional dresses rather than Indian costumes. All in all, these performances are so cringey and embarrassing. I feel a lot of times, they put on these costumes to entertain and make fun of us. There is also an interesting component to cultural appropriation in various fields such as fashion, food etc but one of the primary things is profit. At the end of the day, whose is profiting from the sale of a garment that has been culturally appropriated and relabeled; Is your restaurant marketing a cuisine and removing of language markers of that culture and selling it? These artists (and the companies behind them) decided that this was how they were going to market themselves out to the public and could think of no good concept than putting on a costume to exotify themselves.
