Very helpful since we're remodeling our 1975 house that has seriously textured walls with an unknown amount of paint layers. We're testing skim coating on the walls in the entry before moving on to the rest of the house. Encountered these bubbles for the first time. Working them out with your suggestions, but 1/4" drywall may be the solution for the rest of the house and easier on the shoulder for sure! Appreciate the lesson, thanks.

The other shoulder has tares too, but can live with it. Thanks for the info about the bubbles, makes sense about the paint being the issue. Thought I may be doing something wrong. I did slow my trowel swipes, (way), & that helped, but as I knew I'm going to give it another final coat.

I just began working on the walls of a spare bedroom that would be one of your worst nightmares. It has every type of issue - blistered tape, exposed tape, rough skim coat with ridges and holes that have to be smoothed, a butt joint that isn't close to being flat and an inside corner that's rounded because the tape wasn't pushed in tightly! I'm using everything I've learned from your videos to handle this mess. Thanks very much for your expertise.

I'm mudding over slightly wavy plaster walls. For the first coats, I don't worry too much because you can't really trowel the deep spots tightly. For those first coats I'll sometimes wait for the mud to stiffen slightly (like a few minutes) then lightly run the knife or a sponge down the bubbly part just so the bubbles aren't raised. The goal is to flatten the bubbles so the high spots they create are less high, and some get popped. It's fine if it leaves an un-smooth surface. You can make it smooth in later coats, when the wall is more even and you're really able to put even pressure on all parts of the wall with the knife.

Bubbles can also be en-trained in your mud from mixing it at high speeds. When mixing mud with water to thin it down to working consistency, keep your paddle speed low enough that your do not get a vortex around the mixer shaft. It takes a little more time but you make it back up by having fewer bubbles in your finish. One taper I knew actually had a vibrating stand that he had built with an electric motor. He would mix his mud in a 5 gallon pain and then let it sit on the stand and vibrate. you could actually see the bubbles rise up out of the mud. When the bubbles stopped coming up (about 5 minutes), it was ready to apply.

That was good. I'm in the UK. I've been getting the bubble problem using Gyproc Easyfill 60 or Diall Really Mixed Filler when skimming larger areas. I always paint the walls with Dulux Matt White Emulsion first, on the principle that it gives me a good base coat to work from, and makes it easier to spot high and low spots.

I've been drywalling for about 8yrs now and what I've found is 3 good ways you get rid of the fish eyes on painted surfaces, same as you did with the skin coat and also reverse of that to take a 4 or 6 inch trowel scrape the bubbles open and finish it with a really tight Skin coat with topping. Also found putting dish soap in the mud before you spin it up.

my second tip is how to best find imperfections before painting. i have an 800 lumens bontrager bicycle light that has effectively doubled as a very compact work flashlight. turn off the lights in the room and go over the drywall with one of these and any imperfections will jump off the wall because of the way the intense light throws detailed shadows. much easier on the eyes than trying to see them in normal light

I think it happens over dust on the wall. You should do a test on fresh drywall, one half with drywall dust and one without and you will see the difference. What I find is the best way to remove is to wave your knife over them for a few seconds, most will pop. Then run your knife over them again and they will be gone.

You won't get bubbles if you first use a setting plaster over the painted surface (I use a 45min product, but longer set time like 90min or 120min would be OK in slow drying conditions) and then as soon as it sets, but before it dries, apply the next coat of ready-mixed compound (easily sandable) before the first layer is dry. It's when you apply the second layer over dry plaster that results in the bubble problem. Alternatively, if the first layer of setting plaster is dry, you could use a garden sprayer and dampen it before applying the next coat to avoid bubbles. Don't spray water over a ready-mixed compound though, as it will soften.

I did the same thing I had to skim 3 painted walls and bubbles everywhere even after 3 skim coats... I then said f it and scraped the bubbles lightly to knock them down and skimmed a really tight skim over just the bubble area and problem was solved. annoying waste of time skimming walls more than twice. needless to say I learned from this experience.

If you search youtube for videos, for example; "how much pressure do I apply to my drywall knives." Nothing comes up. No body is sharing this info. I painted military equipment for 12 years. Occasionally we would get into some equipment with a lot of Grease on it or alot of new metal box's with alot of oil in the metal even blasting it did not help. It would fish eye everywhere! The one thing I found that worked was orange degreaser. We would spray it on and just paint right over it it worked like a charm every time. Doing acid wash primers and spraying down the equipment with various solvents was not allowed in our permit. So many tricks were tried. That helped in that situation. I now remodel houses and I have heard of using joy by a few older contractors haven't tried it myself. But think I might give it a try next time just to see I can always fix if it doesn't work.

I had a little luck with pre-sanding the painted walls when skimming the walls in my daughter’s room. I used the logic that (even lightly) sanding off the paint will create some access to the porous undercoat. I don’t recall having any issues with bubbles, unlike my office walls (which were painted with the same paint) that had bubbles EVERYWHERE. I also wasn’t too concerned with bubbles in the first coat as the original wall texture was a deep, horrendous skip trowel that took three coats to smooth over, anyway!

As a painter, I get to deal with bubbles far too much. Your video is SPOT ON! Whenever a patch or new wall joins an existing painted wall, the mud usually bubbles on the previously painted surface. My suggested solution is VERY similar to yours, what is it? Start with a TIGHT SKIM USING HOT MUD (20, 45) let it dry partially (similar to your suggestion) and recoat. Or, better yet, MIX some HOT MUD (durabond 20,45) into your mud mix for your first coat. I prefer suggestion 1 - it hasn't failed me yet. Hope that suggestions helps? All the best to you!

Prime the painted walls first with Zinsser Gardz primer or Roman rx-35 pro999 problem solving primer. As a professional painter I do this all the time when a remodeled house is gonna have a bunch of wall work done, hardly ever any bubbles. We started using this primer a while ago after wallpaper removal and over torn paper from paneling removal and such. Whenever I do a job where a different drywaller skims over the paint directly I do notice significant amounts of these bubbles so I'm pretty sure using the primer does a good job at preventing the bubbles.

One way I've dealt with the pesky bubbles, was to let them be, then before painting with emultion, I've used a thicker primer that is meant to cover "imperfections in the wall" (manufacturer claim). It did fill in the bubbles well enough, and after the top coat, you couldn't tell that bubbles ever existed. I understand how this might not be practical for professionals, due to the thicker primer costing you more, but for a small DIY job, it worked well for me. The unexpected benefit of that primer, was that it masked well stains in the kitchen (due to the higher content of white pigment, I presume).

As usual, another wonderfully informative video. Thanks for taking all of the time that requires to produce something like this. This might sound a little off-the-wall but would you consider doing a video on how you go about cleaning up your tools at the end of the day? I know I sure would appreciate it. Thank you again.

I had the same issue. I was using a bucket of USG All Purpose (green lid). You can see the bubbles right in the mud when you remove the lid. I took it right out of the bucket and into the trough. I think now that I should have transferred it to a smaller bucket and mixed it thoroughly.

Hi Friendly tip! I would recommend applying a quick drying oil primer first then apply a skim coat of mud! The gooseneck guy! Cheers!

The bubbles happen because like you said on painted surfaces you have 2 things working against you. 1) naturally mud doesn’t bond very well to a painted or non degreased surface 2) and probably the most important the textured surfaces that the roller leaves naturally small holes won’t like to get filled unless you tight skin first because the mud will take the path of least resistance just like anything else in fluid dynamics or physics I guess. With that being said I always just skim the stuff tight im use to making a pan of 5 minute mud stretch and anyone that’s tried to mud a decent amount of prefills with it cause the store was out of 20-90 easy sand. You have to like really work the mud I use to do it in the pan but you can kill 2 birds with one stone by taking the mud that’s kind of setting and making it workable again by skin coating the wall. Hope this helps anyone the Dawn dish soap works as well you just have to trial and error figure it out before going into a customers house I suggest?🙏🏼

Do you need to prepare the painted drywall in any way (wipe down dust, splash it with water, etc)? And how do you know you have the right thickness - is it mainly experience? Keep up the great work.

Don’t overlook a chemical reaction between the old paint and the mud. You will notice that with the same amount of pressure and mud, you only got bubbles in the mud over the old paint. I know little about mudding dry wall, but I discovered bubbles in wall finishes when trying to paint over a wall in my kitchen that had just had the wall paper removed from the old paint beneath it. I tried everything I knew, but the bubbles kept coming and the new paint would not stick in the worst areas, where some of the paper coating on the drywall had been removed. I believe i had to put mud over the places where the paper was torn and damaged. What I ultimately learned is that a shellac-based pigmented primer-sealer will cover that stuff and almost anything else - no more bubbles and the paint stays where you put it. In the USA, shellac-based pigmented B-I-N primer-sealers are made by Zinsser and sometimes also sold under the name of its parent company, Rustoleum. Killz used to make such primer-sealers - not sure if they still do.

Bin, Killz, Target 1-2-3 are, in my opinion where cancer comes from, especially the aerosolized versions. Try using those on a job and the clients will start screaming from the smell, guaranteed! That being said, they do do the trick!

I’ve noticed that when I press my knife hard, it produces bubbles. If I use just enough pressure to smooth the mud...voila...no bubbles.

What about giving the painted surface a quick high grit sanding before giving it that first coating of mud to give the air a place to go?
