Good demonstration. I'm often surprised at how little spread with premium shotgun ammo out at 20 or 30 yards on steel. All the more reason for us to remember that inside the house at probably less than five yards, we're shooting a "rifle." Hopefully, we don't have people out there still who think they don't have to "aim" a shotgun! It will take out the whole wall from across the room! 😊

Been shootin shotguns for more than 65 years and I was never aware of the PROFOUND difference in patterning between economy and premium buckshot loads. For most cases in home defense situations I guess I would prefer the economy loads with a center of mass hold and a prayer the foe has no body armor. Subscribed. As an aside, my local range does not allow ANY shotguns! It was always a prissy outfit, but for the police range, it's the only game in town.

Didn't know that patterning was a dark secret. 😊 In my socioeconomic class 10 yds is a very long home defense range. In my 1600 sq ft suburban home I would be hard pressed to find a shooting lane more than 5 yds. In fact at 15 yards I would likely be shooting someone on a neighbor's property. Personally if I anticipate longer range shots I would not be considering shot at all. To pick at a nit a little bit, I disagree that the goal is to transfer a lot of energy. The goal is to damage an adequate amount of critical tissue and/or quickly lower blood pressure. Neither is really related to energy below a couple thousand fps. Buckshot is effective in this regard in large part because the shot spreads inside the target tearing up a large cone of tissue and destroying a lot of blood vessels. Slugs are a little different. They benefit just from the fact that you are firing a 73 caliber or so chunk of lead. Have a great Christmas and a prosperous new year.

I have been loading my own 12 gauge for over 20 years now, and what I have found to be the best for my rural home defense need is a custom loaded multi-purpose buckshot loaded with a super short wad with 4 pellets of .32 cal. Inside wad with 6 pellets of .33 cal over wad in a 2 3/4 hull no buffer, and loaded with a fast burning light powder charge for less recoil, about 1050fps from an 18 inch barrel. The 4 pellets loaded down in the wad stay with the wad about 10-12 yards consistently before spreading out on their own. Adding buffer of any type to this load changes everything, including consistency of pellet dispersal. The pellets do get deformed, especially soft cast pure lead, but do not affect the pattern and will not overly penatrate like copper, nickel, non-toxic, or chilled harder hunting types of pellets. I know most people are not going to make their own ammo, but I would caution against flight control in most home defense situations as it will consistently penatrate 20 plus inches of ballistic gelatin, especially if clustered together upon entry. Few instructors would recommend full metal jacket ammo for defensive use in handguns for good reason. The same logic also applies to other defensive tools. Flight control technology was created to extend patterns for steel shot and later buckshot for hunting purposes but has been overly hyped from typical modern marketing practices and unethical hunters attempting to take game at ranges that seem right on paper targets but have lost lethal velocity at those same distances. We are seeing the same B.S. in rifle hunting, unfortunately right now, as well with hunters shooting at and sometimes even hitting big game at ridiculous ranges.

Very informative video, thanks. So, what I took away from all this is; in the dark, no glasses on, moving target... if you want the best chance of not missing... use the cheap stuff. 9 pellets going a tad left or right in a 2 inch circle does nothing, but with an 8-10 inch spread, 4 pellets hitting still gets the message home.

Federal premium buckshot is designed for 40 yard deer hunting . I was a shotgun instructor for the DOD Armed Guard Service in the 80's. In combat "hits count, misses don't". A single 00 pellet may not end the fight but it will sure fuck up your adversaries aim. A 00 pellet is about 9mm. caliber. A 9 mm subgun doesn't shoot tight patterns but is still an effective fight stopper.

Had he, look at how many different organs would have taken direct hits, heart, lungs, liver, all more than likely would have taken hits. Retired LEO, good video, during my career I worked approx. 10 yrs as head of firearms. The federal flight control is a great round when used in cylinder bore barrels. It performed better at 50 yds than the remy 00 at 25 yds. According to Hornady personal I talked to the flight control wad was developed by an individual and Hornady bought the rights to use it. So anyone else who uses it has to pay them a fee. Funny think is the federal outperforms the hornady. My opinion is the plastic buffer & copper plated pellets help. Lastly, measure a federal flight control pellet & it's not 00 (.330) it's closer to O buck size.

The wad was originally patented by Chris Billings of Layton Utah in 1999. He marketed buckshot to LE agencies under the name CHOKE and Billings Ammo. I think I saw it first at a IALEFI conference. I purchased a 250 round case of the CHOKE branded buckshot. Still have 5 or 6 boxes that I keep for nostalgia sake. Federal Tactical, 13300 is the 8 pellet version and is my go-to buckshot. I've found the 13200 9 pellet version usually has a flier as much as 5-6 inches outside the main pattern.

Good video man. Always enjoy some shotgun love. That is actually what I carry as a truck gun, as opposed to an SBR or something (where I live, it makes the most versatile sense). I do love what Clint Smith says about shotguns: "a pistol puts holes in you. A rifle puts holes through you. A shotgun blows a big chunk of your sh✌🏻t all over the wall behind you. " Really great points about the spread, absolutely true. It's not about poopooing shells, they can do the job, but every brand and type are different and it's important to try them out and see for yourself what they do and figure out for yourself how to implement that information for your needs. Merry Christmas Mickey.

The point of shot vs slug is the spread. It gives you a little room for pointing/sighting error. At 10 yds, I'd want the spread of the cheaper ammo. For deer hunting at longer ranges, I'd want the tighter premium stuff. Home defense is going to be close range. Give me the spread. If I didn’t want that, I'd use a slug or a rifle.

Interesting note about buckshot: He mentions chokes but didn't highlight their effect. While a shotgun produces tighter _birdshot_ patterns at distance with an appropriate choke, this effect is reversed with buckshot. The tighter the choke the more stray pellets you'll encounter. You can see the wider patterns with BOTH types of ammo shown here. *For your defensive shotgun, find a load that works well in your tube and use the least restrictive choke.*

Thanks for a great video! Buckshot from #000 to #4 may be patterned with your shotgun from five to twenty five yards. A practical pattern is from two to eight inches however it is achieved. A practical pattern results in eight to twenty four separate wound tracks penetrating around twelve inches into center mass. This is what gives a single trigger pull threat stop, but you still have to aim. Pattern control and placement is the secret to shotgunning in general.

I discovered real quick that a full choke in my 870 did not pattern 00 buck shot good but it shot pretty good in a modified choke! I’m the young age of 70 now.😊 Going back to the initial test I made with the 20 gauge single shot! I shot a 7 inch app diameter pine tree at 2 or 3 yards with number 3 buck 9:00 shot it made a hole at least 4 to 5 inches inches diameter through the pine sapling and it fell over now that made a big impression on me to say the least! 👍

I also used news paper stapled to a cardboard box for my target. Since this was probably 45 years ago I used the available buckshot at the time. And I learned to hunt deer with a rifle and not a shotgun! Because the rifle was a much better choice and increased the yardage you could shoot a deer tremendously! Back then I learned by trial and error because I had no one to teach me how to deer hunt. But my grandfather had never hunted deer and my dad did not hunt at all! But my grandfather was a grandpa to me and my boys he lived to be 92 a month shy of his 93rd birthday! Really miss him!

The S&B is unbuffered. The white tiny pellets in the Federal are the buffer. You can get the rounds like S&B, or buffered rounds with the other type of plastic wads that are usually used in shotshells. Those plastic wads, the "normal" kind, open up from the front as the air hits the "wings" of the wad and the shot keeps going and leaves the wad. These usually give a 3-5" group at 10 yards (regular Remington ). The Federal Flight Control or sometimes called FightLite wads open up from the rear and slow the wad down. It keeps the pellets inside the wad and under control for much longer. Nice video. I thought reminding people of the ambidextrous tang safety was an excellent touch. I use a Remington 870 DM and Mossberg 930 with 18.5" barrel.

This is a good demonstration of potential. Some other factors to consider: The buffered copper-plated shot suffers less sticking and deformation during firing, aiding a tighter grouping. Unbuffered unplated lead shot will demonstrate slightly more opening due to compression deformation and increased friction. However, there will be differences in penetration and energy transfer between plated and nonplated shot. Again reinforcing the importance of understanding your weapon and ammunition choice capabilities. Get training and study ballistics. YMMV.

good info. a big consideration is the range at which you plan to be shooting. hunting shots are almost never done at 10 yards, but self-defense shots are done at 10 yards and closer. a hunting shot at 50 yards needs a tighter pattern because there is 5 times more distance for the shot to spread out. self-defense shots at 50 yards are likely to get you arrested (much more difficult to prove imminence of the threat when it is 50 yards away).
@samwilliams11423 сағат бұрын
There is an expensive alternative to lead shot that is also denser and harder. Tungsten shot is relatively new. Tungsten dramatically improves pattern and range, at great expense.

Good video as it reminded me to update my patterning. One point is that for those shotguns that have choke tubes, such as the 20” barrel on my 870, just change to a skeet or IC choke if you want a tighter pattern for the cheaper loads.
@YouveBeenMiddled25 минут бұрын
In fact, tighter chokes produce a larger pattern for buckshot. When those big pellets hit the choke (and each other) they start bouncing around as well as deform. You can see the same results in this video. Birdshot effectively "squirts" through in a smaller pattern, but buckshot is disrupted and begins to spread out.

Nice video! You got my subscription! Convinced me to go get some federal copper jacketed buck I have mine loaded 2 federal bb shot than 00 buck (rio) than a number4 buck than back to 00 buck you think that’s effective or should I go all buck? I’ve heard mixed reviews to load bird buck and I’m knew to home defense so any advice is appreciated!

@2:00 My first says Montgomery Wards on the reciever .... it is in reality a Mossberg 500 and yes indeed it still rocks reliably and is loaded in the closet with 12 buck and slugs with a strap FULL of reloads. Back when I qualified as a security officer I shot off my tac loads that were decades old and BLEW AWAY TARGETS RELIABLY!!!!
