This song was meant to be a satire/parody anyway as expressed by the title and even if it wasn't it was blown way out of proportion. BTS antis tend to do that. Not to mention some big people joined in too cause they were "scared" of how popular the guys were getting. What makes it funnier is that in the end the girl chooses Taehyung (the only one who wasn't outwardly singing to her and trying to woo her) which just goes to show how they are preaching to keep the hormones which make you act up, in check.

I loved the conversations you two had about this song, you explained the context behind this perfectly! It really was mostly just a hate campaign by antis trying to find things to criticise bts for - but like you said, it shows so much about their characters that they started meeting with professors of women’s studies and are even more reflective of their lyrics now. (Like 21st century girl, or the fact that all their love songs nowadays are gender neutral, ….) It shows how much they’ve grown up 💜 (RM even mentioned this in an interview when they were at the UN a few months ago, which is so cool of him to address!) (I’d love a “reading hate comments” video by you guys, that’d be hilarious!)

If I’m not mistaken the album ‘Dark & Wild’, which features the song War of Hormone, was released in August 2014. But the actual articles generating criticism didn’t happen until 2015. Just shows how ridiculous the whole thing was with people trying to generate any ‘dirt’ on the members, and the media went with it and blew it out of proportion. However, it really is admirable how BTS responded and became more consciousness and inclusive in their lyrics because of it. It also takes a lot of guts to address the topic of gender equality (which is still an issue in Korea), while sitting next to your own president. That Nightline interview with Juju Chang was so amazing, I thought I was having a fever dream because when are American interviews with BTS actual well done and well researched? RM would give his lyrics to a professor of women’s studies to evaluate them. It breaks my heart bc there is absolutely nothing misogynistic about this song. Of course then we got 21st Century Girl out of it. Still doesn’t make me feel better about what they went through, but it’s a bop.

i love this song! actually American Hustle Life was filmed before this song came out and they wrote this song base off their experience on having to scout girls to be in their music video. They were so scared to talk and interact with them. It was really cute and funny. It made me respect them as artist even more because they sing and rap about life and things they went through. Also this song came out in 2014 but the so called controversy came about in 2016. Not b/c BTS did something wrong but b/c haters was trying to do whatever they could to bring BTS down. They even petition the Blue House to abolish MNET b/c BTS dared to win Artist of the Year in 2016. it really is crazy what they've been through. its a mixture of immaturity, stupidity, jealousy, and malice. BTS song UGH! calls out those haters a lot.

Love your response to this, not just the contrast between this and the blatant and sometimes aggressive sexism of American rap (which frankly ruined the genre for me - it is sometimes almost literally murder) but because you found the precise word for this, which I have been (for some reason) groping for, for years! This song is a SATIRE on the reaction of the adolescent male when faced with a pretty girl - and even as such, it is mild, but Lawdabuv, the sarcasm drips off it! And even then, no mention of tissues on the bathroom floor, even. And Eastern "conservative" cultures are actually a bit hypocritical about the subject, but enough of that. I felt bad that they had the reaction they did (as you point out, any excuse) but also, only a very strong writer can afford to re-examine their attitudes and try to learn and change. All credit to NamJoon - he took it very personally and was crushed, but he came back. I love him. And, your hate comments reaction video .... do it!

This was one their earlier songs that really got me hooked on BTS when I was just in the process of being an army. And even then I understood what they were trying to say given the title and I didn't find anything wrong with it. Bang PD really told them to be true to themselves and be authentic with their messages. And the boys did. It was part of their first full album Dark and Wild which followed their school trilogy albums. And if you'll analyze it, the school trilogy songs talk about being young and innocent but when it comes to their next album, it kinda tackles a different side of the youth, which is the rebelious, kinda wild side - hence Dark & Wild. Not just the cool concept in a young boy's perspective but the common struggles they face as young boys, raging hormones included.

Thank you for your reaction video with your producer friend in this time, too. Since yesterday, I have been enjoying your channel a lot. I have already left my thank-you comment on your Daechwita review which is my favorite song of BTS. I love this song, too. War of Hormone. I think it's very honest and frank responses about girls by boys. Moreover, these all seven boys are acting very cute and attractive in the film. As you mentioned, I have heard that they were criticized about some misogyny (or philogyny) and feminism issues. The lyrics depicted women too much by men-oriented eyes. I, personally, found out BTS early 2021 so I have had to learn BTS a lot by myself, too. Yes, I agree with you. Korea and US have quite different standards about how to reveal people's desires. American songs are quite sexually explicit, and they are acceptable, yet Koreans are not. I quite shocked by Miley Cyrus's concert even I watched it in KZbin, and I couldn't enjoy the show at all. Of course, people are very different, anyway, I was that kinda person. Therefore, I was a little embarrassed when Megan Thee Stallion was on the stage with BTS together to perform Butter in the recent concert in LA. She is a good singer, gentle and talented person, but her costumes made me....I am quite aged but still don't know how to enjoy the songs of Cardi B. I saw the American Hustle Life, too. BTS was too young in that shows, they were almost between the border lines of minors, on the contrary, the women they had recruited were too mature comparing BTS' social ages at that time. I was awkward to see that. Anyway, thank you. Still I don't know your names. Did you mention it in the film? (Did I skip that part?) Maybe, soon I would know it. I just wanna share my thought. Thank you very much, gentlemen. Merry Christmas. Esther From Korea.

Note: War of Hormone was released in 2014. There was no controversy when it was released. But when BTS started becoming more popular worldwide with the release of their first million-unit sale album- Wings in 2016, that's when it all started. Surprisingly, the one who started it was a woman in her 40s from the West and quickly picked up by Korean fans from other fandoms (who were/are always finding faults with BTS), who didn't seem disturbed by it in 2014-15.

When I first heard this song was controversial, I was surprised. Can we say; "WAP"? So many lyrics in both rap & pop songs in the U.S. are...Naughty. Grimmy, Sweaty, cross so many lines and this song, to me is not even noteworthy, if you're talking naughty. Not even a blip on the screen. I've heard so much worse over the years. I've actually thought they should rerecord this song in english and re release it to the U.S. market.

Fun Fact: Why the background of this video does not look like Korea? The video was filmed in "Gyeonggi English Village Yangpyeong Campus is an education theme park that provides opportunities to children to learn English through activities and recreation. The village seems like a miniature city in Virginia, USA. Feel as if you are in the U.S. thanks to the 55 American buildings including Dulles International Airport, the Immigration Office, the Jefferson County Library and the Washington Music Center. The village is famous as the filming location of the Korean TV series “Boys over Flowers” and “City Hunter”. The wall paintings at the Mural Village are gaining ever more popular among visitors." I recognized the set from a segment that the Kpop group Super Junior once did there where they were challenged to speak English.

I agree that this is benign compared to much out there. Totally. And I like the song. I get it's a teenage boy thing (which they largely still were then). And the reaction didn't really happen when this was released but a couple years later when they were killing it and jealousy was clearly the motive. But I respect the shit out of the fact that, when pointed out that this could be seen as objectifying women, RM decided that wasn't the impression he wanted to project and took steps to change it. Too many people don't care at all and BTS did. I totally respect and admire that.

Happy Christmas to you all! Really enjoy this song, as you say its so tame compared to Western music. I never listen to Western music anymore because I could never trust the lyrics to be morally okay so just gave up altogether. Then BTS came along and now they are the only ones I listen to or follow which is enough for me. Growing up in the 80's the music didn't seem so bad but now when I go back and listen to the lyrics some were questionable but as kids you don't understand some of the messages therein. Sooo glad these young men came along! Reading bad comments would be interesting indeed but do you have time for that? you might end up with people deliberately giving you nasty comments just to see you react! 😜😜🤪🤪😆😆 Borahae!

I too adore the outfits in this it’s so dang fun. Anything that requires so much sex to sell is so often low quality. I remember booth babes at tech conferences, at the time I worked at Apple and helped run out booths and we had very strong instructions that the tech is the focus and to wear the company uniform (Apple tee shirt or polo shirt and jeans or khakis). BTS doesn’t need to have writhing women to distract from bad music because they have talent and great songs.

From what I’ve seen. The kpop community absolutely does NOT care about misogyny, sexism, racism, xenophobia to any great extent. (by that I mean there is no large significant initiatives concerning these issues that are undertaken by fandoms as a whole, individuals of course are concerned about these things) They’re primary concern when their kpop groups display blatant traits of these is to make sure ARMY don’t find out. That’s it. If they have any protest towards their group it’s nowhere near the numbers when it comes to their criticism of any perceived slight from BangTan. I’ve seen with my own eyes some very ironic instances where the whole of kpop will be taking BTS over the coals and another group will have done something pretty wrong within the same week but it’s not even addressed. Why? BTS’ success? Yes, but also because BTS have TWO weaknesses. They don’t have plausible deniability. They are involved enough with the lyrics that they take responsibility for them. I’ve seen other stans LIKE the fact that their idols don’t have to take the heat for their lyrics bc they have no control or input about them. The next weakness is ARMY. ARMY to a large part IS genuinely concerned about these issues outside of BTS. I mean, it’s not a reach that a group writing about social issues attracts an audience concerned about social issues right? BTS did raise valid criticism bc of cultural appropriation and they addressed them. The kpop community saw that and it was like blood in the water to them. I say this as someone who was not biased against the kpop community when I first got into kpop. I was open and was trying to navigate the fandom community. It was like walking through a sewer. Vile. Real issues were just used as stan war points. Does it happen on both sides? Yes. The same extent? Absolutely NOT. There are layers bc of age, culture, and different communities of stans but all in all a huge majority of BTS ARMYs have a concern for social issues and BTS is used as a whipping boy by other Stan’s grouping together to attack (while others look the other way) it’s been like this since BTS’ inception except I was a kdrama fan seeing it on the kdrama forums way back then. I wasn’t even a fan but I saw it bleed into my section of the web.

This. This made me smile. I remember seeing it while watching kdramas as well. I thought it kinda funny at the time. People on Viki would be commenting about someone in the drama reminding them of Jungkook and everyone would jump on them telling ARMY to shut up. But when a similar comment came out about another group? 0 replies.

UM YES THANKYOU BTS X PUNK AESTHETIC IS TOTALLY BOMB, I’ve always loved it and then they recently released the 2021 Seasons greetings with modern versions of their punk look and omg 😭 I loved it even more. Especially with Jungkook and Jimin now actually having tattoos and JK having piercings. As someone who used to be full on goth and hung out with the punk crowd a lot I have a huge soft spot for it 🥲 Thankyou, you explained the situation surrounding this song very well, poor RM had a real hard time after the outcry against this song, he felt really bad. What I love about them is that going to the woman’s studies professor was not about bettering their image in others eyes, it was purely about bettering themselves as human beings and understanding how they hurt someone so as not to do it again. I personally love the song!!!

I absolutely love this song, it's so catchy!! I totally agree that compared to Western music, this is basically nothing, and they were young when they made this. "War of Hormone" really says it all. Nevertheless, having in mind some of their other songs and also solo songs as well, I am glad that after this they kept an extra eye on promoting gender equality. I'm not saying they deserved the reaction they got, absolutely not (!!), but I am glad about what happened after: the women-empowering songs, Joon checking his lyrics with a women's studies professor, etc. For me, it highlights that you can come back from making questionable decisions by showing you learned with actions in the future.

I would really like you doing a reaction video about "bad" comments you get. I don't imagine what kind of things they write and don't understand these kind of people. It's like the interpretations/understanding of what people intend to say ALWAYS goes the BAD way!! I really, really don't want to be in their brains, they must be soooo unwell!!!

This song is interesting if girls think about the lyric! The boys are in a war of hormones! Their feelings should not be named as LOVE! If the girls would think about that, they didn't misunderstand desire or lust as love!

American Hustle was before WoH, but yeah the accusations were ridiculous. In Korean hangul the whole equation thing is more in the vein of puzzles/mysteries and that ppl are drawn to solving them. As some translators translated it as 'doing them' it turned into a whole crapshow, esp. among antis AND some international fans. Also some international SJWs started crap because of the word 'Nega' 네가 (meaning 'you' in Korean) which sounds similar to the n word. Claiming that BTS is not only sexist, mysoginistic but also racist. RM said in an interview that a professor of women's studies at Seoul university has a look over his lyrics since then to make sure the lyrics are ok. Though their songs have been pretty much genderless since then, except for a handful like I need u even though the 'girl' in that song was only used because it sounded better than friend, buddy or mate and boy was toooooo forward (the MV and some of the lyrics are part of the BU and it is about friendship and loss of that youthful, innocent friendship etc.). So yeah ppl are stupid.

I try to avoid watching the video. It makes me blush so. =0p I think reading bad comments and laughing about them would be therapeutic. =0] hugs. Love u. #YouAreEnough🎄Happy Holidays!🎄 -NY USA Army💟

Jmo, the negative comments are based in misandry. A failure to recognize the wonders of the teenage voyage of discovery is a failure in a person's growth pattern in total. Stay well

On a funny note, ARMY always says that this is the "straightest" BTS video/song and yet Jimin still gets slapped on the arse. Anyways, as I've said before, this song is basically a satyre. A parody. They're basically making fun of boys and how they act during their teenage years. It's meant to be cringey and exaggerated. How anyone took the lyrics seriously when they talk about popping their pimples is absolutely beyond me. Literally, HOW? And even if it were somehow serious, the lyrics are basically an ode to women. Saying they're perfect and how men worship them. It's cheesy and cringey, but it's absolutely not misogynistic. Geez.

Look, the lyrics of the song aren't the best let's be honest. But we all know that THEY know it was a mistake and they corrected it and they evolved and are doing better know. But also the song sounds so good and I bet 90% of the Armys are vibing to it. Cause IT'S A GOOD SONG. Before I read the lyrics and analyze them and stuff I LOVED the song and guess what... I still love it. It's in my top favorite songs.

Absolutely do a bad comment video. As an ARMY, I want reactors to point out the absurd and toxic comments for their inappropriateness. However, it is important this is done not as a reaction to be insulted but as an expose of how ARMY which purports higher standards than other fandoms is allowing, and often bandwagon supporting, internet warriors giving them free reign to publicly represent the fandom without any upbraiding. So even if done jokingly, perhaps ARMY will see how in some ways it has been trending away from its values.

I have a feeling parody, unless you literally go "wink wink nudge nudge" would have gone over people's heads back then. As you said, the title says it all. It's very similar to "Boy in Luv" and the message there. The Korean title was "Sang Namja" which roughly meant "Manly Man" or the type of man that would immaturely say "(You better) hold me lest I kiss you (myself)." Strangely, that title didn't give it away either. Love the reaction and definitely appreciate all the background research you've done to understand the songs in context! Hope you guys have a happy holidays! 💜

Telling boys to think, feel and behave like men is not right. Women, esp adult women should let boys be boys, just like we also wanted to be allowed to be just girls when we were still a girl, right? Let teenagers be teenagers.
