When I was in Thailand and my friend, a local and a former Muay Thai boxer, brought me to a gym to for some lessons and I asked him to strike me. He told me I needed a pad and I insisted not to but he ended up getting a pad for me to hold and just one kick knocked me off my feet. So I got up, asked him to do it without the pad and he said "your ribs will break" and he gave me some strikes at 30-50% and I was bruised for a week. We got some food with some other fighters that evening and I'll never forget when I asked what would happen if Buakaw striked me and my friend translated and they all laughed and my friend replied "you'd die!" and I asked what if he striked them? and they all laughed and my friend said "you die....we die....we all die" lol

Please add legendary (a bit old, too) Saenchai who is so softer and almost gentle. surely friendly, but very efective - like the strike he uses so often to get the oponnent down to the ground..., etc. In nearly opostte ways, both raised muai thai level, international recognition. Buakaw os more fearless, fear maker, destroing right low kicks and an amazing left cross punch. Saenchi is more like a performer, he does put quite a show, and in the end, all is friendly

I hadn’t known about Buakaw until a few years ago when I started really getting into combat sports. When I say this man is one of the all time greatest athletes in any sport, I truly mean it. He may not be as popular as Ronaldo or LeBron, but this guy puts in twice as much work both physically and mentally. Muay Thai training regiments are brutal and the vast majority of people wouldn’t last a day working out at these guys’ level. These fighters might as well be from another planet with the way they are disciplined and the amount of work they put into their craft.

That was one of the most enthralling things I've ever experienced. Wow. What a story. What fucking sadness I experienced when he lost those two MAX titles. I'm a 2nd degree BB in Wado Kai Karate, and have a massive respect for martial arts. And to see utter corruption, absolute fucking injustice and unfairness shown to him. It made me tear up. Yet he STILL BEAT THE FUCK OUT OF EVERYONE ON THE PLANET FOR 10 YEARS STRAIGHT. I am just... inspired. You said it, he transcended what it is to be an athlete.

I was lucky enoug to watch Buakaw train. And yes the other guys train hard too but he REALLY goes 120% of capacity. Never seen anyone constantly exhaust himself in every element of his training. Buakaw's secret is his patience. He keeps the perfect distance. He waits for his opponent to strike first, then he counters. His counters are deadly. That's how he lands most of his devastating blows. When his opponent's attack, that's when they are the most vulnerable and open, and that is when he lands his kicks and punches. He also almost never kicks straight when he aims for the head, he swings it upwards then down to bypass the arm that blocks the face. He also distracts the opponent with yaps while he twists his body sideways and delivers the unexpected kicks. He also trains to deliver extremely strong left sided kicks to weaken the opponent's dominant side. And yeah I agree with the comments the Japanese judges definitely pissed him off because in 2006 he played more aggressively to prove a point.
