The animation actually had effort into it, these days its either all ugly CGI traced or endless panning backgrounds with Emo characters. I actually FELT something watching this

There's just no replacement for the craft of the human hand. I think the people responsible for all the CGI crap know this, but they just don't care, because Japan's economy is a shambles and they're desperate to sell the cheapest crap they can. It's the same reason anime's been overtaken by cynical sexual pandering now. The sexy girls in BGC felt like they were what the creators made because they were what they wanted to see, not because they knew the sex would sell.

That's quite true. Just like with 80s movies from America, we only remember the good stuff. Having said that, I still respect the absolutely prodigious output of the anime industry at this time, as well as that fact that it was all hand-drawn.
