The whale has become a symbol of BTS' relationship with Army, in that we heard their hertz when no one else could, so they are no longer lonely whales. The image of a purple whale has been used many times in their mvs and stage designs (and the whale merch sells out in minutes lol). The mv for We Are Bulletproof: The Eternal is especially poignant, as well as the TinyTan animated video Dream On featuring the song Zero O'clock. I remember being a sobbing mess watching the WAB:E mv 😅

I love this song. What other band is using an anomalous marine mammal as a metaphor for alienation and loneliness? This song is why you'll see a purple whale in some of BTS's content and various art by ARMY. I made a mug with the quote "Even if I sleep curled like a shrimp now, I must dream like a whale" on it in art therapy myself.

Glad you checked out this song. As songwriters, starting with RM and Suga, they often draw ideas from real life stories in the news or stories shared with them by ARMY. RM explicitly said many of their songs come from what fans write to them about. He was a poet before he wrote bars. Suga shared how he was moved by fans’ handwritten letters. He laughs about how he once won a student writing competition. Their metaphors are original and inspired because they are REFLECTIVE READERS (fiction, poetry, psychology, philosophy). This allows them to connect the dots, conveying personal yet universal experiences thru startling imagery. Check out 134340 (Pluto). Mikrokosmos (Love Yourself album) refers to individual souls as stars in a galaxy. If you know Shakespeare, you know… Music of the Spheres, before it became the theme of ColdPlay’s album. In Blue & Grey, JHope’s verse talks about a grey rhino coming at him, an image carrying the heaviness of (pandemic) depression. He did his homework. They always research their concepts. That is why people who think they are just a pretty dancing boy band have not the least idea what they are about. 😂

Rm and Suga know the most random knowledge, it just shows when Suga starts talking about light fixers out of knowhere & architecture facts, giving random history lessons. Rm putting all that acadamic knowledge to good use, singing PQRST in a melody that represents the ecg wave of a heartbeat in a love song, talking about nature & all and don't get me started with the literature references all rappers LOVE, especially jhope ( his dad is a literatures teacher lol).

Nobody heard bts, the lonely whale, till Armys heard them. The purple whale is the Army mascot. There are many bside songs about how Armys and bts relate. Another one is 2!3! We are bullet proof eternal is a great one too.

The ending note is the whales song. This is one of the many reasons why i love BTS sooooo much. Its their thought process. Their music goes beyond the melody..they made me read the lyrics which i havent done for decades. For them to use these metaphors is art by itself. .

RM and SUGA are wide readers. They read a LOT. RM said once that when writing songs, he finds inspiration from the books he read. Also, they are highly intelligent and real artists - it shows in their songwriting and music production.

What sets BTS apart is how well read they are, and how interested and curious they remain about the world around them. RM and Suga in particular are very well read, and you often see them reading any chance they get. That makes them being able to take something like whales and turn them into songs. They even have a song about the former planet pluto 😉

One of my favorite BTS song ever. RM's part always hits me especially the line "Because even if i'll cry, no one will know" 😞 They have song titled 134340 (Pluto) from LY:Tear album, like this it was inspired to Pluto (that is not considered a planet anymore).

Whalien is also like a combination of the word Whale and Alien. Namjoon has said numerous times over the years like they feel like and are treating like Aliens in the western music arenas ( press, radio, awards shows etc..._ not fans) ---out of place, misunderstood, alienated , like no one knows what to do with them or how to treat them....even aliens in the KPOP work- treated like outsiders and excluded. They kept singing though and ARMY around the world heard them and recognized their special "frequency" , Genius song. Namjoon is a brilliant lyricist and so creative and poetic.

What a beautiful song. I looked up who wrote it and the 3 rap line members, along with the then CEO of Big Hit and 2 others wrote it. So, with all the hi-IQ and creativity, I'm sure someone had read about this Whale and they related it to their situation at the time. Thanks for sharing. You're right: they do use unusal ideas in their songs so well. But you need to remember there's seven of them and they have a huge team, too. So it's at least seven times the usual "idea-generating" power. Most bands or groups manage to have maybe one really "insightful" song in their career. BTS has done it multiple times, I think, largely due to the fact that they're such a good team. Teamwork makes the dream work, was it? 💜 EDIT: Also, they said multiple times that the ideas they have and the lyrics they write bounce between them and, for instance, Hitman Bang, so the idea has a chance to develop in this "bouncing" process.

Listen the way namjoon's brain works in lyric writing is insane. This man was literally sitting on a bench in the park and got inspiration from seeing a leaf falling from a tree and created spring day just like that.. WHICH is still at the top of the charts since 2017. It's extremely interesting to see how artists become so creative with simple things like that and turn it into something beautiful. The 52 hertz story was already beautiful and sad in itself and it's amazing that bts created a song out of the perspective of the lonely whale. It's definitely in my top 5 tracks from bts. HAHA the note at the end!! I feel you on that.

I’m guessing RM read about the whale somewhere at some point. 😀 Wait until your hear the groups relationship to the declassified planet Pluto in the song 134340 😂 As far as the 52 hertz whale, Leonardo DiCaprio help fund the movie “The Loneliest Whale: The Search for 52” which he also served as executive producer. The movie came out in June. The documentary and quest to find the whale were inspired by the BTS song. 💜

Bang PD of Big Hit Entertainment was unlike other music producers in that he asked one thing of the BTS members from the very beginning. He wanted them to write genuinely about their personal struggles. Much of their music reflects feelings & thoughts they’ve struggled with like rejection/criticism from rappers, fame, & loneliness & insecurities despite wealth & success. It’s relatable, beautiful, and reminds us that no matter how people look on the outside, we are all fragile, imperfect human beings.

Whale became so synonymous with BTS😊😍 I live discovering these jams in their discography. Even if I heard the song it's not always that I know these deeper meanings. This song, spring day, paradise and we are bulletproof: the eternal make me full on sob every time I listen to them (spring day I really can only listen to sporadically because it breaks me so much). The way BTS uses metaphors for our innermost emotions is truly a wondrous experience. I trust them with my heart because they always find ways to make me open up about my trauma and sorrow and yet they heal me. They’re the best artists in the world and they’re amazing human beings.

I agree - their lyricism genius is incredible. It's so different, the metaphors they used to express their emotions and thoughts is so unique - it is one of the many reasons I just love everything about them- and they were very young when they came.up with these lyrics, that blows away, there are adults who don't have this type of thought process. From.the beginning, they were already deep thinkers --- its genius---- their lyrics make one reflect--- genius can sometimes be hard to comprehend, one has to be open minded-- i wonder if that contributed to the critics' harshness towards them, no excuse for the hardships dealt towards them of course. It so different they cannot wrap their heads around it.

Anytime it's a big philosophical concept or random fact, I've just defaulted to the idea coming from Joonie or Yoongi. This is in NO WAY meant to say the others don't come up with complex ideas but anytime I've looked into a particular song, it usually ends up being Joonie's thought bubble behind it. It is the "Blue Whale" that is dubbed "the loneliest whale" so yes it is a species of whale 🐋 😉 BTS related to this because of their beginning and how they had to produce their own way to connect with the world because they were shunned for being from a small company. Hence they felt like the loneliest whale. I love this song and the way BTS is able to create, produce and perform such important songs 🎵 💜
